Just Lie There
She looked hot enough to catch fire, but too lazy to do anything but just lie there and smoke.

Back of My Head
That money. I had to keep it. Somehow. It beat like a very small drum at the back of my head. A small and very distant drum .......

Look For it
My head ached and
I needed a shave and
I was in a dead man's clothes
It's real great the things that
happen to you
You don't even have to
look for it hard

Seen Them Before
Because it was all closing in. I could tell. You recognize the landmarks, because you've seen them before, if you've been around enough. You go along trying to hold it all, gutted up and hard and ignoring it all , then one fine day it busts wide open.

A Place for Him
Ultimately parsing Brewer's republished works suggests there ia a place for him in Noir's tumultuous barroom valhalla.

Got a Feeling
It overflowed with Eucalyptus. Green grass shaved so it just tickled your ankles like an expensive deep napped carpet. And vine-covered, meandering, low roofed, alley-wayed, muted rooms, with all their views on the inside. It was trellis-fenced, scalloped, walled securely, and when you entered the front door into what was probably the front lobby, you got a feeling.

It's a Feeling
Doom. You recognize doom easily. It's a feeling and a taste, and it's black, and it's very heavy.

There's No Use
She looked slick as hell ; polished, neat and with that feminine deadliness that can drive you nuts. They work on it until they get complete control of the situation. There's no use trying to break them down. They've made it.

Down Over Your Head
Doom. You recognize doom easily. It's a feeling and a taste, and it's black and it's very heavy. It comes down over your head and wraps tentacles around you, and sinks long dirty fingernails into your heart. It has a stink of burning garbage.

Looked At Me Sideways
It was raining and snowing at the same time ; you know, just enough to make it real nasty.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There were sparkles of rain like diamonds on the dress and in her thick dark hair. She half-sat on the stool next to me, and looked at me sideways with one big brown eye.
Standing to Lose
About Eight-Thirty that night the driver of the big trailer truck let me out in the middle of nowhere. I had stacked in with a load of furniture all the way from Chicago and i should have slept too. I couldn't even close my eyes. Brother Albert had turned me down on the loan, and all i could think of was Bess holding the fort in St Pete, and us standing to lose the motel.
