Fat Stack Friday: Friday November 8, 2024

Happy Friday! Here's my haul this week!

For review:

Fateless (Fateless #1) by Julie Kagawa

I love me some Kagawa. When I saw this on Edelweiss I knew I needed it. Excited to jump into this new series!

From Libby/Hoopla:

Lights Out (Into the Darkness #1) by Navessa Allen

This one has been hyped up so I thought I'd give it a try. And the male narrator is Jacob Morgan who I LOVE! This one is very dark. Not much plot until about the middle but still a fun ride. I'd read the next one.

Hexed (Never After #6) by Emily McIntire

I've really liked all the books I've read in this series. These are what got me into dark romance. I'm excited for this story. But I will say I'm not loving the narrator for the male MMC.

First Down (Beyond the Play #1) by Grace Reilly

Started this one on Libby and, ugh, I could not do it. The narrators were horrible. Maybe I'll give it a try on Kindle. I do love me some sports romance.

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak

I will say I was skeptical about this one. I read his second one and was not impressed, even after seeing all the praise for this one. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one!

Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday

I will admit, I picked this one up because I love hockey romance and I saw it recommended in one of my reading groups. I'm always weary of taking recommendations from those groups because there is such a range of what people like. But then I saw Joshua Jackson was the narrator and I absolutely adore him. This was cute, not great, but fun enough. The FMC was meh.

What did you get this week?

ARC Review: The Iron Traitor (Call of the Forgotten #2) by Julie Kagawa

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

Review:

I'd like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an eARC of this title to read and give my honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
This book picks up where the last left off. Ethan is back after his journey into fey territory. But things are twisting again and he must put himself back out there to make sure his nephew, Keiran is safe.
I think I enjoyed Ethan a bit more in this book. He seemed to have more depth, probably from all he went through in the first book. There's less of the tough, brooding teen, and more of the man who is on a mission to keep people safe. His relationship with Kenzie is really well done. But the bulk of this book does focus on Kieran, despite it being Ethan's POV. From the title you know Kieran is going to do dumb things, and all this over a girl? Well, teens are stupid at times, as we well know.
Kagawa continued with her world building in this book. I love her writing. She just has a way of truly transporting you into her world and feeling like you are truly immersed there, surrounded by it at all times. Her writing flows really well and helps keep the pacing of the book regular.
As with all her books, we get lots of action to see us through. And this book doesn't suffer from second book syndrome, which I'm always afraid I'll see in a series. But Kagawa really does manage to evoke so much emotion with her words and I really love that about her. Then there's the idea of forbidden love, which I just love because it really does bring a great amount of tension to a book and makes me want to keep reading so I can see how it will all work out (and it better be an HEA).
Finally, hello cliffhanger! It's almost evil but definitely makes me want to jump into the next book right now!

ARC Review: The Lost Prince (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #1) by Julie Kagawa

Don’t look at Them.
Never let Them know
you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’d dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My name is Ethan Chase.
And I may not live to see my
eighteenth birthday.

Review:

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an eARC of this title to read and give my honest review. The opinions her are my own.

More stories from Kagawa's fey universe? YES PLEASE. And Ethan's story? LET'S GO!

It's Ethan's turn to be thrust into the land of Fairy. Despite him wanting to protect everyone from it, he has no choice but to find himself immersed in it just as his sister had.

I love Ethan. He's grown into a smart young man who is fiercely loyal to his friends and family. And he'll do anything to keep them safe, even when it means entering into a world where he never wanted to go. He's a little bit touch, a little bit of an ass, and a lot bit full of anger. I enjoyed watching him work through that somewhat in this story. And I enjoyed watching it happen because he met someone: Kenzie. She's also kick ass, and steals Ethan's heart. And then there's Kieran, the princeling. He's helping Ethan and Kenzie navigate his realm. I love how he connects us to The Iron Fey stories.

The plot is full of lots of fey magic. Lots of action and world building. And of course, plot twists because this would not be a Kagawa book without those! Her writing for this book is spot on. I may love this series as much as The Iron Fey when it's all said and done. But we shall see.

I do think you could read this without having the background from The Iron Fey BUT I think that series really gives you so much more to go on and makes things easier to understand in this story (mostly with who the characters who make appearances are and what the background has to do with Ethan).

Overall, I once again truly enjoyed this book and I'm excited to dive into the next one!

