The Dominican Rosary Shrine in London, England

Many of our readers will be familiar with Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP, a Dominican priest renowned for his skill with photography, particularly of stained glass around the world. Fr. Lawrence visited metro Detroit in April, 2018 and took pictures of some of our local historic churches. He is a master of social media, and his photographs have appeared on web sites and printed media across the globe for years.

Though he remains a world traveler – at least until the recent travel restrictions – Fr. Lawrence’s main responsibility is as a priest of London, England’s Rosary Shrine / St. Dominic’s Priory, a massive church north of central London in the Chalk Farm neighborhood. With so many lovely Catholic churches offering high-quality liturgy in London, the Rosary Shrine, in large part due to its somewhat remote location, has managed to stay under the radar for tourists and locals, but Fr. Lawrence intends to change that.


First of all, Fr. Lawrence began to celebrate the Dominican Rite Low Mass in the church’s gallery of side chapels. There are 15 chapels, one each for the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary. This writer has been privileged to serve Fr. Lawrence’s Low Masses there on two occasions and can vouch that the thematic decoration of those chapels is most impressive. It is not uncommon to see faithful praying the 15 decades of the Rosary as they move from one chapel to the next.


Fr. Lawrence then started a weekly Sunday 4:00 PM Dominican Rite Missa Cantata, initially at a Side Altar. A young adults’ group formed, receptions were held after Mass, and a community gradually built, in part because there was no other Traditional Mass in London at that time of day. Also, despite London’s almost incredible abundance of Latin Masses, most High Masses around town are actually Novus Ordo Latin Masses. The Rosary Shrine offered one of the few sung Traditional Masses on a Sunday, and the only one at that time of day, filling a need.

Next up the Rosary Shrine commenced a “Future Decades” campaign to raise funds for the restoration of the church. EWTN filmed a documentary about the project, The Way of Beauty, which can be viewed here: https://rosaryshrine.co.uk/ewtns-rosary-shrine-special-feature/

The Dominican Order then named Fr. Lawrence Rector of the Rosary Shrine and “General Promoter of the Rosary”, an important title and responsibility given that the Rosary was originally given by Our Lady to St. Dominic. A Rosary Garden, where the Rosary can be prayed while walking along a mini-pilgrimage path, was built in an unused area behind the church.

Recently, the Rosary Shrine began using its impressive High Altar once again for Dominican Rite Masses. The Sunday 4:00 PM Mass was moved from a Side Altar to the High Altar to accommodate the growing congregation, and a wedding Mass was recently held at the High Altar.


During the pandemic while churches were closed, Fr. Lawrence livestreamed weekly Sunday Dominican Rite Low Masses on the Facebook page of the parish, https://www.facebook.com/RosaryShrineUK. Now that public Masses have resumed, the 4:00 PM High Masses are being livestreamed.

For a media maven such as Fr. Lawrence, the parish web site just had to receive special attention. It contains a mind-bending 3D Virtual Reality Tour in the “Visit the Shrine” section. Of course, nothing beats seeing it for yourself. We encourage you to make a pilgrimage to the Rosary Shrine on your next visit to London; it’s not far from the Belsize Park station on the subway system known as the Tube.

Fr. Wayne Epperley, C.S.Sp., RIP


Pastor of Old St. Mary’s in Detroit Fr. Wayne Epperley went to his eternal reward on Friday, July 3 at the age of 66. It was Fr. Epperley who, after 30 years of requests to his predecessors, gladly welcomed the Traditional Latin Mass, Confirmations in the Extraordinary Form, and chant workshops to this otherwise conservative church. His support for an innovative radio ad campaign has been bringing people to the TLM who never would have sought it out on their own. May his soul rest in peace.

