Recently, I made this exclusive variant cover for Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston's BLACK HAMMER. I had a blast doing this retro looking cover, paying homage to Kevin Maguire's iconic Justice League cover. Here you can see the idea sketch, the pencil stage, inking during two moments, the final scan and the final cover. It changed very little from sketch to final image, and mainly I changed who would have the arms crossed to better reference the Maguire cover.
Doing a Black Hammer logo with letters also similar to the Justice League logo, and adding the tagline on the top, gave this the perfect feel of something from the past of superheroes comics.
I’ll post all our San Diego schedule soon, but I’ll be signing this exclusive edition with Jeff Lemire on Friday, July 21, from 3PM to 4PM, at the Dark Horse booth.
See you there!

The Strain at DHP#28
This is the cover for Dark Horse Presents 28, out in September 25th. In one of our rare art collaborations, Bá penciled the cover, inked the top image, I inked the bottom part and he colored the whole thing. Click here to see the cover with the logo and everything else.

Liberty, Killjoys and EDITORS
Two of the recent covers I've done.
The first one is for the CBLDF's Liberty Annual 2013. The editor for this anthology changes every year and this one's Scott Allie. I did this cover and Fábio also has a little story in there. It will be out in October by Image Comics.
And also my variant cover for THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS #5, crazy mini series by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan. Edited by Sierra Hahn and published by Dark Horse, this will also be out in October.
There's a lesson to be learned here. Make friends with editors. Get to know their names, what books they edit, who they work with. If they like your work and they trust you, they'll get you cool gigs.

KILLJOYS 2
One of my most challenging occupations these days is making up variant covers for "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys", crazy new series written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon, with amazing art by Becky Cloonan, due to come out in June, after a quick appearance on FCBD in the coming weeks.
There're lots of characters, crazy places and lot's of stuff going on. It's been a pleasure being part of this adventure, being able to see where the story is going and help marking the way.
So here's my cover for the second issue, that should be out in July.

BPRD - VAMPIRE cover 4
"Plagued with two vampires trapped inside his chest, Simon Anders struggles to keep them under control before they can throw him into a bloodbath with an army of witches."
We're finishing this issue this week as we also finish the script for issue 5. It has been an incredible ride and I can't wait to see what people think of it in two weeks when the first issue comes out.
Back to the drawing board.

Look for this on November 23.
I'll have a new story on the sixth issue on the Dark Horse Presents anthology, out this month. Also, I did the cover, which looks like this:
The two new stories I did this year were for traditional anthologies. One for DHP. The other story, a three pager, I did for a traditional Argentinean anthology which now has a brazilian incarnation.

Dark Horse Presents 6
September is right across the corner and, while we're really producing several new stories, most of them are still very far away from any clear publication date, except for Casanova-AVARITIA, the new arc which starts coming out NEXT WEEK, but Bá is drawing this arc, not me. So, with that in mind, I'm doing a story for issue 6 of the new Dark Horse Presents anthology. This is the only new story I'm writing and drawing which will be published this year in the US, and it's only 8 pages long. I gave my best to make each page count.
I received the invitation to create a new story shortly after I did the variant cover for issue 2, so I can say the original inspiration for the story came from that cover - or from the idea which inspired that cover - but it went on a completely different direction. A better one, if you ask me.
I thought it was very nice of my editor to invite me to do another cover, this time for the issue my story will be in, and what I came up with is the image below:
I never forget how important Dark Horse Presents was for my brother and I, how in it we discovered Sin City and Hellboy, how in its digital rebirth a few years back I did Sugarshock with Joss Whedon (for which I got an Eisner Award) and how it still publishes and celebrates creators with a personal voice. I'm thrilled to think that in this issue my story is in there's also a new Jill Thompson story.
This issue only comes out in November, but it never hurts to give people the heads up.

