UPCOMING & RECENT RELEASES XVIII

May will be a good month for those who still buy records. Once again Nobusiness records will publish several exciting titles.

Obviously they have started a reissue program of archival recordings of Sam Rivers. The first volume will be a trio with Norman Connors & Cecil McBee, this trio previously has recorded the fantastic « Stream »
http://nobusinessrecords.com/emanation-sam-rivers.html

Another great reissue is this obscure session recorded by Sunny Murray in 1994 with two musicians that comes from the alternative rock. Previously published on lp in a very limited quantity (less than 30 copies), it will be reissued with more music.
http://nobusinessrecords.com/homework-sunny-murray.html

For those who appreciate Ton-Klami here is part of the band with only Midori Takada and the impressive Kang Tae Hwan only in duet
http://nobusinessrecords.com/midori-takada-kang-tae-hwan.html

Last but not least there is a reissue from a fantastic Detail session done in 1982. (Previously released on vinyl as Okhela) If you have missed the cd on FMR published almost one year ago, don’t miss this one.

From the french label Dark Tree records here is finally the first reissue of unpublished concerts by Horace Tapscott. This show happened few month before Tapscott’s death. The Pan African Peoples Arkestra is joined by the chorus of The Great Voices of UGMAA

SUNNY MURRAY "SONNY'S TIME NOW" (JIHAD, 1965)

Some hours ago there was a request for this album - I believe it is OOP.
This post contains the title "The Lie" which was for the first time released on the Japanese LP re-edition. The package included a one-sided single which wasn't part of the original Jihad LP.
The CD contains both - single + LP.
What to say else about the music - it is a classic and it should appeal to everyone who digs f.e. ESP.
Soundwise it is a bit murky and sadly the bassists are best heard in the quieter parts.
But the intensity of the music will make up for those shortcomings and Mr. Murray IS a master of the drums.

Albert Ayler, tenor saxophone
Don Cherry, trumpet

Lewis Worrell, bass

This is a great audience recording , one i often return to............He particularly liked it too.

Burton Greene-Alan Silva-Sunny Murray-Firmanence 1979

Here's another superb piano trio, the beautiful Firmanence , on the Elusive, Fore (Rare tone,Music library) label , an independent Italian label , that briefly flourished    between 1980 and 1982, with a handful of releases ranging from Bill Dixon's Considerations , posted here a few years ago , to Scelsi string quartets, and a couple of albums by Alvin Curran.

A reunion of old friends , all Had previously played and performed together in the mid to late 60's,
its a subtle, restrained largely spacious , session consisting of one free improvisation, 3 tunes by Greene ,and one by Silva..
All in all , a spirited generous record by three venerable free jazz,21st Century Masters!
still out of print , and sadly unlikely to be reissued , who knows ?one can only hope for a deluxe complete edition!

CECIL TAYLOR JAZZ UNIT "THE EARLY UNIT 1962" (INGO , 1962)

A recording from a seminal phase in Cecil Taylor's career.
The sound is really not the best - it's a bootleg!

ITARU OKI "PARIS - OHRAI" 2001

As I'm now running short of german OOP I will continue mostly with japanese recordings.
On this recording still one german musician is participating - Michel Pilz.

Itaru Oki started playing Free-Jazz in the late sixties. In 1969 he joined the experimental unit
"ESSG" of Masahiko Togashi and Masahiko Sato(h).
After he finished his first tour in Europe as member of the group "Kanno" he formed the Itaru Oki trio which later become a quartet.
In 1974 he moved to Paris where he still resides (to my knowledge)
With Noah Howard he gave a concert in Berlin and recorded "Schizophrenic Blues" for FMP in 1977.
He also founded a trio with Buschi Niebergall and Michel Pilz with whom he still plays.
With Michel Pilz he recorded at least three other recordings. "Jamabiko" to be found on the blog of your confidence:

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2008/10/michel-pilz-celeste-1978trion3901-lp.html

and "One Year - Afternoon & Evening" for FMP as well - plus later "Melu-Sina" on Drops Records.

Sunny Murray-Big Chief (EMI/Pathe Marconi 1727561)1969. FLAC

One of the surprises of my early experiences in the Blogosphere ..was finding a rip of this particular album which i'd had on tape for many years... that rip at 256 by Nonwave.. who has shared many rare gems in the last couple of years, is still available at Nothing is v2..and elsewhere.

Im pleased to be able to present a lossless rip , which i made recently on a portable zoom -box (recorded at 44100 HZ 16 BIT WAV then converted to FLAC) Straight from Iain's amplifier into the device.
tracking using this method requires precision in real time, something elusive on the day ..Swedish vodka.. and incessant music jabber doesn't do much for ones powers of concentration.
All turned out fine in the end...the music's all here..in good sound.

I've been in love with this record ever since first hearing 20 years ago (the very same pressing) a pity that it's relegated to the status of a obscure rarity, since it really is one of The masterpieces produced in Paris during Murray's early ex patriot life there..a period hailed as the Golden Age by fanatics of the Genre.

I prefer it to the better known BYG records, for a start its a better balanced recording, no filler here 'angels and devils' and 'hilarious paris' are among the great anthems in the genre... the version of Richard Rodgers 'this nearly was mine' is a riotous melee that teeters on the brink of chaos.. more 'tasteful' despite its almost over powering emotive load than any smug self knowing formulaic rendition...a great tune done thorough justice!

The great Alan Silva plays violin exclusively here..alternating spectral whimsy and frenzied dervish like prayer's.. he is magnificent, they all are .
It's a transformative experience... to the skeptics who may feel im' tugging myself a bit hard...impossible to exaggerate the impact this record has had on me personnaly check it out in all its sonic glory... clicks and all.

Its unbelievable that one of the finest records of the late 60's remains unreissued to this day
scandalous too that so much early Murray languishes on the unused dusty record shelves of collectors .

Eremite reissue is OOP!

David Murray and Sunny Murray Quintet - Live 1975

This recording comes by way of a bit torrent (thanks to original seeder), originating from an FM recording WXPN FM Philadelphia Pa Aug 21 1975. I think this was one of only two sessions that this particular line-up gigged together, though of course the two Murrays have played together many times. Both are in fine form in this set, with David sounding sometimes like Ayler, sometimes like Sonny Rollins, sometimes like Trane. There is much sensitivity in the tracks as well as some good hard blowing. I particularly like the vibes work of Khan Jamal.
