Academy Award-winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale star in FORD v FERRARI, based on the remarkable true story of the visionary American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and the fearless British-born driver Ken Miles (Bale), who together battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford Motor Company and take on the dominating race cars of Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966.

This late in the year, many movies are clamoring for awards. The names are bigger, the effects are more impressive, the drama is more dramatic and the run times are longer.  No corner is cut in the rally toward award season. It’s the best time of year to be a movie watcher, because there are a so many great films to watch.

Ford v Ferrari is one of those great films. But not like some of the over bloated, award seeking films of the season.  It was a lot of fun.  The whole experience, even the long run time, was entertaining. From the time the first engine roared on until the last car rode into the sunset, there was not a dull moment on the screen.

The cast was stellar.  Christan Bale (as Ken Miles) was at the top of his talent.  He is always great, but in FvF he is so much more likable because of the normalness of his character.  Bale wasn’t larger than life in this one.  He looked and sounded like a regular Joe.  Matt Damon (as Carroll Shelby) also had a very strong performance. Damon isn’t Bale, but still a very good showing by Damon.  It is almost unfair to pair another actor with Bale for as many  scenes as Bale and Damon had together.  Unavoidably, Bale’s star shown brighter, but Damon and Bale had good, watchable chemistry on-screen.  The rest of the cast also made a strong showing, with Jon Bernthal (as Lee Iacocca) and Josh Lucas (as Leo Beebe) providing the most notable performances.

FvF isn’t just a movie for car buffs or sports enthusiasts.  It is for anyone who enjoys original, based on actual events, movies. Except for some language, FvF is mild enough for the whole family. The flow of the action alternated well between the muscle car racing scenes and the human aspects of accomplishing something that had not been accomplished before.  That said, the race car scenes were adrenaline packed and very fun to watch.

Just don’t go to FvF expecting a biopic.  The movie isn’t about the life of Miles, Shelby, Ford or Ferrari.  It is the almost legend about how two people were able to set their mind on something, then went out and did it.  FvF is about the races.  There isn’t much about what makes any of the characters tick in it, but that wasn’t a detraction.  There was more than enough of everything else on the screen.

Speed to the theaters.  Ford v Ferrari is one of the best movies of the year.  It is fun. It is original. It is brilliantly acted.  And it is playing everywhere now.

The story of King Arthur, his sword in the stone, and Lady of Lake is timeless, a classic. It deserves to be told time and again so that each generation may enjoy it. The Kid Who Would Be King is not a remake or a reboot or anything that suggests it might be something less than a fresh take on a classic.

The Kid Who Would Be King is entirely charming from start to finish.  From the time the title credits roll with Medieval ominous animations, until the end credits, I was completely engrossed in the charm and creativity of story. We have all seen three or four movie versions of the sword in the stone legend, but this story felt fresh in the hands of writer/director Joe Cornish.  The schoolhouse setting and the school-age tribulations made the story relatable and earnest.  If it weren’t for all of the fantasy involved, The Kid Who Would be King could be the story of any middle-schooler.

And as a family adventure story, The Kid Who Would Be King presents timely, and necessary, aspirational themes without coming across as preachy.  The idea of making ones enemies into allies to defeat apocalyptic terrors was novel and fantastic.  “The knight’s code,” a list of attributes to which the characters of the film aspire to, is welcomed counter-programming to today’s divisive culture.  It is never out of style to be chivalrous, trust-worthy or to honor those you love, as the film suggests, without being heavy-handed.    I appreciated that the film worked-in its noble themes into the action and adventure.  It made the lofty themes more palatable for a young audience.

The young cast was very charismatic.  Angus Imrie (as a Young Merlin) stole every scene that he was in.  He had a way of casting spells which is sure to delight young audiences.  Louis Serkis (as Alex) also gave a very convincing performance. It was great to see a diverse group of children as the heroes of the story.  The young cast was such a hit on-screen that cameos played by the adults, Rebecca Ferguson (as Morgana) and Patrick Stewart (as Merlin), were almost unnecessary.

