"Run for the Cure" - mixed media scrapbook page featuring Susan K Weckesser products

Hi there!   I created this layout for my guest spot with Susan K Weckesser this month.  This month's theme is mixed-media - which I like including on my scrapbook pages, so it was a good match for me.  :)

After covering my background with gesso, I added border strips with Susan's stencil and some texture paste:

I added a little colour to the background with Inktense blocks and blended with gesso.  Then I added some stamping, including the banner from "Create Your Day", and some texture stamping with a stamp from the ABC.123.Washi set.

I wanted a little more bright colour, so I spritzed some Dylusions spray through a Want 2 Scrap stencil.

You can also spot stamps from In-Circle-Me, and Insta-Cute in these detail shots.

Thank you for visiting!

"Dreaming of Spring" - mixed media on canvas

Hello friends - long time no see! This month I returned for a visit on the Susan K Weckesser blog.   I was delighted to find that this month's theme was mixed media, as I love playing with different products and seeing how they work together.

My project started out as just a piece of raw canvas, to which I added stamps from the "At Ground Level" set.   Then I stitched over many of the lines with my sewing machine:

I added clouds from the "Create Your Day" stamp set, and some colour using Inktense pencils & water.  I also stamped some background texture using a stamp from the "Abc-123-Washi" set, and the "In Circle Me" stamp.

I decided the colours didn't 'pop' as much as I would like, so I added india inks, and a little more Inktense (but using the blocks this time):

The final steps were adding a few touches of colour with Smooch inks:

and a bit more sewing (and fraying the edges):

Here's a close-up of some of the stitching:

And the final project, again.   I was originally planning to put this on a card, but my daughter has laid claim to it, and it will be mounted in a shadowbox for her bedroom, instead.  :)

Thanks for visiting!

Home for Christmas Art Journal page - Susan k Weckesser

I wanted to share my first 'official' project as a DT member for Susan K Weckesser.   I decided to make an art journal page (partly because I had a new journal begging for some attention, and partially because Susan designs super cute stamps).

The background was made with Dylusions spray inks.  The awesomely opaque white marker is from Zig / Kuretake. I want this marker in every colour!

I made my own 'washi tape' with the washi tape stamps, by stamping on tissue paper, then tearing it and adhering like it was tape.  It's a fun way to use these stamps, and I can see me using this technique again.

I wanted to use this cute house stamp  as a collage element, so I stamped it on white cardstock, coloured it, and then cut it out and glued it to my page.  I did the same with the cloud stamp.

I used the "Splatter it" stamp and the banner from the "Create your Day" set as texture stamps in the background.   The funky letters are old-as-dirt rub-ons from Doodlebug, but they still work great!

Thanks for visiting!

Art Journal page with Faber-Castell PITT Pastels & Helmar - and a GIVEAWAY

This month the Helmar team did a cross promotion with Faber-Castell, so I got to play with some fun products and made a page for my art journal.

Using a stencil, I traced my design with a Faber-Castell PITT pen (black, superfine).  Then I coloured it with the PITT Pastel pencils, and blended with a blending stump.  Then I sprayed with Helmar Crystal Kote Fixative, to set the pastels.

I then used the large brush PITT markers and did some stamping.  These markers are awesome for stamps - just rub it over the stamp, and away you go.

Next, I adhered strips of book text, with the Helmar Decoupage:

And added some words using the PITT Brush tip and superfine tip markers:

Now, the fun part for you!  There was a bit of shipping confusion with my parcel from Faber-Castell, and I ended up getting 2 kits instead of just 1, so I'm giving away the second kit:

To win, just leave a comment on this post before next Friday morning (Aug 3). Open to everyone.  Don't forget to come back next week to see if you've won!

I did this one a little while ago, just never got around to loading it.  The background was done with acrylic paint, and the circles were added with PanPastel (the smaller ones are on grungeboard.   This was so much more vibrant until I sprayed with fixative.  (This was before I started using Helmar).

PanPastels - PanPastel
grungeboard - Tim Holtz
rubon letters - Luxe (see - old rub-ons can still be useful...)

Be Still - Art Journal page, playing with colour

I haven't shared any art journaling here for a while.  Most of my journaling is a little too personal (or there's cussing...) so I don't share all of it here, but this page was more about playing with colour and paint.  :)   I decided to try one of the colour palette challenges over at The Color Room (this is palette #113).