Review: Rogue (Talon #2) by Julie Kagawa @HarlequinTEEN @Jkagawa

From the limitless imagination of bestselling author Julie Kagawa comes the next fantastic adventure in the Talon Saga.

Deserter. Traitor. Rogue.

Ember Hill left the dragon organization Talon to take her chances with rebel dragon Cobalt and his crew of rogues. But Ember can’t forget the sacrifice made for her by the human boy who could have killed her—Garret Xavier Sebastian, a soldier of the dragonslaying Order of St. George, the boy who saved her from a Talon assassin, knowing that by doing so, he’d signed his own death warrant.

Determined to save Garret from execution, Ember must convince Cobalt to help her break into the Order’s headquarters. With assassins after them and Ember’s own brother helping Talon with the hunt, the rogues find an unexpected ally in Garret and a new perspective on the underground battle between Talon and St. George.

A reckoning is brewing and the secrets hidden by both sides are shocking and deadly. Soon Ember must decide: Should she retreat to fight another day…or start an all-out war?

Review:

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an eARC of this book to read and give an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
I enjoyed Talon so wanting to read the second book was a no brainer. I love the idea of dragons in a book, it's more unique than other beings I've seen so far.
This book picks up where Talon left off. Ember is Rogue, she's in cahoots with Cobalt, and they are on a mission to save Garrett.
For me, this book started off great and with a blast. I had high hopes. But once Garrett was saved, the rest of the book suffered from "middle book syndrome" though this is not even the middle book in the series since there are 5. The action scenes seemed a bit contrived. As if they were inserted into the book as filler. Many of them didn't move the book along as I'd hope. So the pacing ended up being slow. We did see much more dragon action in this book, though, so that was pretty cool.
I did love the different POVs. I'm always happy to read a book this way as it gives me insight into each characters brain and how they think and see things. And it's always interesting to see how they see things differently from their counterparts. This one still gives us Ember. Garrett, and Cobalt/Riley but as shown in the last chapter of Talon, we now have Dante. I have to say, I do not like him. I know that's part of the plot but I felt his character was very flat. And, while I know the dragons may be much older than their human years, Dante's voice was much older. Given the fact that he and Ember are the same age, and she comes across as much more naive, I felt his character was off.
There's still romance in this one. The building up of the love triangle. But it's not a central part of the plot, perse. It's mostly Ember contemplating why she is attracted to both guys and figuring out her human versus her dragon side when it comes to that attraction.
Does the end of the book come with a cliffhanger? Kind of, sort of, but not really. I mean the next book is called Soldier so, although you watch what happens with Garrett, you still know more is coming.
Kagawa's writing remains entertaining though very typically YA with it's love triangle trope and the FMC always making stupid mistakes that get her in trouble. But overall this series remains fun and I will continue on to see where it leads!

A fighter dedicated to saving humankind from dragons in strictest secrecy.

That was what Garret Xavier Sebastian thought he was part of as a soldier of the Order of St. George. What he learned from a fiery dragon hatchling twisted all he believed in and set him on a collision course with certain death-but not without a chance to put things right.

Betrayed and on the run again, Ember and rogue dragon Riley discover an unthinkable truth about Talon and St. George. They'll need Garret's skills and insider knowledge of the Order to negotiate an impossible deal-and if they fail, there will be no way to stop all-out war.

ARC Review: Talon (Talon #1) by Julie Kagawa @HarlequinTEEN @Jkagawa

Talon (Talon #1) photo 17331828_zps1814b8a0.jpgLong ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

Brooke's Review:
I want to thank Harlequin Teen for providing me with an early copy of this book for an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

I have to say that when I read the blurb for this book I got all kinds of excited. I enjoyed Kagawa's Iron Fey series, but I loved her Blood of Eden series more. And now she was writing a series about dragons? How could it go wrong. And after having read the first chapter that she posted online, I knew for sure I had to have this book to read. So I jumped in with both feet and held on tight for the ride.

The book opens and we are introduced to Ember. She's a young dragon who has been training all her life to be assimilated into the human world. At 16 she is finally getting the chance as she and her twin brother, Dante, are placed in a house on the shore of California. Ember is excited to have the summer to live as a "normal" girl: no training, no school, no commitments. Ember truly comes across as a normal teenage girl. I don't get the gist that she's a dragon unless she's telling us about it. I wish I could have seen more conflict with this. She's trained that humans are the enemy but she easily assimilates and takes on human characteristics.

