The hall | Die Kuppelhalle

In the recent museum paintings I tried to increase the size. This view from the top of the hall in the Museum of Art History took me from April until August. I changed the composition and restretched it during the work and now it is included in the Munich Show.

Bei den letzten Museumsbildern versuchte ich mich in größeren Formaten. An dieser Ansicht, von oben in die Kuppelhalle des Kunsthistorischen Museums , malte ich von April bis August. Ich veränderte die Komposition und spannte die Leinwand dafür um. Nun ist das Bild in der Münchner Ausstellung zu sehen.

I returned to the sarcophagus which I already painted some time ago. That enigmatic smile is so stunning and I am always amazed how old these works of art are. First I painted a smaller version, then I changed the composition a little, to show the size of them. In addition there are some wip photos.

Nun kehrte ich wieder zu dem Sarkophag zurück, den ich schon vor einiger Zeit mal gemalt habe. Dieser Gesichtsausdruck, mit diesem rätselhaften Lächeln, nimmt mich immer wieder gefangen und wenn ich bedenke, wann diese Kunstwerke entstanden sind, werde ich ganz ehrfürchtig. Zuerst malte ich eine kleine Version und in der zweiten Größeren, veränderte ich die Komposition ein wenig, um den Maßstab der Figuren zu zeigen. Dazu zeige ich noch einige Zustandsfotos.

Egypt in Museum | Ägypten im Museum

Since the start of this year I was painting quite frequently in the Kunsthistorische Museum, Vienna. I did a few bigger paintings which took my some time and some smaller pieces I am going to show in this post.

Seit Anfang des neuen Jahres habe ich viel im Kunsthistorischen Museum gemalt. Ich arbeitete an einigen größeren Formaten, die naturgemäß mehr Zeit in Anspruch nehmen und an einigen kleineren Bildern, wovon hier einige zu sehen sind.

Some of the paintings I did in the museum were quite small, so I decided to do some bigger versions of the more successful compositions. It is on the one hand easier, because I have already painted the subject and on the other hand, a bigger panel requires another painterly approach.

Einige der Bilder, die ich im Museum malte waren relativ klein und so beschloß ich von den erfolgreicheren Kompositionen einige größere Versionen zu machen. Einerseits ist es einfacher, da ich das Thema schon einmal gemalt habe, jedoch andererseits verlangen größere Formate eine andere malerische Vorgehensweise.

I am still continuing the museum series and here are two more sophisticated ones. The second one is another version of this one, where I didn´t like the composition and the color mood. So I did this slightly bigger version.

Ich male weiterhin Bilder im Museum und hier sind zwei etwas aufwendigere Kompositionen. Das Zweite ist eine andere Version von diesem, in dem ich mit der Komposition und der Farbbalance nicht zufrieden war. So malte ich diese etwas größere Version.

The Draftsman and Roman Heads

The draftsman on the painting is my fellow artist Michael Ornauer, who was so kind to pose for me. It was great fun to nail down the situation as quick as possible. The Roman heads turned out too orange because I used an LED light on my easel, which produced blue light. So the whole color balance shifted. A nice effect!

Der Zeichner im Bild ist mein Kollege Michael Ornauer, der sich freundlicherweise in mein Motiv setzte. Es machte viel Spaß die Situation so schnell als möglich zu erfassen. Für das Bild mit dem Römerköpfen verwendete ich eine LED Lampe mit zu blauen Licht, welches die orange Tönung hervorrief. Somit veränderte sich die ganze Farbstimmung. Ein netter Effekt!

Some more Greeks

The first painting took me some time, because the light condition changed so much during my several visits. Now the sense of space and the rooms are becoming more interesting to me. I painted the second one pretty fast because I already had done the smaller version.

Um das erste Gemälde fertigzustellen benötigte ich einige Sitzungen, da ich immer wieder unterschiedliche Lichtsituationen zu gewärtigen hatte. Die Räume interessieren mich immer mehr. Das zweite Bild malte ich verhältnissmässig schnell, weil ich es schon kleiner angefertigt hatte.

The clerk and the shadow

The first painting is an Egyptian clerk. The day I painted this, loads of school kids were around and it is alway great fun how they react to my paintings. When they see my painting in its earliest stages they are awfully disappointed, then they return and I can sense their relief because the painting had become a bit better in their eyes.

The second painting is the shadow of a very famous greek sculpture called the Viennese Muse.

Das erste Gemälde stellt die Skulptur eines Ägyptischer Schreibers dar. Den Tag, an dem ich diese malte waren viele Schulkinder in Museum und es ist immer wieder lustig ihre Reaktionen zu bekommen. Wenn sie sehen, wie ich das Bild beginne sind sie völlig enttäuscht, dann kehren sie zurück und sind dann erleichtert, daß es doch besser geworden ist, als sie erwarteten.

Das zweite Bild ist der Schatten einer berühmten griechischen Statue, der Wiener Muse.

Today I received the permission to paint in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which is one of the mayor collections of fine arts in the world. I am totally enthusiastic about that. Underneath you see one painting I did some time ago from a photo I took during a Francis Bacon Show at the Museum.

Ich bekam heute die Genehmigung im Kunsthistorischen Museum, eine der bemerkenswertesten Sammlungen der Welt, zu malen. Ich bin völlig begeistert. Unten ist ein Gemälde zu sehen, daß ich nach einem Foto der Francis Bacon Ausstellung im Museum gemalt habe.

Two more from the museum

The gaze of that monkey struck me and I thought of capturing it. Both paintings are from the last visit to the museum some time ago.

Der Blick dieses Affen zog mich so in den Bann, daß ich versuchte dies einzufangen. Beide Gemälde sind von meinem letzten Besuch im Museum, welcher schon vor einiger Zeit war.

Michael Ornauer and I decided to go to the museum and had been confronted with loads of disturbing kids. On the photo you can see that I painted a person on that sofa which I overpainted. So I got back the other day and finished the painting with more concentration. On Michaels Blog you can see his painting of that spot.

Michael Ornauer und ich beschlossen mal wieder ins Museum zu gehen und waren dort unzähligen störenden Kindern konfrontiert. Auf dem Foto sieht man, daß ich eine Person auf das Sofa malte, die ich wieder auslöschte. So ging ich am nächsten Tag zurück, um das Bild mit mehr Konzentration fertigzumalen. Auf Michaels Blog kann man sein Bild vom gleichen Ort sehen.

There is a saying, that in a museum the time stands still. Here you can see that I paint so fast that even a photo can´t capture me when I am on duty. :-)

Two Ducks

It is very funny that almost every day when I am in the museum there are visitors from one nation who have the majority. On some it is the Spanish day on others the Asian or Italian. This time it was the day of Hungary. There were loads of Hungarian Schoolkids running past my easel, shouting and asking stupid questions. I finally gave up totally deranged.

In the past years I have done so many portraits, so this one wasn´t too difficult, except that this Ape has more hair than the average sitter. I really like its beard!