Welcome Fr. Iwanczuk


The Archdiocese of Detroit already has one of the largest numbers of Tridentine Mass-trained celebrants of any diocese in the world, and we have just been blessed with yet another addition: Fr. Lukasz Iwanczuk, a priest of the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, has arrived to take up his new assignment as Spiritual Director of Orchard Lake’s Ss. Cyril & Methodius Seminary. Originally from Poland, Fr. Lukasz was ordained in 2015 and has celebrated Low Masses in New Jersey. After training from Extraordinary Faith he was able to take on the additional ceremonies of the Missa Cantata and has asked to be in rotation as one of the celebrants of the Oakland County Latin Mass Association’s Sunday 9:00 AM Mass at the Orchard Lake Shrine Chapel. Fr. Lukasz joins Fr. Louis Madey at Orchard Lake Seminary and Frs. Clint McDonell, Cy Whitaker, and Pieter vanRooyen at Sacred Heart Major Seminary as another faculty member at our metro Detroit seminaries who regularly offers the Extraordinary Form.

Donations Sought for Livestream Camera System

Following the success of the broadcast in Poland of this year’s Corpus Christi Mass and Procession, Orchard Lake Schools Chancellor Fr. Miroslaw Krol would like to install a permanent camera system in the Shrine Chapel to be used, among other things, to livestream the weekly Oakland County Latin Mass Association High Mass. The cost of the camera system is $18,000, and Fr. Krol has invited any who may be interested in contributing to make a check out to Orchard Lake Schools, write Shrine Chapel Camera System on the memo line, and place it in the OCLMA collection basket. Donations are, of course, tax deductible, and will not be taxed by the Archdiocese. It is worth noting that this is the first of several Tridentine-related upgrades Fr. Krol intends to make to the Shrine Chapel over the next several years; the OCLMA could not ask for a more supportive host.

New Altar Missal Stand


Every once in a while a liturgical object appears that just seems perfect for its intended duty. Most altar missal stands are either made of low quality wood or flimsy metal, too small or too large for the books they must hold, or in the case of older metal ones, tarnished or corroded. Several years ago this writer happened upon an absolutely lovely missal stand, not surprisingly at a church where everything from the lighting to the mural work is first-rate, St. Mary of the Angels in Chicago. Years later that same model of missal stand has been put back into production by, again not surprisingly, the purveyor of the highest quality church metalwork in North America, Adrian Hamers of New York. With customizable jewels in the front, solid construction, and a perfect size for Latin Mass altar missals, these stands will soon make their debut at the St. Benedict Tridentine Community and the Oakland County Latin Mass Association.

Holy Family Church Goes Ad Oriéntem Once Again


In the years following Vatican II, only one church in the Archdiocese of Detroit had the drive to continue celebrating all of their Holy Masses ad orientem: Holy Family, the Sicilian parish in downtown Detroit. Under memorable and animated pastors Fr. Noel Patacconi and Fr. John Stopponi, only the High Altar was used. In recent years under a succession of administrators, that practice had been abandoned, however with the arrival on July 1 of new administrator Fr. Paul Ward, the practice has been restored. The freestanding altar has been removed, and Masses are once again offered at the High Altar. The 9:30 AM Sunday Mass at Holy Family has long been Latin Novus Ordo, however Fr. Ward has extensive experience with the Extraordinary Form, so one can only speculate what the future will bring.

Musical Talent Hidden in Our Midst

One Sunday in 2004 at St. Michael’s Church, then the home of the Windsor Latin Mass, our usual organist cancelled at the last minute. For reasons known only to God, this writer was moved to ask his wife to go up and down the aisles, asking each member of the faithful present if he or she might be able to play the organ. With only around 30 in attendance, this was a ludicrous idea. Or was it? It turns out there was a young man present who could indeed play the organ, and he ended up doing the job very well. So well, in fact, that he eventually became the Music Director of the Windsor Tridentine Mass, the first step in what has become an illustrious career in Catholic church music. That young man was Matthew Meloche, who currently serves as Director of Music at Ss. Peter & Paul Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona.

All parties involved still get a laugh when reminiscing about this event, but it turns out the same strategy could have been used once again to fill a temporary vacancy at the Oakland County Latin Mass Association. After several weeks of the choir singing without an organist, we recently learned that OCLMA member and Sacred Heart Major Seminary Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Victor Salas happens to be an accomplished organist and used to play at a seminary in Pennsylvania. After a little arm twisting, he recently began subbing for Sunday Mass at the Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel. Even more amazing, the OCLMA has been getting two for the price of one: Victor’s daughter Adrienne has been accompanying him on the violin.