I may or may not have an addiction to stencils...

Supplies - um... not sure how complete this list is - not really in the habit of tracking supplies when I play with paint...
PP - Kaisercraft, Lucky 7 Factory, Hambly
acrylic paint - Decoart, Amsterdam
stamps - Unity, Tim Holtz
stencils - The Crafters Workshop, Prima, Artist Cellar, Dylusions
rub-ons - Fancy Pants, Doodlebug
flowers - Prima (finally found a use for those "got flowers" bottles, ha!)
water-soluble wax pastel - Caran d'Ache
other - office tag, pretty sure there's some Dylusions in there somewhere, random die cut papers...

"Nap Time?" - Love My Tapes, printed kraft & washi tape on chipboard

Hi everyone - sharing another layout featuring Love My Tapes washi tapes.

Little strips of washi tape make a fun border or mat for a photo, and they stuck quite well over the gesso and distress stains (I had my doubts...)

Do you still have gobs of raw chipboard in your stash like I do?   Larger shapes are super easy to cover with washi tape, giving them a whole new look.  Just peel & stick, and wrap the tape around the edges.  It has a little bit of flexibility, making this a simple job without the hassle of smoothing out a ton of wrinkles:

I really love pairing tapes with mixed media supplies.

How long have I had those chipboard paw prints and these letters?  Yikes - glad they are seeing some use though.  ;)

Thanks for visiting!

Supplies (Love My Tapes):
red argyle washi tape (#905)
black loop washi tape (#916)
blue chevron washi tape

chipboard - Basic Grey (letters, bracket), Cosmo Cricket (paw prints)
resist canvas - Prima Marketing

"Mountaineers" - scrapbook page with Pan Pastels and Helmar

Hi Everyone.  This is my first project for Helmar Adhesives.  (Visit their blog - my team mates floor me with their ideas).

I used Pan Pastels to add colour to the background.  Because I was adding multiple layers of colour, that I didn't want to mix, I needed to spray a workable fixative between layers.  Crystal Kote Fixative to the rescue.  I've been disappointed with the results from a competitor - so I was very pleased with the Helmar product - it didn't affect the colour or transparency of the pastels.  Helmar FTW!

I glued down the metal gears with 450 Quick Dry Adhesive, and used Acid Free Glue for everything else.

This is my new favorite thing: splats made with Ranger Distress Stain.  This makes me furiously happy.

My mountaineers played hooky from school to climb Mt. St-Hilaire together.  Who am I to argue? (Dude - they were going to make the kids run laps around a soccer field for most of the day - believe me, he wasn't missing much at school).

Adhesives by Helmar:

Acid Free Glue
450 Quick Dry Adhesive

stencils - The Crafters Workshop
Pan Pastels - Pan Pastels (this redundancy is redundant)

Paint and gel medium were flying all over the place...

I did this journal page while playing along with the challenges for the Lucky 7 Factory online crop last week.  They seriously got me back in my groove - thanks L7F!!

I lost track of the supplies on this fairly early on in the process...  but these are the ones I'm sure about:
acrylic paint - Amsterdam
gel medium, gesso - Liquitex
spray - Dylusions by Ranger
stencils - The Crafter's Workshop, punchinella
rub-on letters - Doodlebug (who woulda thunk it, eh?)
stamping ink - StazOn  (there are stamps in there somewhere, but God only knows what they were at this point...)
die cuts, flowers, stamps, and random crap on my desk...
...Oh, and the journal is a Canson mixed media journal.

Valentine mixed media canvas

If you stopped by the Love My Tapes booth at CHA, you might have seen this canvas.  :)

After preparing my background, I applied several designs of fabric and lace tapes in repeating stripes.  Having the self-adhesive tapes made it so easy to get everything to stay exactly where I wanted it, especially when I sealed the entire canvas with a gel medium top coat at the end.

For the dimensional hearts, I placed the fabric sheets on chipboard, then die-cut the shapes.  Sticking the fabric to the chipboard first makes sure that you will get perfect alignment - so much easier than trying to die cut them separately!

