Archie Shepp & Richard Davis - Live in Verona '11 [New links]

Paraphrasing the title of a song by G.Monchur III (that Shepp
has played countless times) we can say: Archie's back!
It seems that after years of weary routine, the "old lion" is
enjoying a second youth, even thanks to the most appropriate
choice of partners.
Great concert, and exiting the stage, Shepp has candidly admitted
that they forgot to play a B-Flat Blues...

Archie Shepp-Life at the Donaueschingen music festival, 1967- Saba LP , SB 15 148 st

This is for tony , who privately requested a re-up of 'One for the Trane' posted by Boromir as MP3'S a back in 2008. this is the very same record , in its original form on Saba/MPS . a real Gem by one of Archie Shepps best bands of the day , which unaccountably has never been reissued on CD outside of Japan.
What a joy to hear R.Rudd and Grachan Moncur tailgating each other and Shepp... Apparently this particular year at Donnaueschingen , was germany's real intro to the second wave of American new thing, and many in the Audience were outraged.. if you listen closely at certain points ,you'll hear a low but steady barrage of booing and jeering ...

"all of a sudden it became obvious that the battle fronts had reversed themselves under the onslaught of Free Jazz : under the impact of this music even the most serial , aleatoric and Electronic works now belonged to the the small fixed world of the establishment"
"Prof Strobel, the distinguished head of the Donaueschingen program, had specifically called for a shocking program. Well, it turned out to be such a shocker that he him self was shocked. Archie Shepps wild atacca on the Spiessburgerlichkeit and self satisfaction of the white world, with all the snobbism that goes with it-the respectably "normal"Donaueschingen audience was left limp by this outburst at the end by a three hour concert"
Joachim E.Berendt (from the liner notes)

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath with Archie Shepp en concert a Banlieues Bleues

What with the World Cup in football finale a day away, I thought it was about time to sneak in some South African music here. Another good reason is that this one was requested on a jazz-related mailing list. So therefore ...

This was the final installment of the Brotherhood of Breath, recorded at the Banlieues Bleues festival in France in 1989. The previous year had seen the release of "Country Cooking", a studio recording with many of the players on this live concert. By the late 80s, the only remaining from the original BoB was Harry Beckett, apart from McGregor, of course. A couple of tunes from that record was carried over to this cd, the title track the most obvious one.

An added delight was the appearance of Archie Shepp who contributed a couple of his own tunes and can be heard on tenor throughout the whole concert. A worthy replacement for Dudu Pukwana, one might say, though BoB without Dudu was not quite the same. The South African influence is quite strong on the first four tracks, while the latter three veers into more standard jazz territory and the penultimate one with the added treat of some Sheppian vocals culminating in a jouyous and swinging concert through and through. The first and fourth tracks features the vocals of Sonti Mndebélé, a fresh member adding a touch of sisterhood. Finally, the album features a piano very much out of tune. A pianist's curse, I suppose.

1. Sangena (Chris McGregor/Sonti Mndebélé)
2. Mayebuye (Chris McGregor)
3. Country Cooking (Chris McGregor)
4. Jikele (Traditional)

Archie Shepp / Bill Dixon Quartet

Number 10 from I Forgot Clifford. This was one of the first posts on the blog and is still rare vinyl.

This is a vinyl rip 320 mp3 from the classic Savoy LP featuring Bill Dixon on trumpet and Archie Shepp on tenor sax. This has a mainstream feel for both artists and yet has a 60s pulse as they drive through originals and Leonard Bernstein. Bass and drums by Reggie Workman, Don Moore (b) and Paul Cohen, Howard McGhee (dr) October 1962.

Archie Shepp Trio, with Woody Shaw - Live Hamburg 1977

Archie Shepp was one of the first jazz artists I listened to when I became interested nearly 40 years ago. He still remains one of my favourites, though some of his more recent recordings upon which he seems to do just about anything but play the saxophone are not to my taste.

This recording finds Shepp in prime form, along with probably the best rhythm section he ever worked with, and alongside one of the great trumpeters of the day.

Scores of artists have recorded "In A Sentimental Mood", but to my mind, none better the Shepp. It seems to be a favourite tune of his as he's included it on several recordings (or perhaps his fans demanded it). Anyway, there's a great version of it here.

Details:

Archie Shepp Trio +Special Guest: Woody Shaw
1976-May-21
Hamburg, Germany
Fabrik, 2. Jazzfestival 1977

Woody Shaw,tp
Archie Shepp,ts
Cameron Brown,b
Beaver Harris,dr

This is an audience recording I think, though the quality's very good for the day. Shepp seems to fade a little at times as he moves around the stage whilst playing.

Links in comments. Thanks to seeder for upload. Sorry I don't have a flac version.
