Haven't heard of THE BLACK KEY? Check it out!

Title: THE BLACK KEY (The Lone City Trilogy #3)
Author: Amy Ewing
Pub. Date: October 4, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 304
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Find it: AmazonBarnes & NobleiBooksGoodreads
For too long, Violet and the people of the outer circles of the Lone City have lived in service to the royalty of the Jewel. But now the secret society known as the Black Key is preparing to seize power.

And while Violet knows she is at the center of this rebellion, she has a more personal stake in it—her sister, Hazel, has been taken by the Duchess of the Lake. Now, after fighting so hard to escape the Jewel, Violet must do everything in her power to return to save not only Hazel, but the future of the Lone City.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Amy! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! I am dying to read THE BLACK KEY and I know all my readers are dying to as well! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about THE BLACK KEY and the characters? Or give us a series recap?

Okay, I’m going to try to be as concise as possible. In THE JEWEL, Violet is sold as a surrogate to the wealthy Duchess of the Lake, to bear her a child. In THE WHITE ROSE, she escapes and flees to a safe haven, where she learns she has much more power than she thought she did. In THE BLACK KEY, she sneaks back into the Jewel to finally confront the woman who took so much from her and attempt to take down the royalty once and for all. Whew, that was tough! I can be so bad at summarizing but I think that’s pretty much the gist of it J And we do get to meet some new characters (some have appeared in the novellas, others are brand spanking new) that I’m really excited about!

So now that the series is over what are you working on? And how does it feel to have a complete series under your belt?

It’s so bittersweet! I’m incredibly proud of this series, and so grateful that I was given so much space and time to write Violet’s story. The way she has grown and changed over the course of the three books makes my heart swell with pride. But it’s also sad that I won’t get to be with her anymore, that I won’t get to hang out with Ash or Raven or Garnet again. It’s really hard to say goodbye to them.

But in exciting news, I do have a whole new series coming out! No release date yet, though it’s looking like it will be out sometime in 2018. And I am chomping at the bit to get to work on it (it is in Baby Draft form right nowalso known as Really Really Really Bad Draft formand waiting on edits). The first book is called THE CERULEAN and it tells the story of Sera, a member of a race of magical women who live in a city in the sky. My agent called it a Sapphic utopia, which I love. The city is entirely female, gay, and polyamorousa family unit consists of three mothers and one daughter. Sera is chosen to be sacrificed onto the planet below the city, but it goes wrong and instead of dying, she is captured by two twins whose father runs a series of upscale freak shows in a city much like 1930s New York. Sera is put into his newest show and has to figure out how to escape (with the eventual help of the twins who caught her). It is a lot more complex than The Jewel and I can’t wait to share these new characters and societies with the world!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Nope! They are all their own people to me, as cheesy as that sounds. They are wholly unique.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Oooh, that’s so tough. I can’t choose one favorite. The Duchess because she’s so nuanced, Garnet because he’s such a lovable jerk, and Sil because she’s so curmudgeonly but with a soft heart underneath. Least favorite would have to be the Countess of the Stone because she is so purely evil.

What is your favorite passage/scene in THE BLACK KEY?

There’s a scene between Violet and Lucien in The Black Key that I absolutely loveI wont elaborate to avoid being spoilery. Theres lots of action in this book, and this one particular scene is quiet and reflective. Its a nice breather and a reminder of the strength of their relationship.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Most of the research for this series came in the beginning, when I was still crafting the world. I know it so well now, there wasn’t so much to be done. I did have to do more name research because there are new characters (and they must fit in with my naming systems). And we go back to the Duchess’s palace so I had to reread some parts of The Jewel to remind myself what was where!

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Again, must I only pick one?? Peeta and Jon Snow. I can’t choose between them, don’t make me!

What inspired you to write YA?

Definitely a big part was because I love reading it. And there’s so much you can do with YAthe boundaries are constantly being pushed and there’s lots of freedom to explore. But I think what I love the most is that time in life. There are so many firsts, there is the struggle to figure out how you fit into the world, the balance between leaving childhood and becoming an adult. Everything is so heightened and immediate. I would never want to live my teen years over again, but they are a great wealth to draw from.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’m currently reading an advance copy of Lexa Hillyer’s upcoming YA fantasy Spindle Fire and loving it! On my TBR is The Accident Season and The Color Purple (which I can’t believe I have not read yet).

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Ravenclaw! That’s what I sort myself into. I’ve never actually gone and done the sorting thing on Pottermore. I think I’m terrified it will put me in Slytherin and I so identify with Ravenclaw.

Twitter or Facebook?

Twitter for talking to readers, Facebook for sharing pics of my travels. I use them both so differently.

Favorite Superhero?

Rogue from X Men. I wanted to be her when I was little.

Favorite TV show?

Ack too many to choose! My most recent obsession is The Americans, so I’ll go with that. But I definitely can’t wait for the next season of Stranger Things.

Sweet or Salty?

Salty! All the way.

Any Phobias?

Heights and spiders.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

I’ve been on a 90s kick recently, and can’t stop listening to Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms.

Fall Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Rogue One! I’m such a nerd.

Thanks so much Amy for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read THE BLACK KEY!

Thank you so so much for having me!!

Violet is on the run. After the Duchess of the Lake catches Violet with Ash, the hired companion at the Palace of the Lake, Violet has no choice but to escape the Jewel or face certain death. So along with Ash and her best friend, Raven, Violet runs away from her unbearable life of servitude.

