Genre: Contemporary
Released: February 9th 2016

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

I’m a writer repped by Suzie Townsend at New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc. I split my time between my hometown East Longmeadow, Massachusetts and Los Angeles. After graduating with a BFA in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California, I decided to try my hand at writing a novel. My debut RED QUEEN came out of the terrifying, unemployed year after college.

Currently I’m revising the second book in the RED QUEEN series, along with pursuing other projects in literature and film. My proudest achievements are riding a horse in the mountains of Montana and navigating from London to Edinburgh without GPS.

One winner will get a RED QUEEN Prize pack from HarperTeen, which includes:
- 1 Physical Copy of CRUEL CROWN (0.1 & 0.2 Red Queen)
- 1 Red Queen foam sword that reads “Kneel or Bleed”

"Kneel or bleed"

What a great tag line. A tag that follows the story to the very end.

If you read the Red Queen, then you know Mare, Cal and the gang are on the run. On Glass Sword, we are presented with new adventures, characters and twits. Although all these were good, most were predictable. However, I really liked the last one. Even if I am not fan of this character, I do not want to name, due to obvious reasons. All I have to say to this person is, well played.

In Glass Sword, Mare is still on the run. We follow her with her struggles, her inner demons and her challenges. She is trying her best to keep everyone safe. I need to give her props for this. The girl did not give up, even if life is not fair with her. She was very determined to make a difference and to proof her points.

Cal is just there. He's following orders while also fighting his inner demons. I do not blame him as his entire world is turned upside down. As for Maven... Yeah, he is still evil as ever. He is so clever and is always one step ahead. The man has great strategies.

Glass Sword was an interesting sequel. One moment you are reading about a fight, the next, within sentences, things are fine. It was giving me a whiplash. I had to re-read parts to make sure I did not miss anything. Then there were explainable moments, in which left me dumbfounded. I hope these are given reasons and explanations on the next book.

Overall, Glass Sword was interesting enough to finish the story. It was predictable yet the last section had you like "Heck yeah! Something is about to go down", which something or someone went down... *wink eye* Also, I feel the story is a combination of so many stories I've read before, hence why I think it's predictable. However, with the way things are going, I think I choosing Team Maven! He is such a complex character and I am looking forward to read his next step.

Press Release:

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS ANNOUNCES TWO-BOOK DEAL WITH VICTORIA AVEYARD

New York, NY (September 15, 2015)—HarperCollins Publishers announced today the acquisition of a two-book deal with Victoria Aveyard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Red Queen series. Suzie Townsend sold North American rights on behalf of New Leaf Literary and Media, Inc. to Kristen Pettit, Executive Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books.

Book one in the newly signed two-book deal, set to publish in 2018, will be the fourth installment in the epic Red Queen series, which focuses on a world divided by blood. Those with Red blood are commoners and serve the Silver-blooded elite, who have been gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare Barrow is scraping by as a thief until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court, where she discovers she has an ability all her own—even though her blood is Red. The second book in the deal, a to-be-determined novel, is scheduled for release in 2019.

“Victoria Aveyard burst onto the scene as the only first-time author to debut at #1 on the New York Times Young Adult bestseller list,” said Suzanne Murphy, President and Publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books. “We are enormously proud of her success and are thrilled to make HarperCollins her home.”

Kristen Pettit adds, “Victoria Aveyard’s talent is immense, undeniable, and extremely rare. Her scenes leap from the page and immerse you in her intricately wrought world. I am thrilled to continue to work with Victoria to bring her particular brand of gripping, visceral prose to readers everywhere.”

The highly anticipated second novel in Aveyard’s Red Queen series, Glass Sword, will publish February 9, 2016, with the third novel to follow in 2017. In addition, two e-novellas set in the Red Queen world, Queen Song and Steel Scars, are set to release September 1, 2015, and January 5, 2016, respectively. Red Queen has sold into 31 territories and is already a worldwide bestseller. Finally, movie rights for Red Queen were sold to Universal Studios. Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad) penned the script and Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct.

The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers. To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change. Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

The setting of a novel is one of the most important elements of a story. Your characters can be the best ever. However, if the reader can not visualize the land or world that the author created, then the sense of being in the midst of everything going on, is never established and slowly forgotten. In Red Queen you are immediately immersed  into two very live worlds. The world of Reds and the world of Silvers. A setting that is clearly defined in the authors description of both worlds.  The color of your blood determines your ultimate status in life, forever. Mare is a daughter, a sister, a provider and a protector. Her deep crimson blood signifies that she’ll always live a life of despair, ultimate need, and the feeling of never having enough to live on. Cal is the reflection of royalty. His blood runs like molten lava the color of shiny grey, as he is a Silver. A reflection of all things great. All things good. Unstoppable. All powerful.

Their worlds are like oil and vinegar. Shaken with war and destruction, however never mixed with kindness or equality. Separate, always. Reading Red Queen gave me the feeling of "de ja vu." it almost felt as if I had already entered this world of super powers, social status, fighting for causes, secrets unsolved and undiscovered before. This storyline has several love interest embedded throughout with Mare and Cal, and Maven and maybe even another,  which always kept me wondering.

Lastly, as I pushed through to see how the events of Mare’s life would unfold with all the struggles set upon her, my original feeling was that this novel just hadn't reached the ultimate happy place that I like to be at.  But then within the last quarter of the novel, Ms. Aveyard brought it home with excitement, twists and bunch of other things that I just didn't expect.  I wish I could go back and tell my students that the whole concept of never judge a book by its cover is somewhat false.  This cover spoke to me.   My interest for Red Queen was peeked with the cover. The crown. Upside down, dripping of crimson blood. It tells a story. One of power, one of love, one of life. I look forward to what the author has to bring in her next novel of this series, as Mare’s life just may depend on it.

Excerpt

I blame my rapidly beating heart on the melody, the music that brims with so much life. Somehow this night reminds me of Julian’s lessons, his histories of the world before our own. That was a world of empires, of corruption, of war—and more freedom than I’ve ever known. But the people of that time are gone, their dreams in ruin, existing only in smoke and ash. It’s our nature, Julian would say. We destroy. It’s the constant of our kind. No matter the color of blood, man will always fall. I didn’t understand that lesson a few days ago, but now, with his hands in mine, guiding me with the lightest touch, I’m beginning to see what he meant. I can feel myself falling.