If you happen to have (unknown) music talent, by all means ask to audition for the choir at your Latin Mass site. Perhaps your gift could be put to good use in the service of the Lord.

Priest Training in Saginaw


Congratulations to Fr. Christopher Coman of the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan, who celebrated his first Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form on Tuesday, January 14, after training from Extraordinary Faith. Fr. Christopher has been invited by the diocese to be one of the priests to serve a new Latin Mass Community being formed, the first in the diocese. Local faithful are delighted that their many years of prayer and hard work to establish a TLM site are finally coming to fruition.

Episode 17 of Extraordinary Faith – London Part 3 of 4 – is now available for viewing on the Extraordinary Faith channel on YouTube and Vimeo. We’ll take you to St. James Spanish Place [pictured], an historic church in London’s embassy district known as a home for traditional Catholic worship. We’ll listen to St. James’ renowned professional choir and learn about London’s thriving sacred music scene from its young music director. We’ll talk with the chairman of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, the largest organization in the world dedicated to promoting the Extraordinary Form. We’ll journey south of the Thames River to St. George’s Cathedral, where a girls’ choir has embraced the classical Latin repertoire. And we’ll meet the convert priest who heads the Anglican Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, a quasi-diocese which serves Anglicans who join the Roman Catholic Church.

Interesting Chancery Perspective

An official from a chancery somewhere in the United States recently held a meeting with this writer with an interesting premise: He stated that his diocese has come to the realization that over the next few decades there will be a slow decline of attendance at the Ordinary Form, while the Traditional Mass will experience slow but steady growth, and his diocese wants to be prepared for this shift. It plans to devote an increasing amount of resources to educating, supporting, and promoting traditional liturgy. The official gave permission for us to report this, but not to identify the diocese. Hopefully we will see other dioceses embrace this evolution with a similar positive outlook.

Extraordinary Form Confirmations in 2020

Once again this year, Detroit’s Old St. Mary’s Church, in cooperation with the Oakland County Latin Mass Association, is planning to hold Confirmations in the Extraordinary Form. The Sacrament of Confirmation is open to children as well as adults. Candidate adults and parents of candidate children are requested to register in one of two ways:

OCLMA members should speak with Msgr. Browne after Mass at the Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel, as well as e-mail info@oclma.org with the names of the candidates.

Those who do not attend the OCLMA should call Randy Bowers at Old St. Mary’s to register at (313) 961-8711. The parish may request you to speak with their pastor, Fr. Epperley.

The date of the ceremony will be determined by the availability of Bishop Donald Hanchon and will be set once a list of candidates has been assembled.

It should be noted that the St. Benedict Tridentine Community will not be arranging Confirmations in Windsor this year, so this provides a nearby opportunity for St. Benedict members to receive the sacrament.

Our Lady of the Rosary to Host First Traditional Mass


On Saturday, December 7 at 7:00 PM, Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Woodward in Midtown Detroit will host its first Traditional Latin High Mass. Fr. Derik Peterman will be the celebrant, and a reception for young adults age 18-35 will follow, organized by Juventútem Michigan. As always, those of all ages are invited to the Mass, which because of its time will satisfy the Sunday obligation.

Our Lady of the Rosary was originally built as an Episcopal church. Many decades after the Catholics took it over, it became the home of Detroit’s Oratory of St. Philip Neri in formation. Sister oratories such as those in London, Oxford, and Birmingham, England, and Toronto, Canada, are famed for their devotion to the Traditional Mass, so it is only fitting that our local one join that august company.

Debut of Hani Sarweh’s Mass Setting


Shortly before he passed away, St. Benedict and OCLMA choir member Hani Sarweh composed a Mass of St. Michael the Archangel in E Minor. On Sunday, December 8 at the 2:00 PM High Mass at St. Alphonsus Church in Windsor, the St. Benedict Tridentine Community Choir will debut the piece. Hani’s brother Wassim will direct the choir, and his brother Basel will travel from Texas to sing.

