Looks.

vernissageI think he saw me

Watercolor studies is about all I have time to do these days besides drawing our awesome new comics. It's a good break from the daily routine of the pages, and a good way to warm up as well as cool off.

layout

layout-21out2008

My page layouts are the size of a postcard, and Bá and I solve all the storytelling and design "problems" of a page right there and then.

We used to do them smaller, the size you expect a "thumbnail" to be (hence the name), but doing them slightly bigger allows us to really see the story flow and imagine the layouts as smaller versions of the page instead of doodles.

PIXU 2 is coming

This should do the trick.

With some delay, the art is done. When you read it, i hope you agree it was for the best. We self publish this thing, we do it because we love comics, we love to tell stories and we really believe in the work we do. At the end of the day, we are not a big corporation filling the monthly market of comic books, where the most important thing is to hit the scheduled slot on the comic-book shelves. At the end of the day, we do this because we love it and we want to share it with as many people as we can, and to better express our love we have to give it our best. Sometimes, our best takes more time than we anticipated, but it's something we'll be proud of. We already are.

The printer people are our pals (we have been using the same guys for three years now), so we'll try to get it done faster, so it's just a matter of time now. The hard work, the good work, the "I still can't believe I do this for a living" work, it's done.

And it's coming.

If you haven't ordered your copy, you can still do it online at Khepri.com ( click here). It's your safest bet to grab you PIXU, so hurry to get it before the PIXU gets you.

Doodling

8out2008-pencil

The drawings above were made on the actual pages of my script yesterday while Bá and I were talking with Grampá and Rafa, who were visiting (by visiting you can read "using our scanner"). These fast sketches, the kind you draw while you're talking, are good studies, and good fun. Seeing Grampá's new pages was also great fun, and following the more than 100 pages Rafa had to show was mind blowing. It's great for an artist to see other artist's works, there's a mutual inspiration, an energy that we don't get only looking at your own work. When you see greatness, you want to do great things.

Bá and I are always talking that we don't sketch often enough anymore. Simple drawings are delicious and we should fit them into our daily breaks.

Yesterday, we were on a meeting and there was paper and pencils on the table. It was just a talking kind of meeting, but I grabbed a piece of paper and started doodling. I drew the woman who were doing most of the talking, who had a big ring on her right hand, and who smoked a lot. It was cold, and her coat looked warm. For woman's standards, her hair was short.

After the meeting, I folded the piece of paper and put it in my pocket. When we came back to the studio, I saw the sketch again and decided it was okay. It felt nice to do it, because I did it for kicks.

We should all do some things just for the fun of it.

Watercolor drawing.

carcamo-29set2008

Sometimes I forget what we can draw while listening to somebody talk. Given the right tools, it's amazing how freeing these "loose" drawings are. Every artist should try it at times, in bars, in school, at conventions.

The "capture the moment" kinda drawing sometimes says more about you than about the person you're portraying.

Who will survive?

PIXU page pencil

Some times, the pencil art is almost the same as the final inking, but sometimes it's so loose, and there's so much left only for the pen, for the brush and for the cruel mistakes that we make once we're using tools we can't erase.

Who will survive the PIXU?

You can pre-order both PIXU 1 and PIXU 2 at this link here.

Finally, original art for sale!

Ever since we started working on high profile projects like Casanova, Umbrella Academy and Sugar Shock, we've been getting mail about selling original art. Since we live in Brazil and it's not an easy task to deal with shipping and money transactions, we only have done this sort of thing personally when we go to San Diego.

Well, we're very glad to announce that we have some pages available for sale with the nice folks from Beguiling, in Toronto. They have some pages and art cover from all the projects above. If we like how this goes, maybe it's the way to make everyone happy after all.

'Daytripper' on Newsarama

Daytripper

There I was, in San Diego, going to the DC booth to check with Bob Schreck what time was the Vertigo panel I was suppose to go to announce that Bá and I were doing a series for Vertigo. As I arrived, to my surprise, Bob had printed copies of the first issue of Daytripper in hand, and he was showing it to a girl. A woman, actually, but I call women girls all the time.

Turns out she was a reporter and she was asking him questions about the series, and since I turned out at that time, I was interviewed as well. Call it fate, I call it strange. It's okay, I'm used to strange. Have you met my brother?

