- A professional singer on the side, the actress Jacqueline McKenzie made her onscreen debut in the psychological classroom thriller "Wordplay" before emerging as one of the most captivating talents in her native Australia, starring in the 1992 neo-Nazi drama "Romper Stomper" as a drug addict opposite a young Russell Crowe. In rapid succession, the actress delivered chameleonic performances as an environmentalist on the comedic sci-fi miniseries "Stark," and as two separate women suffering from mental illnesses in "Halifax f.p: Lies of the Mind" and the schizophrenic-love story "Angel Baby," the latter of which garnered her an award from the venerable Australian Film Institute. - When the "New Australian Film" movement began in the late 1970s and early 80s, several actresses rose to prominence including Helen Morse and Judy Davis (who went on to earn international fame). Among the most talented was Wendy Hughes, an attractive, elegant-looking brunette who originally intended to pursue a career in dance. When she hit her teens, though, Hughes switched interests to acting and went on to train at the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and hone her craft on stage with the Melbourne Theatre Company. She moved to features in 1974 with "Petersen," playing the wife of a college professor who takes an interest in a married student. Hughes first reached American audiences as a woman involved with an ambitious newsreel photographer in Philip Noyce's "Newsfront" (1978), a role that brought her the first of seven (to date) nominations for the Australian Film Institute award. The following year, she earned plaudits as the maternal figure to aspiring writer Sybylla Melvyn (Judy Davis) in "My Brilliant Career" and initiated a collaboration with director Paul Cox with "Kostas," in which she portrayed a genteel divorcee romantically pursued by a Greek journalist.

However, his most acclaimed small screen turn was as the eccentric scientist Walter Bishop on "Fringe" (Fox, 2008-13). Produced by J.J. Abrams, the cult science fiction series was anchored by Noble's performance as a man seemingly driven mad by his experiments who then emerged from an institution after nearly 20 years to continue investigating strange phenomena. His work as Bishop made him a perennial favorite during Emmy season, as well as a much-loved character among the show's devoted fans. Having made the successful transition from Down Under to American productions, there was no doubt that for Noble the best was yet to come.