This week San Francisco’s Benedict XVI Institute of Sacred Music got word of this event and publicized it on their Facebook page. They see it as part of a burst of newly composed Mass settings that have debuted across the globe in recent months.

Side Altar Restoration at Our Lady of the Scapular


Longtime readers of this column are quite familiar with the talents of local church restoration expert Fr. Mark Borkowski. Responsible for restoration work at Sweetest Heart of Mary, St. Josaphat, and St. Joseph Churches in Detroit, Fr. Mark began a gradual restoration of Wyandotte’s Our Lady of the Scapular six years ago. This month he completed restoration and gold leaf work on the church’s two Side Altars, which now glisten with beauty. Our Lady of the Scapular holds a Tridentine Mass approximately once per month on a major Feast Day.

On Sunday, November 24 at a reception following the 9:45 AM High Mass of the Oakland County Latin Mass Association at the Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel, OCLMA member and Sacred Heart Major Seminary Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Victor Salas will give a presentation on Thomas Aquinas: A Model of the Theologian in Turbulent Times.

St. Benedict Tridentine Choir to Perform at St. Vincent de Paul Choir Concert


For the second year in a row, the St. Benedict Tridentine Community Choir has been invited to participate in a concert of local Catholic choirs being held at Windsor’s St. Alphonsus Church this Friday, November 15 at 7:00 PM. The event benefits the local chapter of St. Vincent de Paul, which operates a well-utilized food pantry for the poor at St. Alphonsus Church. These sorts of events help expose elements of the Traditional Mass to a wider audience who might not otherwise experience our liturgies.

The Monastère Saint-Benoît

The Monastère Saint-Benoît (in English: St. Benedict Monastery) in the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon, France has attained quite a reputation in the few years of its existence. An English-speaking institution devoted to the Traditional Liturgy, the monastery was co-founded by liturgical scholar Dom Alcuin Reid, who serves as its Prior, and Bishop Dominique Rey. It has attracted vocations, served as the base of operations for the Sacra Liturgía conferences, hosted the Sacra Liturgía Summer School, and in the process, outgrown its original shared quarters. It is yet another example of how religious communities devoted to the Tridentine Mass flourish.

The monastery has been given the opportunity to purchase a former Commandery of the Knights Templar, the 11th century Chapel of Saint-Christophe [pictured], located in its current diocese, as its new home. While spacious and well-suited to both the religious and hospitality needs of the monks, the property has been in private hands since the French Revolution and is in need of extensive restoration and renovation. The cost to purchase the property is €855,000, and initial renovations are expected to cost €400,000. A U.S. foundation has been set up to accept tax-deductible donations towards this acquisition, which may be made through the monastery’s Facebook page and PayPal account.

September 15, 2019 – Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Solemn High Masses at St. Mary of Redford

The Franciscans of the Holy Spirit have scheduled three Solemn High Tridentine Masses (with Deacon and Subdeacon) at St. Mary of Redford Church as part of a Novena for the Return of Fallen Away Catholics. The Novena runs from Sunday, September 29 through Monday, October 7. The Holy Rosary, novena prayers, and veneration of relics of St. Therese, St. Francis, and St. Faustina will follow the Mass. The schedule for the three Traditional Masses is as follows:

• Sunday, September 29 at 6:00 PM (Dedication of St. Michael the Archangel)
• Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 PM (St. Therese of Lisieux, Virgin)
• Sunday, October 6 at 6:00 PM (External Solemnity of Our Lady of the Rosary)

Men’s Discussion Group at St. Mary of Redford

Along with the above Latin Masses, a men’s group is being formed at St. Mary of Redford which will discuss the Franciscan Masters of Prayer. Details from Fr. Athanasius: The Franciscan tradition is unique in that many of our most popular devotions were either developed by Franciscans or popularized by Franciscans (ie. Stations of the Cross, the Angelus, devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Sacred Heart devotion) as well as devotional practices like pilgrimages and hermitages.