Anyway, the article is up at newsarama, and it's the first time we (I) had to talk about what the series was about and how was it working on it. I think I did pretty good right there on the fly, and I'm sure I was a lot more nervous twenty minutes later on the Vertigo panel. Bob made me look good, though.

So, click here on the link and read alway.

Back to the drawing board.

It's coming.

Have you pre-ordered PIXU 2 already? You should. The story unfolds, the characters interact, everything comes together and the story ends. It's coming and when it arrives nothing will ever be the same.

In case you're not following us on twitter, here's the latest:

-Finishing an issue of Umbrella Academy tonight (which means inking several pages), and doing a cover tomorrow.
-Working on Daytripper script over the weekend, and going back to drawing pages during the week.
-Reading the BPRD 1947 script. Read it once already, and it's good.
-Thumbnailing the "one page a month" story we do for a brazilian magazine so we can draw it tomorrow.
- We started a weekly comic strip in one of Brazil's biggest newspapers and the first was published today.

And you know what? That's just the beginning.

Thursday, September 04, 2008

It's time to do it and it's up to you.

We'll be falling off the face of the world for a few weeks. New comics must be made, and written, and drawn, and it's up to us to do it (our part, at least). A good artist creates art and the art is a reflection of his world, and so we must live in this world and interact with people, but at the same time we must learn to respect the attention that is required to produce new work, and to pay attention, there are times when we must focus. Imagine if we lose this window of opportunity?

We love comics. To be able to draw and write comics every day is amazing. To be able to communicate with others with stories you tell is the best job in the world.

While we're at the drawing board, send your email to us and we'll answer them the best that we can, but if we don't, it's just because we're making new comics and that is what everybody wants, right? Updates will continue when we have something important to say (or to show), even if we have to twitter it.

Some important news:

-Pre-order PIXU 2

Khepri is already taking pre-orders for the conclusion of our little PIXU saga. Don't miss out on this internet bargain, and your best bet to acquire the limited edition of the second volume of this horror curse.

-Eisners:

Since we've been making the Why comics videos, we also meant to show our little participation on this year's Eisner Awards, but when we we're enthusiastically winning the award for best anthology with 5, we didn't film it. Now, more than a month later, we discovered that someone did, and we're finally able to remember what we said up there when we were already high on the happiness of it all.

It's up to all of us to make more, and make it better, and keep going.

Until we're back, behave. And let's make great comics.

The kid inside of me likes toys!

Every kid likes toys. Some of these kids like characters so much they grow up to become storytellers who will create more characters. Some of them will become comicbook creators. And all of them would love to see their characters become little toys.

As noticed on the site TOYSREVIL's I like Toys, there have been spotted at this year San Diego Comic Con prototype PVC figures of Dark Horse's UMBRELLA ACADEMY.

I've been following and aproving every step on the process of making this set and we're all very happy with the results. Soon, all of us will be able to have a litlle set on our shelves at home.

Soon, the little kid inside of me will be a very happy kid.

Thing

There are some reasons to why Bá and I are not drawing Marvel and DC super heroes. One of them is our own feeling we are not fit for it (which is strange, as I thought I wasn't fit for Casanova in the first place either).

Case in point, this drawing I made for Ivan's forum:

PIXU crew at CBR!

There's an interview with all PIXU creators at CBR. It's a nice introduction to what our new story is about, and at the same time it doesn't spoil it for those who haven't read it. There are preview pages from all four artists, like this one from Bá:

Production on the second volume continues steady and on schedule. We're a little bit late on everything else, but it's only for one more week. We can't all be drawing machines like Becky, now can we?

If you still haven't hopped on the PIXU ride, you can get your copy online at Khepri.com. Trust me, you'll want to know what happens before PIXU II arrives.

Back to work.

Back on the horror track!

SOLANO pencil new

The response for PIXU has been great and that helps us continue on the horror path we created. We were eager to be drawing again, and I think every time this happens with an artist, it shows on the first pages that come from this creative hunger. The best thing about having a working routine and a daily output of work is the constant feed we get from finishing a page, a feed that only enlarges our hunger and leaves us always wanting more.

There's nothing better.

MySpace DHP cover.

My Space Dark Horse Presents Vol. 1 will finally put on paper my Sugarshock story and it will be out in September. Before the San Diego Comicon, they were advertising the book with my first page as the cover, but I was asked to do a brand new cover for the first volume of the anthology, which they had on display at the convention.