But no one said leaving the Jewel would be easy. As they make their way through the circles of the Lone City, Regimentals track their every move, and the trio barely manages to make it out unscathed and into the safe haven they were promised—a mysterious house in the Farm.

But there’s a rebellion brewing, and Violet has found herself in the middle of it. Alongside a new ally, Violet discovers her Auguries are much more powerful than she ever imagined. But is she strong enough to rise up against the Jewel and everything she has ever known?

The White Rose is a raw, captivating sequel to The Jewel that fans won’t be able to put down until the final shocking moments.

Hi Amy! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! I loved THE JEWEL and THE WHITE ROSE and am so happy that you could stop by for a visit! BTW I can’t wait for book 3!

For the readers: can you give us a recap of THE JEWEL and the characters?

Thank you so much for having me again! The Jewel is about a city where young girls are auctioned off as surrogates to royal women who can’t have children naturally on their own—the surrogates possess a sort of magic, known as the Auguries, which allows them to create healthy children out of royal embryos. Violet, our main character, is sold to the Duchess of the Lake, and moves to the center of the city, called the Jewel, which is where the royalty live. But she quickly discovers that life as a surrogate is filled with danger, abuse, humiliation, and even death. When she is offered a chance at escape by a lady-in-waiting named Lucien, she is eager for it—until she meets a young man named Ash who turns her world upside down and puts her in a very different sort of danger.

What can we expect in THE WHITE ROSE?

You can expect to see the other circles of the city that we haven’t seen yet—the Bank, the Smoke, and the Farm. And there are some fun new characters! One in particular plays a very important role in the latter half of the book and she is just my favorite. I can’t wait for everyone else to meet her. You’ll also get to learn more about the Auguries, and what their true purpose is…

What about book 3? Do we have a title yet?

We do! I even saw a cover mock-up and I am just blown away by this design team at HarperTeen. I have been instructed to keep my lips zipped for now, but I’ll be releasing the title in the next few weeks!

I know I asked this last time but who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite? Has that changed between the two books?

My favorite character to write in this book was Sil, the woman I alluded to earlier. She is so crotchety and doesn’t give a crap about offending anyone, so it was really fun to make her and Violet interact. As for my least favorite character…hm. I love everyone! There is a character who comes in late, and she’s sort of annoying. I disagreed with her stance on things. So that was challenging. It’s definitely changed since the last book, since we move to a different area with different people! Though Garnet is still fun to write. Garnet will always and forever be fun to write J

What is your favorite passage/scene in THE WHITE ROSE?

There is this one scene between Violet and her best friend Raven, the one who is being tortured and impregnated by the evil Countess of the Stone in The Jewel. I can’t say too much about it without giving stuff away, but it’s intensely emotional and really brings out the depth of their friendship. Female friendships are so important to me in books and I wanted to make sure Violet’s and Raven’s was really special. I cried when I wrote that scene and I cry almost every time I read it.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story? There’s more magic in this one so did you create your magic or did you research different kinds of magic?

I did a lot of research on the four elements, what they are related to and what they represent, though I’m not sure how much of that made it into the actual book! The magic was really the most difficult part about writing this book because it took several drafts of trying different things before I discovered exactly what it was and how it worked. Making up a magic system is HARD!

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Right now I’m reading BONE GAP by Laura Ruby and I’m loving it so far! On my TBR is THE INVENTOR’S SECRET by Andrea Cremer and WHAT YOU LEFT BEHIND by Jessica Verdi.

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend? Is it still Peeta? (We never did have that chat lol)

HA! I read the first question and was like, PEETA and then saw your follow up! Yes, Peeta still reigns supreme in my heart, although Jon Snow is giving him a run for his money…

What inspires you to keep writing YA?

I think it’s just that that period of life is so fraught. You’re trying to figure out your place in the world, straddling the line between child and adult. Everything is a first. Falling in and out of love, building and losing friendships, preparing to leave the safety of your home and head out into the world. There’s so much there to write about! And I love adding magic on top of all that J

Last time we did Lightening Round Questions. This time we’re going to do a few Would You Rather’s (Answer as many as you’d like)

Would you rather never be able to speak again or always have to say everything that is on your mind? OMG too hard, impossible choice!

Would you rather be able to read or be able to read minds (but be illiterate)? Read! I have zero interest in reading minds. That seems like a great way to feel awful about yourself and the world.
Would you rather be able to speak fluently every language in the world or be the best in the world at something of your choosing? Speak every language fluently. This would be a dream come true.
Would you rather read only one book over and over for the rest of your life or read as many as you want but never remember what they’re about? Oof. Tough. Let’s say read as many as I want but never remember, because then I could just read Harry Potter over and over and over…
Would you rather only read the first page of a book or the last page? First page.
Would you rather read 5 pages per day or 5 books per week? Five books per week! I would feel like a rockstar if I could do that.
Would you rather read only one genre forever or never read the same genre more than once? Never read the same genre more than once.
Would you rather be invisible or be able to read minds? Invisible, since I’ve made my view on mind reading clear ;)
Would you rather never use the internet again or never watch TV again? Never watch TV. I need the internet too much.
Would you rather have one wish granted today or three granted in 10 years? Three in ten years. I can be patient.

Thanks so much Amy for answering my questions! I can’t wait to read THE JEWEL 3!

About book 1:

About the Book
Title: THE JEWEL
Author: Amy Ewing
Release Date: September 2, 2014
Pages: 358
Publisher: HarperTeen
Formats: Hardcover, Paperback, eBook, audiobook
The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence... and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.