And a YA book wouldn't be complete if there wasn't some romance and conflict. This comes in the form of Garrett, a soldier for the order of St. George (Ember's enemy) and Riley, a rogue dragon determined to show Ember her true potential. Garrett comes across as this sweet, inexperienced guy (at least when it comes to females) who is determined to keep his secrets. Riley, on the other hand,is a gruff, sexy guy who doesn't hold back. The two guys are in direct conflict with Ember's training: dragons don't show or have emotions. But there's more to life than what Ember has been taught and both these guys show her that.

I love the idea of this book. I love the idea of dragons hiding within our society. But what I was missing in this book is the why. Talon is said to exist to help protect dragons. That they were hunted to near extinction by the order of St. George. But we never get what the actual conflict was between the human's and the dragons. What exactly happened in history to make the dragons and humans hate each other so? I needed this back story and it just did not exist in this installment of the series. I'm surprised because in previous books I've read from this author, there is always a ton of world building. What is the history of Talon? The order of St. George? Give me something!I didn't get that so much in this book.

I do love Julie's writing. It's easy to read and flows well. I will say her voice sounded completely different to me in this book. But I think that's a good thing considering it's a new series. She mixes romance and action well, although I felt the story was slow in a few places and I thought maybe there could have been more conflict scenes to really show us the relationships between humans and dragons. Instead we get mostly Ember's conflict with her emotions and how she wants to be just a "normal" girl.

Overall the book was a good enough read, but I didn't find it to be on par with Kagawa's other writing. I will most likely pick up the next book so I can see what happens as this one does end on a cliffhanger.

The Cover Contessa's Review:
From the first chapter of the first book in this series I was hooked! I mean, who doesn't like a compelling heroine, faced with inscrutable odds, wielding a katana? So, given the opportunity to read the last book in this series, which feels like it's taken forever to come out, I jumped at the chance. I want to thank Net Galley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an early ecopy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in now way influenced my opinion or review.

So, I truly love the color of this cover. While I'm not a huge fan of the fact that they changed the covers (I know the UK ones still have the girl on the front!), I do love Purple. I do get the bird reference, makes sense seeing as how Sarren calls her "little bird", but I still think there could be more to them. I suppose the books are really so great they hold their own, no matter the cover. But if I didn't know this series, I can't say the cover would pull me in right off the shelf.

I cannot promise there will not be spoilers for book 1 or 2 in this review so if you haven't read those, STOP HERE! You have been warned!

This book picks up right where the second one left off. Allie has given in to her monster, after having lost Zeke to Sarren and his torture. She has joined forces with Kanin and Jackal (who would have thunk it?) and wants to exact her revenge.

Allie continues to be the most kick butt female YA character I have EVER met. She's the reason I wanted to continue on in this series. She's snarky and crude. But she also has a heart that she can't deny, despite the fact that she has vowed to give in to her monster and do what she must do. She starts out introverted and angry at the world when the book starts. She kicks the butts of rabids throughout the book, with a vengeance she didn't have prior. Allie's pain is palpable throughout the book. I wanted to cry for and at the same time shake her back to her senses! She really had me worried that her humanity was lost forever. And I just would not have been able to handle that! But do not despair, Allie truly never gives up hope, and is determined to "save the world" despite her brooding!

As for Kanin, WOW! There is so much growth between his relationship with Allie in this book. It's fantastic. He truly becomes her father figure and helps her to embrace who she is and what she is. He helps her to understand she doesn't need to be the monster everyone thinks she is, that she can choose her own path and make her own destiny. Of course he has been doing this from the start, but it's so much more prominent in this book. I love how quiet he is because when he does say something, it's truly needed. And he probably has the biggest heart of all, despite his seeming cold on the surface.

Jackel, oh Jackal. How I fell in love with his character in this book, when previously I just wanted to cut his head off. He's still snarky and a jerk, and terribly cocky. BUT you see his fondness of Allie grow, which is amazing. And in the end he truly takes her on as a sister, even though he stays rough around the edges in her interactions with her. He's still self-centered and cares most about himself, but you certainly see that he has potential. One thing about Jackal, he's brutally honest and doesn't hold back. I think that helps with kicking Allie's butt into gear so she can get the job done! I would love a novella from him!