As I just wrote earlier today, doing covers is completely different than doing comics, and you can play on a completely different set of rules.

I had fun doing this cover and I hope you like it.

Umbrella is back.

This November, The Umbrella Academy will return in another 6 issues mini-series. Bá is already drawing it, the first issue is ready and now he's taking over the cover chores. For a bigger version of the cover, click here.

The first issue is bigger and better. 32 pages of story. To celebrate the series return, the first issue will feature a variant cover as well as a regular one, and the variant's artist is no other than Jim Lee, who is a very easy going nice guy. HIs wraparound cover is this:

Doing covers is very different than drawing stories and pages, so Bá is going to try different things on the covers.

Back to work now.

Siamese

I had more fun drawing this preliminary sketches than drawing the cat on the actual story, which was just a one page story. Now I want to think of other stories, even if just as short, and make the cat appear again just so I can draw him some more.

Why comics - the preview

Today, we finished the breakdown of one issue of Daytripper. Bá is already moving on his Umbrella chapter, and we're trying to get as many PIXU pages done as we can before things get crazy once the BPRD 1947 arrives and we have to do it all at the same time.

When we're this busy, working like crazy, staying awake around the clock, we sometimes wonder "why comics?" Why do we have this need? What drives us? What drives anyone to go out there and do comics, out of all things?

We started thinking.

And then we started asking around.

There and back again.

Home. Here we are, and we're safe, and we're happy.

And busy. We've been busy for a long time. We were very busy during the convention, as we were on previous years (maybe more), and being busy is a good sign, is a sign we're working, we're building something that hopefully will stand the test of time as worth of the reader's time. We work because we feel this need to tell stories, and being busy is a way of knowing that stories are being told. This year, above all, I felt that not only stories were being told, they were being read as well.

We work our best, but the job is only done when we find our readers, when they do their part, when they get the books and read the stories. Maybe they'll like it, maybe they won't. Every year, as we work more, I think it becomes easier to find our stuff and to read our stories. Having a body of work certainly makes it easier to be seen in this sea of artists and that's something most people don't realize. Doing comics is not easy and more often than not there are no overnight successes. It takes a long time, it's a long road, and you have to love it.

We do love it.

I still can't believe we won. It's overwhelming, it's flattering, it's unbelievable and, at the same time, undeniable. I remember well that, during the ceremony, I completely forgot to thank anyone, so say anyone's name, or to express my gratitude for these awards. I was holding myself from bursting into tears, I was high of happiness, and I was pumped by my love of Comics.

From that moment on, all I could think of was how bad I wanted to do more comics, and I hope that's the effect these awards have on people: this is it, you won, now get back to work and do it better, do it harder and do it for as long as you can. No words can really say how it feels, or how it felt for me, so I just want to work an keep doing what I love, and what it seems people also love, and have the work be my way of saying thanks.

It's great to belong. It's great to have friends. Nobody is an island, we were not made to be alone, and it's great to find people who can take this great trip along with you, people who share our love for comics, people who also want to do their best, who don't settle, don't give up and they always want to do more, and do it better.

These are great friends to have and I wouldn't have it any other way.

On the plane back, I started drawing. I couldn't help it, I couldn't wait any longer and I just did it, between the first and the second movie on the second and longer leg of my trip, and it was great. It's great to draw, to create and to share. I inked the drawing when I arrived home, 'cause the plane was too shaky. I knew this drawing world need good inking, 'cause these are friends you have to treat well. They're great, and I miss them already.

We have a second PIXU to finish now, and just too much more to list at the end of this narrative, and we just can't wait to get to it. We love comics, and we thank all of you for your tenderness and support.

Daytripper

Daytripper

10 issues mini-series by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá.
VERTIGO - Spring 2009.

Umbrella interview and more from SDCC!

The Comic Con has been great and crazy at the same time. PIXU is going really well and people really like hat they see. The ones who got issue #1 can't wait to issue 2 to come out.

On a panel about the horror line at Dark Horse, they announced that "following up on this year's BPRD 1946, BPRD 1947 will be written by Mike Mignola and Josh Dysart with Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon on art. "For this story we needed two different styles of art for two different styles of scene," Scott Allie said, and indicated that the artists were big fans of BPRD".

