«Let's Play "What's That Thing?"»

I took this photograph last night, and touched it up a bit in Photoshop. I think it'd make a good desktop background. I've cropped it to 2560x1600, so it's in widescreen format.

Guess what this is...

It was dim in my room, so I used a longish exposure (2 seconds, I think). The green and red come from laser pointers that I shined next to it. The actual white light is from my computer monitor.

I always like macro photography, this photo spans about an inch of the real object.

«Suddenly, Manbabies!»

4 of them!

I have a few odd pictures on my iPhone, just because. This is one of them.

«What Has Science Ever Done For Us?»

I'd imagine according to Looney, this is all Science is good for. After-all, God created and gave us everything else we have... Like computers.

«Caturday: Catnarok»

The epic battle between Longcat and his arch-nemesis: Tacgnol. Probably will happen on the winter solstice of 2012.

«Top of Deer Mountain»

A while back (May 13th) I went part of the way up Deer Mountain until the snow became prohibitive. I took some pictures that day along the way and shared them here. Yesterday (September 6th, 2008) my dad and I went to the top. So here's a few pictures from 3,001 feet of elevation here in Ketchikan, Alaska. Click an image to view full.

This is a true bird's-eye view of my home town; Ketchikan, Alaska. You can see the top of Deer Mountain from about everywhere in town, so you can see about the entire town from the top.

This is the view off to the left of the previous picture. This is South of town and the Alaska Native town of Saxman. Off in the distance you can barely make out Metlakatla if you view the full-size image.

Looking across the mountain ridge to other mountains. You can see, there's still some snow up here. I really like how the alpine looks up here.

«Flight of the Pigeons»

On the 25th when I was out photographing a few ships, I happened across an empty lot where someone had thrown some bird seed out. I'm glad I had my camera. Needless to say, I had a little fun with the pigeons.

It's tough to photograph a mass of birds. They don't stay in focus very long and they are always moving and shifting. They really move more like an amorphous blob than individual creatures. I even named these photos, for whatever reason. You can use them as desktop backgrounds if you wish. Click an image to view full, they really are better when seen full size.

Flight of the Pigeons. I found out I could get a better picture of them when they were coming back to the seeds rather than flying away.

«Pictures From Tuesday»

I took a few pictures around town on Tuesday. The Volendam wasn't the only thing I photographed that day. I walked around on some of the more obscure boardwalks in Ketchikan. As always, click an image to view full.

Here's Edge Cliff Way. I didn't walk down it, but that dead end sign is for, you guessed it, the stairway.

I found this pattern in a landing on a brick stairway. Looks like a heart. It's at about the same location I was standing when I photographed the Volendam.
Heart of brick.
What ever happened to fire engine red, anyway?
Yellowish green Ketchikan fire truck.
Here's Main Street. Every town has a Main Street, right? What's that you say, not every town has a staircase for their Main Street? To be fair, there is part of Main Street further down that's for cars.

Speaking of staircases, check out the entrance to this house. I'd hate to haul a new refrigerator or furniture up to that house. Or just the groceries for that matter. Like I've said before, this town was built on the side of a mountain.
House on the side of the mountain. Many stairs.
Here's a salmonberry. They're like raspberries, but more tart or sour. I ate it after I took the picture. These bushes are everywhere around here, quite invasive.
Red salmonberry.
This picture was taken from an obscure boardwalk that overlooks the "Newtown" part of Ketchikan. It looked poorly maintained, and only went to the charred remains of a burned down house. I have no idea what the boardwalk is named.

«Reflections»

I may not have 1,000 posts yet (this one happens to be number 188), but I still have reflections of my own from time-to-time.

This one is a reflection off of Ward Lake, taken on May 16th, 2008.

«Macro Photography»

I've been playing around with the new camera. Here's a few images I took up close with manual focus. I've always liked macro photography. You can take a picture of a very mundane object and get an amazingly detailed picture from it. Click an image to view full. You're free to use these as desktop backgrounds if you wish.

You can probably expect more of this type of photos to be posted here in the future as I find interesting objects. If you're interested in getting the original sized images (2560x1920), just email me a request for them at: [To stop spambots, you must have javascript enabled to view the email address]. Blogger sizes down large images when you upload them to a post.

«Ketchikan Street Photos (Photo Heavy)»

On Monday I went for a walk and took a few pictures, mainly of different roads in town (just for you, Monique). Ketchikan, Alaska has a few unique roads... Click on any of the photos to see their full size; at least what blogger will allow. I have larger versions. All of the photos in this post were taken by me on April 21, 2008.

This first one is a crudely stitched together image of the 3rd Avenue bypass. I was having a hard time getting a good perspective of the landscape around the road with a single photo... Sorry for the poor stitch job, at least 3 of the 4 photos were from different angles. (This is the only stitched photo in the bunch.)

And this is the view from below the 3rd Avenue bypass...

... it's visible from the shoreline...

... and here is the view above it (from the Rainbird Trail).

I like how the Schoenbar Road hill just looks like a drop-off from the top, with the caution signs and such.

Believe it or not, this wooden boardwalk counts as Bayview Street...

...the other end of Bayview Street, and the rather short Barber Street; no more than a stairway. There's a lot of boardwalks in town that for some reason count as streets.
Bayview Street and Barber Street stairs.
A section of our main road through town. Yup, it's a viaduct, built over seawater.

Here's our tunnel. It has a road around it as well as through it. I didn't think to get a picture of the houses on top of the tunnel.

And here's 2nd Avenue / Water Street, built on piling, hanging off the side of a cliff. (FYI: the picture was taken from the top of Elliott Street; another boardwalk.)

A few random pictures to hide the fact I don't have anything else to blog about. I always have random pictures to fall back on... Click an image to view full.

This thing reminds me of a Behir from D&D for some reason. Someone must have had some extra time on their hands, and some warped creativity to create this thing.