While The Kid Who Would Be King contains some scary images too intense for little, little kids, those images are gentle enough for anyone older than, maybe, seven years.  I watched the movie in an auditorium full of tweens, and they loved it. The only negative critique of the film is that it felt a little long at a two-hour runtime.  The ending felt purposefully long, but that one ding is not enough to keep me from recommending the film.

The Kid Who Would Be King has everything that a parent could want from a family film.  Definitely something to take-in to beat the January doldrums.  Bring the kids. Bring all the kids in the neighborhood, even.  No one will disappointed.  The Kid Who Would Be King is playing everywhere now.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

It’s not necessary to be a huge fan of Queen to enjoy this film. The film takes a broad approach in showing the audience the history of the band and how they met, the creation of a few of their most notable hits, as well as touching on some of their low points, focusing mainly on Freddie Mercury. I feel like the teaser opening scene of Mercury getting ready to take the stage for Live Aid and closing out the movie with the performance was a great way to frame the story. You are immediately greeted with energy and excitement from the get-go. The film takes you through an emotional journey of laughter, tears (I am honestly not sure if there was a dry eye in the theater at one point), and overall appreciation of what thinking outside of the box can accomplish. After all – “fortune favors the bold”!

Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Queen from the vantage point of the very talented, however quite lonely, lead singer Freddie Mercury. From Mercury’s days as a baggage handler at Heathrow airport, then to the coming together of Queen with Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, through the highs and lows of his personal struggles through superstardom, then ultimately resulting in his tragic AIDS diagnosis. Focusing mainly the lead singer, much of the complete story of Queen is left out. Granted it would be difficult to cover everything in one film, but the point of the band being a collaborative unit who prided themselves on creativity and not afraid to experiment was brought to attention and great effort was made in the story line to properly showcase that.

Rami Malek put everything into this role and embodied the spirit of the legendary Freddie Mercury. His performance was flamboyant, passionate, driven, and fun to watch. Not to mention he is a dead ringer for Mercury! I hate to admit that I did not know too much about the iconic lead singer until this movie. Malek’s performance was inspiring in a way which left me with a thirst to learn more about Freddie Mercury once the film ended. Malek did not sing a single note in the movie and the sound editing was done extremely well. You really have an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Mercury’s unique voice.

I realize I haven’t touched much on the other actors/characters of the movie, because honestly, I walked away from this movie smitten with the performance of Rami Malek and the legend of Freddie Mercury himself. I feel like the movie was well done and a fantastic film to shed light on who Freddie Mercury was for those like me who just barely missed the era of Queen in their prime. The acting was on point by everyone on screen and I felt invigorated leaving the theater. Bohemian Rhapsody is definitely worth the price of admission and a must see on the big screen!

Bohemian Rhapsody is one for the books! This film is amazing from start to finish. The movie embodies the greatness that is Queen and was Freddie Mercury. I HIGHLY recommend for all to see on the big screen.

This is one of 2018 films I was highly anticipating. The acting by all was fantastic, but I was blown away by Rami Malek's portrayal of Freddie Mercury. I believe that if Mercury was alive today, he would be very pleased with Malek. I've been a fan of Malek for a time now, since he was part of the Egyptian coven in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, then he role in Mr. Robot. Malek is someone that stays under the radar as far as his acting, but I think that will all change once everyone experience Malek as Mercury. You can almost call his acting on Bohemian Rhapsody iconic, just like Freddie Mercury was. Now, don't think that Malek was the only actor in the film that blew me away, the whole cast was just perfection for this film.

The film caused "Goosies" as Jennifer Lopez would say. I would catch myself bouncing to the music, laughing out loud, getting misty eyed, and excited. You name it, I experienced it throughout the film. I did not want it to end, even after 143 mins. I will say, the movie had me googling all the things about Queen and Freddie Mercury. I was not a die hard fan before the film, Queen was a bit before my time. But I do love many of their songs, but seeing this film, I grew such respect and admiration for the band. This reminds me of one scene in the film, the Mike Myers's character Ray Foster says "Mark these words: NO ONE will play Queen."