There are many people who ‘mastered’ the spiritual life in the Franciscan tradition. Some are very popular: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Bonaventure, St. Clare of Assisi, St. Padre Pio, St. Maximillian Kolbe, Blessed Solanus Casey; others are more obscure: Blessed Giles, David of Augsburg, St. Margaret of Cortona, Blessed Angela Foligno). But these Franciscan Masters of Prayer are tremendous examples and teachers for us as we try to live the Gospel and imitate our Lord Jesus Christ.

Here’s the plan: 

Where: Greyfriars House of Studies (the friary attached to St. Mary of Redford Catholic Church in Detroit: 14601 Mansfield Street, Detroit).
When: Thursdays 6:30 (you can come early at 6:15 for Compline with the friars). Beginning September 19th.
Who: Men. You are invited and can bring friends. Boys in High school can also attend with you as their guardian.
  What:

• Compline (Night Prayer) in the Church for those who come early
  
• Each week I (or another friar) will present for approx 30 mins on a Franciscan Master of Prayer. 
• a primary text will be provided ahead of time for you to read over if you'd like
  
• Questions and Discussion will follow the presentation (approx. 30mins)
  
• Fellowship

This semester we will focus on St. Francis of Assisi and his experiences in prayer, also how he taught his brothers to pray.

The Rite of Betrothal – Part 1 of 3


The Traditional Roman Ritual provides two sister ceremonies that are not often seen, which complement two of the Sacraments: The first is the Churching of Women, a blessing of a new mother which can accompany or follow the Sacrament of Baptism. The second is the Rite of Betrothal, a formalization of the engagement of a couple who intend to be married. Recently a young couple well-known to many readers of this column, Laura Hurajt, who sings alto in the choirs at St. Benedict and Old St. Mary’s, and Matthew Charbonneau, an altar server at St. Benedict and Old St. Mary’s, chose to mark their upcoming nuptials with the Rite of Betrothal following Sunday Mass at St. Alphonsus Church in Windsor. Extraordinary Faith Episode 22 – Pittsburgh Part 2 of 2 to Debut on EWTN on Saturday, August 10

EWTN premieres another new episode of Extraordinary Faith this week: Next Saturday, August 10, at 4:30 AM U.S. Eastern time, EWTN will debut Episode 22 – Pittsburgh Part 2 of 2.

For many years the largest Traditional Mass Community in the United States was Pittsburgh’s St. John XXIII Parish. With over 1,000 faithful attending Mass on Sunday, the group traced much of its success to a creative advertising campaign in the 1990s, involving radio ads, billboards, and signs on the sides of city buses. One of the organizers of that ad campaign, Bill Redic, tells us the history and thinking behind this creative use of publicity. Bill also tells us about the altar server training tape produced by the community that became known for its uniquely Pittsburgh-ian pronunciation of the Latin responses.




Pastor at the time of filming Fr. James Dolan provides more background on the St. John XXIII Parish and its then home, historic St. Boniface Church. Located on a hillside near downtown, St. Boniface was once threatened with demolition because of freeway construction but managed to survive.


A hidden gem in Pittsburgh, St. Anthony’s Chapel contains one of the largest collections of relics of Saints outside of Rome. Chapel docent Carole Brueckner gives us a tour and explains how the institution grew out of one priest’s personal collection of relics.


Previous pastor of St. John XXIII Fr. Kenneth Myers is well known for a talk he presents, A New Look at the Old Mass. As part of our ongoing series in which priests explain the Extraordinary Form, Fr. Myers shares his experience with what makes the Traditional Mass appealing and different.

July 14, 2019 – Fifth Sunday After Pentecost

First Traditional Mass Held at Solanus Center on July 13


Readers will be delighted to learn that the first Tridentine Mass in almost 50 years was held at Detroit’s Solanus Casey Center, a.k.a. the Capuchins’ St. Bonaventure Monastery, on Saturday, July 13. It was a Low Mass offered for the Young Adults group which the monastery sponsors, and co-organized by an enthusiastic young Capuchin, Brother Joseph. The Mass was held in the Friars’ Chapel, the smaller chapel behind the High Altar of the main chapel, where Fr. Solanus was known to spend much time in Adoration and prayer. Further details about the Mass were not available at press time. We hope and pray that the Capuchins will permit additional Traditional Masses, the very form of Mass that Blessed Fr. Solanus knew and celebrated.