Daytripper 3, DMZ 50 and a conversation
Did you buy any Vertigo Comics this week? Last week? Well, if you did, you saw the Daytripper preview (a different one from the one that went online yesterday) printed inside. But, in case you missed it, along with the preview there was a conversation with Bá and me about the book, and that conversation is now online at the Vertigo blog.
Also, the solicitations for February are online and so is our lovely cover for Daytripper 3.

WAIT! There's more.
Also on February, Vertigo will release DMZ #50, and it will be an special issue with several guest artists, including me. That's the story I'm drawing this month along with my regular Daytripper pages, and this issue of DMZ will come out the same day ad the third issue of Daytripper.
I have to get back to work. I'm very excited about this series, I'm excited about next year, I'm excited about comics in general, but I really need to lower my head a bit and focus on some pages.
Thanks for the support and patience. The wait is almost over.

Big preview of Daytripper 1
What a day.
Today, at the Vertigo blog, you can check out an extended preview of the first issue of Daytripper. The cover and the first 8 pages are there for you to enjoy, get a glimpse of our new series, and hopefully they'll leave you craving for more.
In October, while visiting our studio, Ivan Brandon read the first 5 issues and said that Daytripper "is one of the most unique and heartbreaking books you'll ever read". I hope more people feel that way.
Tonight is tango night. It's always better to tango when you feel you have something to celebrate. As we get closer to the release date of the first issue, I feel every day I should be celebrating. Working at the same time, but still finding some time to celebrate.
As I tango, I suppose the internet will provide another treat tonight: the cover for the third issue of Daytripper. I'd keep my eyes open for that one. And to finish this post with something new to show, here's a sketch I did back in August as Bá and I were still figuring out what were we doing for the cover of issue one. Bá came up with the idea of Brás (our main character) sitting in the bench with his dog, Dante (yes, I'm giving away names, but that's because they're all on the preview I linked above), and I started to play with the background image and then Bá took that thought and created the awesome first cover.

Daytripper 2 solicited!
Now that we're done with the artwork from BPRD 1947,we're only working on Daytripper. It's great to work on only one project at a time. Specially when it's your story. Your art. Your baby.
We love our baby.
Let's hope you love it too when it hits.

The Twins on the Comics Journal
There's gonna be a big, long and extensive interview with us on the next issue of The Comics Journal and we were asked to provide a new image, never before seen or published, to use on THE COVER. We did try to get something from our beloved and secret Daytripper allowed by Vertigo, but secret things are meant to stay hidden and safe. So we had no choice but to make a brand new drawing.
It will be available in June and you can pre-order it here.
Here's a nice video the guys at Fantagraphics have made:

Eisner Award nominations!!
I've been nominated for 3 Eisner Awards this year:
- Best penciler/inker
- Best cover artist(!!!!!)
- Best reprint for the big fat Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite Special Edition.
So that makes 3!
Shouts for Matt Fraction (New series), Josh Dysart (New series), James Jean (my nemesis on the covers), Dave Stewart (colors), Jill Thompson (painter), Scott and Sierra (best Anthology, inside which Fábio and I have one story each). Yeah, you too, Rantz (Anthology and Publication Design).
Mignola got 3 nominations!
Long live Cyril Pedrosa (best graphic album-new; and best writer/artist), he's soooo gooooood!
The sky will fall, for Todd Klein has not been nominated for best lettering. How long has it been?
Thanks everyone for this. I'm gonna work even harder now! I love comics!
FODA!

Finally, original art for sale!
Ever since we started working on high profile projects like Casanova, Umbrella Academy and Sugar Shock, we've been getting mail about selling original art. Since we live in Brazil and it's not an easy task to deal with shipping and money transactions, we only have done this sort of thing personally when we go to San Diego.
Well, we're very glad to announce that we have some pages available for sale with the nice folks from Beguiling, in Toronto. They have some pages and art cover from all the projects above. If we like how this goes, maybe it's the way to make everyone happy after all.