As for the plot and pacing, WOW. Julie just has this knack for keeping you on your toes for the entire book. I can say the one thing that bothered me was how many times they fought with the rabids. Did I understand the need for them to have these show-downs, I sure did. But it just seemed like the rabids waited around every corner and it was always the same: rabids came charging in at them, they swung their blades, cut off some heads and other body parts, and then they were all down and Allie, Kanin and Jackal won again. I would have liked to see them take a little more of a hit. Don't get me wrong, it's not like they made it out every time without injuries, but it just felt a bit repetitive.

Despite that, the story as a whole was spectacular. I loved the journey Kanin, Allie and Jackal went on and their progression as a family. I loved the banter between Jackal and Allie, especially. There's nothing like a kick but heroine being stomped on by a cocky headed brother! And the world building in this book continues. We know that the places outside of Eden have been decimated, but we also get a look inside Eden, and believe me you will be surprised. Julie takes us back to places we have been before and re-introduces us to characters we loved and missed. She also adds surprising twists which made my heart skip a few beats!

I can honestly say that this book is one of the best conclusions to any series I have read. Initially I was worried about how it would end. I was worried that I would be jumping into another book where my heart was crushed to pieces. But, while there are certainly teary parts that made me want to scream NOOOOOO, I think Julie knew how to keep her readers happy. I loved how it ended, I was totally satisfied with where Julie took the characters and their growth. I was immersed in the world never wanting to leave. She made me laugh, she made me cry, she made my heart jump up into my throat. All things I love in a book as they are what keeps me wanting to read on!

I cannot wait to read Talon and be immersed once again in Kagawa's writing. She is truly genius!

Julie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.
When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job.
To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dogtrainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time.
Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyper-active Papillon.

Review and ARC Reveiw Revisited: Blood of Eden

In honor of my being invited to the Harlequin Blogger Teen Breakfast for BEA, I thought I would revisit these reviews, as Julie Kagawa will be there!

And, since I really loved these books, I wanted to share them with you all again!

To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred ofthem—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.
Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what and who is worth dying for…again.
Enter Julie Kagawa's dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins

Pulication Date: April 24, 2012

The Contessa's Review:
I want to thank Net Galley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an ecopy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

I need to start off by saying that I never read the blurb or any reviews for this. So, going into it, I really had no idea what it was about! I had heard such great things about it, and I had read Julie's other series, The Iron Fey, so I figured I would just jump right in. And I'm so happy I did. I was totally engrossed with this story. I could not put it down (except I had to work and eat and sleep and take care of my family!). So it was a pleasure to read this for sure. And then as I read it and realized it was both paranormal and dystopian? What a great mix! I have only read one other book like this, Day Soldiers by Brandon Hale, which I LOVED. So this idea is still new and unique and totally captivating.

Can we say cover love? I love this cover. I am a little surprised that the cover model is not Asian, tho, considering the main character is. But it does depict something very significant from within the story. So, after reading this book, I completely understood why this was chosen for the cover. I can honestly say that I am really unhappy with the change in the cover and will be purchasing the UK paperback of the second book so that my books will match (even tho one will be hard cover and the other will be paperback).

The characters in this book were so well described and really great to watch grow. They are definitely characters who are easily relatable. I felt sympathy for them when necessary, and I was rooting for them when the time came. They had depth and nuance. It was great watching their personalities unfold and take shape.

Allison is tough as nails. I totally love this about her. She's strong and strong willed for sure. She goes after what she wants. However, she is a bit selfish at times, and this does come back to bite her. But she absolutely learns from her mistakes and uses that knowledge to help others. It was great to watch Allie's struggle as she came to terms with being a vampire. And one of my most favorite things about Allie is that she is a vampire, that Kagawa chose to take her main character and turn her into a monster! Most YA paranormal books have the main character being human, or at least mostly human, and it was nice to see a story told from a different perspective.

Zeke, well, I wasn't sure what to make of him at first. I knew he would turn out to be the love interest, but I just didn't see how it could possibly work. I mean, the idea of human and vampire has already been touched upon in the Twilight series, but this was so much more in depth. There were many more rules here, such as Allie not being able to be out and about during the day. I wasn't sure how Kagawa would over come this, but she came up with some great ideas to do it. And so, the relationship between Zeke and Allie became possible. And Zeke is very strong and strong willed. I definitely felt the clash between him and Allie and thought for sure that the two strong personalities would never work together. But they did. He's also loving and caring, and of course totally swoon worthy. And he comes with lots and lots of baggage, which Kagawa slowly reveals to help shape. He is sensitive and kind and never expects anything in return.
Kanin, well, he is obviously Allie's father figure during this story. He's cryptic, but he reveals things as the time comes. And he teaches Allie what she needs to know to survive. She is connected to him in many ways, as is revealed throughout the story.

