#BattleoftheSexes
In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s World #1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

Movie Review: Table 19

Table 19
Director: Jeffrey Blitz
WritersJay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow, Craig Robinson
MPAA Rating: PG-13

Ex-maid of honor Eloise, having been relieved of her duties after being unceremoniously dumped by the best man via text, decides to attend the wedding anyway only to find herself seated with 5 "random" guests at the dreaded Table 19.
The first time I saw the trailer for this movie, I got super excited! Lisa Kudrow, Anna Kendrick, Stephen Merchant, AND Craig Robinson together in a movie? I was sure it'd be hilarious and amazing...and it was pretty funny, just not amazing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the worst movie in the world, I just feel like it felt a little chick flick-y and I am not a chick flick fan...

Let me start by saying that I loved the chemistry of the whole cast together. It was the most mismatched group of people that come together to be friends. At first, of course, they didn't even know each other, but, given certain circumstances, they end up kind of forced to hang out and end up becoming friends. I loved the way Anna interacts especially with June Squibb, who plays Nanny Jo, and is one of the sweetest and funniest characters of them all. Stephen Merchant does an excellent job at playing a what the Brits call a knob head (dumb), and is the one that makes you laugh the most -believe it or not.

The story of the movie is actually a cute one, centered around Anna Kendrick and Wyatt Russell (Teddy). As you can see in the trailer below, Anna (Eloise) goes to her ex-boyfriend's (Teddy) sister's wedding, there she gets sent to the table of the people who are just the ones you are "forced" to invite to a wedding. Eloise is a little hostile and rude at first, but it is later explained why that is. Nanny Jo used to baby sit Teddy and his sister when they were kids, and is the sweetest ever...she's also a pot smoker and the show stealer. She is the first one that becomes empathetic towards Eloise, as well as the others, like a good grandmother. This is how the whole story really starts developing. I do want to add that the story line is actually a believable plot.

There isn't much more I can say without ruining the whole movie, so I will leave you with this: if you need a laugh and a cute movie to lift your spirits, then this is the movie for you. If you are more into drama or serious kind of movies, then this definitely isn't for you. It's a chick flick with more humor than your average chick flick, with lots of great actors who really did a great job.

Movie Review: Fox Searchlight's A Bigger Splash

A Bigger Splash
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Writers: David Kajganich, Alain Page
Starring: Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson
MPAA Rating: Rated R for graphic nudity, some strong sexual content, language and brief drug use
Official Socials: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | IMDb
In A BIGGER SPLASH, the lives of a high profile couple, a famous rock star and a filmmaker, (Tilda Swinton and Matthias Schoenaerts) vacationing and recovering on the idyllic sun-drenched and remote Italian island of Pantelleria are disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter (Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson) - creating a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved.

A true Rock N' Roll story. One that shows what it could be like to get away from that kind of lifestyle, and get your life back on track afterwards. A rekindled flame is what sparks off this story and takes audiences through a short vacation that could end up in only one way.

I loved this film. This is what most people would call an artistic film. In my mind - I understand why we classify films as "artsy" films - but ALL movies are artistic. When I say this film was what everyone would call artistic I mean that it's a slow story and Guadagnino focuses on the character behind it, including beautiful shots that would make any lover of film immediately love the movie. One of the best things I heard as I was walking out of the theater was "Did you see that cinematography?! That is what really attracted me - that and how it was edited together." Usually this is how I'm talking with my friends about a movie, so to overhear someone else speaking like this gave me hope that film goers are actually appreciating how the film is made.

But, with an artistic film comes a story that is slow and leaves most audience members going "What did I just watch?!" I overheard a different conversation that went along these lines. They were confused, didn't understand why they had sat through the film. While most people would've gotten attached to characters - with Ralph Fiennes' amazing portrayal of a musical producer who actively loves his job - others will want a gripping tale that throws them around.

For me I loved this film. Ralph Fiennes' dancing is something every Harry Potter fan needs to see. Yes the story was slow going, but it was also heart breaking-ly real. Issues get brought up that everyone has to deal with in life, and yet everyone wants to not realize we deal with.

Book Review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

The book that inspired the hit film!

Sundance U.S. Dramatic Audience Award

Sundance Grand Jury Prize

This is the funniest book you’ll ever read about death.

It is a universally acknowledged truth that high school sucks. But on the first day of his senior year, Greg Gaines thinks he’s figured it out. The answer to the basic existential question: How is it possible to exist in a place that sucks so bad? His strategy: remain at the periphery at all times. Keep an insanely low profile. Make mediocre films with the one person who is even sort of his friend, Earl.

This plan works for exactly eight hours. Then Greg’s mom forces him to become friends with a girl who has cancer. This brings about the destruction of Greg’s entire life.

Fiercely funny, honest, heart-breaking—this is an unforgettable novel from a bright talent, now also a film that critics are calling "a touchstone for its generation" and "an instant classic."

Recently, this book has been getting so much buzz due to its movie debut, and after watching the trailer, it seemed like something I would want to read anyway. It did not disappoint. It's witty, sarcastic, hilarious, and purely honest.

Greg S. Gaines is the "Me" in the title and the narrator. I don't know how the author got into such a mindset to write like this character, but it is brilliant. There are no gaps in Greg; this character is so consistent. He carries out this persona of a slightly socially awkward, insecure senior in high school. It's great. You're reading the book and it feels like you're just talking to a friend. A strange, introverted friend, but a friend.

The real meat of the story begins when Rachel, an old friend of Greg's, gets leukemia. Now, Greg makes it very clear from the beginning that this is not a story about a girl who beats the odds and falls madly in love with her new found friend via cancer.

In fact, Rachel has very little dialogue in this story. This story really is about how Greg learns about himself by having this experience with Rachel. Also how Greg and his friend Earl grow together. It's a beautiful story. Even though the topic of death is something that comes up frequently, it's still one of the most hilarious things I have ever read. Greg's lack of confidence mixed with Earl's blunt personality is the best combination of characters I have seen in a long time.

However, due to this book being written as if the narrator were speaking to you, it got a bit rambly in some parts and some part were a bit irrelevant. Even if they still made me laugh out loud.

There's so much more that could be said about this book, but you'll just have to read it for yourself to understand the full gravity of it.

Also, Earl may just be my favorite character of all time.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a 'co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer - he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be.