Thanks for visiting,
JJ

Supplies (Love My Tapes):
fabric tapes - Brooke (FT001), Sophie (FT003), Baylee (FT004), Madison (FT005), Sherbert Mini check (FT016)

fabric sheets - lilac polka dot (FS017), light pink reptile (FS006)

markers - Faber-Castell PITT pens
stamps - Prima, My Mind's Eye
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels

1 Product, 3 Ways - Quick Quotes Frosted Embellishments

Recently, the owner at my local scrapbook store (Scrapbook Centrale) gave me a couple of Quick Quotes Frosted Embellishments and asked me to make a couple of tags to be displayed near the product in the store. She felt that customers weren't seeing the real potential in these items, and I had to agree with her, so I took up the challenge and here are the results.

Here is what they look like in the package:

I guess even the manufacturer realized they don't photograph well, because here's the image they use in their webstore:

These are intended as one-use embellishments - you stick it to your project and away you go. Well, I'm going to +1 that. I used the 1 dragonfly I received 3 times, because that's how I roll. They are made out of a frosted plastic material similar to that you see in many masks, including the Tattered Angels glimmer screens, so you can see where this is going...

I started by removing the gems so the shape would be easier to clean afterward. I placed the dragonfly shape on my misting mat, sprayed it generously with Glimmer Mist, then flipped it over on to the white tag, using it as a stamp. I did not lift the shape - because the next thing I did, was proceed to use it as a mask, and glimmer misted the entire tag in purple mists. I lifted the mask, and allowed the tag to dry (then I washed the dragonfly embellishment, to get it ready for the next tag).

You can see in this image I added a little clear crackle paint to parts of the tag, for texture.

I coated the completed tag in Chandelier Glimmer Glam (a girl can never have too much Glam, right?). I tried to catch it in the light so you could see how much it shimmers.

Supplies (stamped tag):
frosted dragonfly - Quick Quotes
CS - Bazzill
glimmer mist, glimmer glam - Tattered Angels
clear crackle paint - Ranger
other - organza ribbon

OK - on to the next tag. I'll be honest, this one is my favorite of the bunch, and I could have stopped there (but I didn't).

I started by painting the cardstock with regular gesso, and heat dried it. Then I placed the dragonfly as a mask, and used a palette knife to layer impasto gesso over top. I pulled up the dragonfly and cleaned it well (if you let the gesso dry on the mask, you will likely never get it off).

I won't lie - this is something you'll have to let dry overnight, but it's worth it. When it was about half dry (dry to the touch, but you could tell the underneath layers weren't dry), I mashed a couple of rubber stamps into it, to create texture.

The next day, when it was completely dry, I misted it generously with 2 colours of glimmer mist (Dragonfly - of course - and Gumdrop).

When the mist was dry, I added Glimmer Glam to the dragonfly impression:

I love how this looks in the sunlight!

Supplies (mask with gesso):
frosted dragonfly - Quick Quotes
CS - Bazzill
gesso, impasto gesso - Liquitex
glimmer mist, glimmer glam - Tattered Angels
other - random rubber stamps

Here's the next one - this time I used the embellishment as an actual embellishment, ha!

For this tag I misted the cardstock with glimmer mist, and stamped with Tattered Angels texture stamps. Then I painted Glimmer Glam (in 2 colours) onto the frosted dragonfly embellishment. Now, if I had taken my time and been neat about it, there wouldn't be dried bubbles of glam. But I like that look, so I just glopped it on. (Hmm, spell check says that 'glopped' isn't a word, but I think it should be.)

I love the way the glimmer pools in the texture on the Bazzill cardstock. I adhered the dragonfly to the tag with clear adhesive foam to give it a little lift, and then re-attached the gems with glue dots.

Supplies (Dragonfly tag):
frosted dragonfly - Quick Quotes
CS - Bazzill
glimmer mist, glimmer glam, stamps - Tattered Angels
stamping ink - StazOn
baker's twine - Pink Paislee

I said 3 ways, right? Well, I lied. It's 3 + 1. Since this is a different embellishment, I'm not counting it in my original tally. So there.

I realized I hadn't shown one of the easiest ways to customize the frosted embellishments, and that is with alcohol ink (I used 3 shades of alcohol ink, plus a bronze mixative).

The gems started out clear on this flourish. I coloured them with a Copic marker to give them a warmer tone, coordinating better with the other colours on the tag. I attached the flourish with tiny staples.

Supplies (kraft tag):
frosted flourish - Quick Quotes
CS - Bazzill
alcohol ink, distress ink - Ranger
stamps, staples - Tim Holtz
marker - Copic
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels
stamping ink - StazOn
other - twine

So tell me - is this kind of post helpful/useful? Should I do this more often? I would like to know what you think!