Extraordinary Faith Episode 19 – New York Part 1 of 2 to Debut on EWTN on Saturday, July 20

EWTN continues to debut new episodes of Extraordinary Faith weekly: Next Saturday, July 20, at 4:30 AM U.S. Eastern time, EWTN will premiere Episode 19 – New York City Part 1 of 2. This episode was filmed at the Sacra Liturgía Conference which took place in Manhattan in 2015.

The episode opens with an interview with one of the most widely known advocates of traditional liturgy of our time, Raymond Cardinal Burke, who was the celebrant of the conference’s Pontifical Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form. His Eminence discusses at length the significance of the faithful having solemn and reverent liturgy available, and the fruits that it brings to Catholic life.


Most of the liturgies for the conference were held at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Then-pastor Fr. Jordan Kelly, OP gives us a tour of the church and tells us about the significant Dominican presence in New York City at St. Catherine and its sister church, St. Vincent Ferrer, and in health care ministry.


One of the speakers at the conference, Dr. Margaret Hughes, at the time Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the College of Mount St. Vincent, explains how beauty in religion can educate and attract people to the Faith.

Arguably one of the greatest living scholars of the Sacred Liturgy of our time is Dom Alcuin Reid, Prior of the Monastère Saint- Benoît in France and organizer of the Sacra Liturgía conferences. From his authorship of numerous books, to his role as editor of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described, the penultimate reference book for the rubrics of the Traditional Latin Mass, Dom Alcuin is the globally acknowledged go-to person for both historical and practical questions about all forms of liturgy. He tells us the reasons for founding the conference series, as well as some background about Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Robert Cardinal Sarah’s statements in support of solemn worship.

Extraordinary Faith Episode 17 – London Part 3 of 4 to Debut on EWTN on Saturday, July 6

EWTN has scheduled another batch of new episodes of Extraordinary Faith for airing over the next several weeks. Episode 17 is the third of four filmed in London, England, which this column has many times explained is a sort of Catholic liturgical paradise. Extraordinary Faith Episode 17 debuts on EWTN this Saturday, July 6 at 4:30 AM U.S. Eastern time.

The two previous London episodes showcased two of the prominent boys’ choirs in the city, the Westminster Cathedral Choir School and the Schola Cantorum of the London Oratory School. London has not neglected young ladies, however; indeed, across the Thames River, St. George’s Cathedral in Southwark has a girls’ choir, comprised largely of young ladies from immigrant families, who have learned to sing the classical Latin repertoire. Even more impressive, because the choir director at the time of filming, Norman Harper, must play the organ accompaniment, he delegates the actual conducting of the choir to one of his more accomplished students. St. George’s experience proves that young singers not only can sing difficult material but they actually embrace the challenge.

The Tridentine Mass scene in England is so busy that there are not one but two organizations devoted to organizing and promoting Latin Liturgy. The first and larger of the two is the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, which boasts its own office with full-time staff members in the Covent Garden theatre district of London. LMS Chairman Dr. Joseph Shaw tells us about the history and achievements of the LMS.

England is, of course, headquarters of the Anglican Church. England’s enthusiastic embrace of traditional Catholic liturgy, as well as the truths and beauty of our Faith, have not gone unnoticed by Anglicans. Msgr. Keith Newton, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, explains the origins and purpose of the Ordinariate in welcoming Anglican convert clergy and faithful to the Catholic Church, including offering its own distinctive Anglican-like liturgy, depicted below at the Ordinariate’s Our Lady of the Assumption & St. Gregory Church.

One of the most accomplished adult choirs in the world is that of St. James Spanish Place Church. Its young music director Iestyn Evans tells us how this parish in the embassy district of London has been able to attract top local professional singers to its Latin-centric music program. St. James is known both for solemn Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form Masses and regularly serves as the site for EF Confirmations in London.
