Is God a Tigers fan?

From Detroit-

From its outdoor electronic sign to its noon, workday service, the congregation of St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Detroit obeys the second commandment.

God "does tell us to love our neighbors as ourselves," said the Rev. Steven Kelly, rector of the 150-year-old church on Woodward, across a parking lot from Comerica Park. "And the Tigers are our next-door neighbors, and one of the ways we love them, is to pray for them."

At Tuesday's service, ahead of Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, Kelly intoned a prayer before the handful of churchgoers asking "for blessings for the Tigers that they may play to the best of their abilities and injury-free." He will put in another prayer at noon today.

But is God really a Tigers fan?

As the home team continues its quest for a place in the World Series, metro Detroiters surely hope so.

Amen?!

CHELSEA: Ministry team ordained at St. Barnabas Episcopal

From Michigan-

The congregation of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Chelsea celebrated the ordination and commissioning of their second generation ministry team on Nov. 20.

The Rev. Wendell Gibbs, the 10th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, ordained David C. Glaser and E. William Stech as priests. Nancy Scott was commissioned for pastoral care and hospitality; Kathy O'Connell was commissioned for Christian education and administration. More than 40 visiting clergy participated, and there was an estimated 190 attendees.

Jan Varady was among the presenters. She was commissioned for pastoral care more than four years ago as part of St. Barnabas' first ministry team. Her two team members, Rev. Doris Case and Rev. Myra Colvin, were ordained as priests at that time, but have both since retired.

Rev. Lew Towler of St. Andrew's in Ann Arbor and Rev. Carol Mader of St. James' in Dexter also presented at the ordination. The two have served the congregation as supply clergy numerous times and have given a great deal of support to the developing team.

Pointes Episcopal rector quits after sex allegation

From Michigan-

The rector of a Grosse Pointe Farms church has resigned after being removed because of allegations about an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman who was not a member of the parish.

Church leaders are to call an interim rector in the coming weeks and begin the search process for a new rector.

The Rev. Bradford Whitaker resigned from Christ Church Grosse Pointe effective July 17 after a complaint was made to the church, according to the office of the Rt. Rev. Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr., bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, which gave no further comment.

The church is not releasing Whitaker’s resignation letter or a letter from Gibbs, JoAnn Amicangelo, Christ Church’s director of communications, said in an e-mail Monday night.

She said the complaint of inappropriate sex with a non-church member was not criminal in nature. Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety officials have received no reports or complaints regarding Whitaker, Detective Lt. Rich Rosati said.

Gibbs temporarily removed Whitaker from his duty April 16 pending a 90-day investigation of a “serious allegation of misconduct and a violation of his ordination vows,” according to a news release from the church vestry or governing board.