There's an interview with Gerard about Umbrella Academy on Comicbook Resources. Click, here to read it.

OOOOHHHHHH!! And check the Wall Street Journal today, there's a big feature on Fábio and I, our carreer and lots of interviews about us and what to come. Reallly cool stuff! Read it online here.

We have a big announcement happening today. Water divider for us, that's for sure.

And the Eisners at night, which we're are very confident.
Stay tuned!

Now we have to go have breakfast with Mignola.

Original art for sale at SDCC - UMBRELLA.

Do you like The Umbrella Academy and have this inner desire to have an original page from the series? Hey, this is your chance as we'll be bringing original pages from the first series to San Diego for SDCC. We won't have EVERY SINGLE PAGE at the con, so if you have a favorite, please let us know as soon as possible, because we leave on Monday.

And if you need a reminder of how great this series was, click on the images below for bigger versions:

We all loved Dave Stewart's colors on the series because he's the best, but this pages are just phenomenal in black and white.

By each issue, the art was getting better, moodier, more graceful.

Bá loves the Kraken because he can play on the most iconic super hero themes, like being mysterious like batman or athletic like Daredevil. And the last issue was just phenomenally out of this world.

Yes, Bá will bring the original art from the TP cover.

Drop us an email if you like a particular page, or if have any questions about the artwork and, if you're going to San Diego, I'll probably see less than a week.

Original art for sale at SDCC - second call.

We're almost done finishing up all we need to do before our trip. Two or three sleepless nights and we're set to go. If you're going to San Diego and has that inner desire to buy some original art from either Casanova or Sugarshock, this is your chance, as I'm bringing the pages to SDCC.

I'm not bringing EVERY SINGLE PAGE, so if you have any particular one you'd like, let me know. If you need a hand, click on the images below for a bigger image:

Casanova
Looking at the pages again, I realize I really like the work I've done on this series.

I loved to draw this sex sequence.

The last issue has some of the best pages I've ever done. It was a very nice farewell to this characters, and I miss them as much as you all.

Sugarshock

Pages 1, 3 and 6 are real favorites of mine, and I had no idea where the story was going when I started drawing the series. I thought it would all take place on Earth, for starters.

Action! Fights! Space! Who knew I would draw that some day, with all the down-to-earth relationship stories I like to tell? I really like the way the characters move and behave throughout this series.

I'll bring all pages from issue 3 as well, and a lot more pages from Casanova, but I wanted to give you guys a taste and a reminder of the pages before you can decide to hang some art on your wall.

We'll be at the Image Island booth at SDCC, which is booth 2729, so come look for us there, and don't forget: GET PIXU WHILE YOU CAN.

Original pages at the Comic-Con - first call

So, ever since we started doing high-profile projects as Casanova and Umbrella Academy, from time to time we get emails asking if we sell original pages. Since we live in Brazil and we don't want to deal with international shipping and paypal and stuff (not right now), the only time we actually get to sell our pages is when we go to San Diego for the Comic Con International.

If you're going and you're interested, now is your chance to let us know.

Well, the convention is 2 weeks away and we will be bringing original pages to sell. Next week we'll post a page with all the pages we'll bring (yeah, it's impossible to bring a year's worth of pages of 2 monthly series).

Stay tuned.

The theatre.

Sometimes, in order to avoid losing the movement of the free hand drawing, I use reference photos on the sketches. This way, you can copy the boring angle of the picture in the sketch just to learn how that building works and to learn its details, but when you're doing the actual page, you're free from the reference photo and you can just draw like you like.

New online Umbrella

Click here and read the brand new Umbrella Academy short story "Anywhere but here".

Monday comics.

Monday, we got together with two friends, Grampá and Rafa Coutinho, and at dinner we made a fast crazy comic at eight hands on my sketchbook. One would ink the other's pencil, and then the next had to continue the previous panel.

Nothing that makes sense, but great fun.,

First panel is Grampá inked by Bá, second panel is me inked by Rafa.

Then, it's Bá inked by Grampá, and Rafa inked by me.

Now, it's Rafa inked by Grampá and Ba inked by Rafa.

Finally, Grampá inked by me and the last panel is Rafa inked by Bá.

Less than a month before San Diego, and we're all so excited.