Kagawa's writing is so different in this book than in her Iron Fey series. Unlike others, I was not a huge fan of Iron Fey. It was nice enough, but I felt like the story lacked something. Well, Kagawa has certainly fine tuned her craft with this book. Her descriptions are spot on. I felt like I was right there with the characters during the action scenes: being chased, heart beating out of my chest. And I could clearly picture in my life what the towns and surrounding areas looked like. It was great watching the world unfold right before my eyes impossible not to feel as if I, too, were a character in this story, watching it unfold and develop. The setting was reminiscent of Oliver's Delirium, a walled city surrounded by unknown wilds.

Kagawa has shaped a dark tale that will pull you in and completely absorb you. She has created a world where there is a little for everyone: the paranormal lovers and post-appocolypitic world lovers both! There is no doubt in my mind that the next installment of this series will do the same. She will have your heart racing, pulse throbbing and mind reeling with this story. If you are a lover of vampires, then pick this one up. If you love dystopian worlds, then this is the book for you! It's a refreshingly different story that has me chomping at the bit for more. Well done Ms. Kagawa!
5/5 Stars.

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike

The Contessa's Review:
I want to thank Net Galley and Harlequin Teen for providing me with an eARC of this book. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review. When I saw that it was being offered, I jumped at the chance to get a copy and I am so glad that I did. I really enjoyed the first book in this series.

So, I will be honest and say that I really do not like the cover to this book. I own the first book with the original cover and I hate how it's been changed. I dislike this cover so much that I will be asking a friend in the UK to purchase me a copy of the paperback (despite the fact that I always prefer hard cover when it's available) because then my covers will actually match.

That being said, it was almost the only thing that I didn't like about this book.

Allison is once again the main focus and narrator of this book. She continues to be strong. However, I was getting totally annoyed with her references to Zeke in the first few chapters. The fact that she misses him and feels terrible that she is not with him was obvious from her being torn in the first book when she left him. But, she references this at least once in every chapter in the first few chapters and it was totally annoying me. But I still enjoyed her voice and how she told her story. She is very authentic. I love how she picks things apart and is smart about how she approaches situation. She has a good sense of self-preservation, as well as a sense of how to protect others. Best of all, it's great to watch Allison battle with herself to keep her humanity as she tries to keep control of her vampire side, but cannot always do so.

It was nice to see that this book was not a filler, as many second books in a trilogy tend to be. Usually they are just a bridge to get the characters from the first book to the last. Not so with this book. This book has a story unto itself and one that is totally in line with where the plot line is going. This book delved more into the world building that was started in the first book. We get to see the inner workings of a vampire city and a deeper understanding of many of the secondary characters. I loved watching the secondary characters reveal more and more of themselves. We also seen the return of characters that we met in the first book (tho I won't say who because I don't want to spoil anything).

As with the first book, Julie's writing is really great. I love her descriptions. I can feel the emotions of her characters as they progress and I can totally picture their surroundings as they make their way through the story. The action scenes are intense and really kept me on the edge of my seat. Each chapter kept me wanting more and I found it hard to find a good place to put the book down because I was wanting to see where the story was headed. And Ms. Kagawa definitely gives us a few oooo, ahhh, and OMGosh moments in this book! Julie throws you right into the thick of things from the beginning and drags your heart through the book (view spoiler). But the path to getting there is nothing more than spectacular and I wouldn't have it any other way. And, if you think you won't be surprised, breathless and left dangling, you are dead wrong. Yup, there's a cliffy at the end of this incredible book, but it's worth getting there!

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that was worth ever word put to it's pages. So, why the 4 stars, you ask? The repetitive stuff in the first few chapters of the book got on my nerves. While I loved the story, the characters and where it went, I could not get over this little issue. And I just didn't feel exactly the same pull through this book as I did with the first, tho it was close. I can't wait to see where Kagawa takes us in the final installment.

4/5 stars