Bohemian Rhapsody will ROCK YOU from start to finish! See it on the big screen to really enjoy every second. I'm already wanting to see it again. Seriously, just stellar! 5 huge gold stars! And if you didn't know, this film has been in the "works" since 2010. It has had cast, directors and film companies drop and pick up in the last few years. Glad it was given up on, if not we wouldn't have been able to see experience the greatness that Bohemian Rhapsody is.

Movie Review: The Hate U give

The Hate U Give
Directed By: George Tillman, Jr.
Screenplay By: Audrey Wells | Angie Thomas (novel)
Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Issa Rae, Sabrina Carpenter, with Common and Anthony Mackie
MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. THE HATE U GIVE is based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie.

2018 is a good year for young adult genre films. Though few and far between, this year has had great, learning experience-type films.

One great movie that everyone should rush out to watch with their favorite young adult is The Hate U Give. Adapted from Angie Thomas' novel, by the same name, Hate tells the of youth exercising the positive power of their voice.

Hate grabbed the audience from the get-go. The opening scene introduced the audience to a family learning about the harsh realities of racial prejudice, as it related to criminal justice.  Maverick (played by Russell Hornsby) was teaching his children how to react if they are ever apart from each other and encountered by police. Maverick, and his family are Black.

But Hate isn't Maverick's story. Hate is about Starr (played by Amandla Stenberg). Starr's teenage perspective is what connects the audience to the story. Starr lives in one part of town, but goes to high school in another part of town, on purpose. Starr and her siblings attend the private school because Starr's mom (played by Regina Hall) was hoping to spare her children from the bad elements of the family's living environment.

The script feels real.  Starr's discussion of her two facades and the elaboration of her "school self" and her at "home self" will ring authentic to younger adults, especially as it pertains to social media. Each side of Starr's self introduced its own cast and its own setting. All of the pieces of the puzzle provided broad appeal. Nothing felt too foreign.

The story was, at times, difficult. But the topics were real. The subjects were timely.  The angst was genuine. The frustration was deserved.

The musical aspect and connection to Tupac was an added bonus. The rapper's philosophies tied the plot together nicely. It felt like the story was trying to convey an important message and it was willing to take different approaches to that message in order to reach a larger audience. As anyone who has ever had to convey a message to a teenager knows, creativity in message delivery is a plus.

The movie isn't perfect. The last act of Hate went on a little too long. The point had been made, the audience had been sold, and then, there was a riot, literally. The riot came with an excess ten minutes. Felt somewhat preachy. But all other aspects of the movie were great.

Go see The Hate U Give. Take any young adult that is willing to be seen with adults in a movie theater. Bring a crowd of teens. It's not too violent or four-lettered to bring the whole family. Hate is a great discussion starter and horizon broadener. Plus, the story is gripping. The Hate U Give is playing everywhere now.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Release: November 2, 2018
ABOUT THE FILM

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is the story of how Freddie Mercury and his fellow band members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon formed Queen - one of the most iconic rock groups of all time. The film follows Queen as they produce hit after hit, topping the charts while constantly evolving their sound. Through disparate songs like Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, We Will Rock You and countless others, the band reaches unparalleled success and Freddie becomes one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.

Behind that veil of success, however, Freddie struggles to reconcile his duality. Forever trying to determine where he fits in the world as a Parsi immigrant from Zanzibar coming to terms with a sexuality even he can’t define in a culture bound by stereotypes and expectations. Freddie dares to defy them all but also pays a price. Lured into excess and surrounded by darker influences, Freddie shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. What becomes an attempt to redefine himself as a solo artist, ends in disappointment and further isolation.

Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Brian, Roger and John - his rock’n’roll family - Freddie comes to terms with the realization that the magic of Queen and their success lies in all of them working together, challenging one another. Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid - the biggest concert in history. But fate and past behaviors throw a devastating obstacle at him, one that forces him to confront then accept his own mortality. Pulling himself up from personal strife one more time to overcome the odds, the band puts on one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. On Freddie’s terms, not the rest of the world’s.
