Wacky Wednesday Comedy Showcase: A Candid Camera Classic - "Peter the Statue"

Candid Camera was an American hidden camera/practical joke reality television series created and produced by Allen Funt, which initially began on radio as The Candid Microphone on June 28, 1947. 

After a series of theatrical film shorts, also titled Candid Microphone, Funt's concept came to television on August 10, 1948, and continued into the 1970s. 

The show involved concealing cameras filming ordinary people being confronted with unusual situations, sometimes involving trick props, such as a desk with drawers that pop open when one is closed or a car with a hidden extra gas tank. When the joke was revealed, victims would be told the show's catchphrase, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera."

Peter Funt joined the show professionally in 1987 when he became a co-host with his father. During this time the show was being broadcast on the CBS television network. In 1993, Allen Funt had a serious stroke, from which he never fully recovered. This required Peter to host the show full-time. 

The show went through a few revivals. During his time on the show Peter was a producer, host and acted on the show. He also produced and hosted over 200 episodes.

But before Peter took over the show he had another role. At the age of 16, he posed as a Roman statue in an art gallery and managed to stay completely still while holding a spear. The reactions of people visiting and working in the gallery are hilarious.

Candid Camera was a popular and long-running American hidden camera reality television series. Versions of the show appeared on television from 1948 until 2014. Originally created and produced by Allen Funt, it often featured practical jokes, and initially began on radio as The Candid Microphone on June 28, 1947. 

The show involved concealed cameras filming ordinary people being confronted with unusual situations, sometimes involving trick props, such as a desk with drawers that pop open when one is closed or a car with a hidden extra gas tank. When the joke was revealed, victims were told the show's catchphrase, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera." The catchphrase became a song with music and lyrics by Sid Ramin.

Today we're sharing a classic episode in which people using an outdoor public telephone booth got an unbelievable surprise.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Woody Allen Dictates a Letter on Candid Camera

When the joke was revealed, victims would be told the show's catchphrase, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera."

Before he made over 40 films and became one of the legends of all cinema, Woody Allen was a writer for the classic Candid Camera show, and in that time appeared in a some of the clips.

This clip is from 1963, and features Allen hiring a new secretary and having to take down the most non-business letter ever. It's a real comedy classic.

Prankster Meir Kay: Looking for a Leader in the Park

We've latched onto the blog postings of Meir Kalmanson (aka Meir Kay) as our favorite prankster and we've been following his online antics as he gets strangers in public places to play along with the fun.

In today's shtick he hands a box to random people in the park saying that inside the box is a photograph of a leader from the past century and asking them to guess who it might be. Then they're asked what the qualities of a leader should be.

Their answers are interesting and their reactions upon discovering who the leader is are fun to watch.

Dancing Behind People in Jerusalem - A Comedy Skit by Meir Kay

Meir Kalmanson, the high-fiving prankster whose stunt in the streets of New York we posted a few weeks ago, doesn't limit his field to New York, and to America. 

Kalmanson, who goes by the name Meir Kay, took to the streets of Jerusalem to engage in lively dance steps while walking behind random strangers who had no idea what he was up to.

In many cases he manages to be unobtrusive and is not even noticed. But when caught, he has the remarkable ability to rapidly change his manner, stop the dancing instantly, and appear to be taking a selfie photo or tying his shoelaces. Of course, the music track was added later.

Yeshiva Bochur Makes Royal Guard Laugh in London

The Queen's Guard are known for their ability to stand motionless and expressionless at attention outside royal residences in London. 

Their discipline is challenged daily by tourists visiting the sites, and it appears one may have finally succeeded in breaching their strict protocol and getting the guard to crack a smile.

The culprit, identified only as Yankel, begins his offensive by taking up a position next to the soldier outside the Horse Guards Parade.

“We were together in school, me and him. He went his own way,” Yankel says as his friends record the encounter.

The soldier remains impassive as Yankel continues to elaborate on their friendship: “I remember in school, he used to sit by himself and read books. I was the guy fooling around,” Yankel says.

Although the title on the YouTube clips says this happened at Buckingham Palace, it actually occurred a mile away at the Horse Guards building in Whitehall. The Buckingham Palace guards, wearing bearskin hats, are more skilled at maintaining a stiff upper lip and remaining impervious to tourists determined to make them laugh.
