Barrel Roll!

I'm taking a "freebie" today for NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month).  I realized a couple of days ago that the sinus infection I picked up a couple of weeks ago has now morphed into bronchitis which is why I'm feeling fatigued and have been wheezy off and on. I'm getting better, but I have many ideas for posts that I've neglected to write this past year that hopefully I'll get up on here.  At the least, I'll hopefully get to archiving some of the projects I've made this weekend.
Meanwhile, I leave you the following thoughts about yesterday:
Just try it.  I dare you, if you haven't yet!

Smart Viral?

Okay, there's a "Smart Water" viral video with Jennifer Aniston that's been going around the past couple of days.  I've embedded the video below:

Okay, now that you've seen it, what do you think?  Some people love this video and that's cool.  Personally, I'm lukewarm about this viral video but maybe it's because I read this condemning post from "The Daily What" before I sat down and watched it yesterday.

Here's the meat of the "Daily What's" opinion:
From self-describing itself as “viral,” through its glib, Revenge of the Nerds-esque portrayal of “Internet boys,” to its employment of memes that are quite literally as old as the Internet, this video was clearly produced by people who not only lack a basic familiarity with Internet culture, but appear to be openly disdainful of the Internet and anyone who uses it.

While I don't quite feel that the people who produced the video are openly disdainful of internet culture, the video falls a little flat for me.

Anyway, I'm a little surprised about the variety of reactions from the video above.  If you feel so inclined, let us know how you feel about the video.  If you love it, that's okay.

7 things about me: Christmas Joy Edition

No Surf tagged me for one of those memes.

1. I fall in love at least once a day. Sometimes it’s a guy on the metro, or it’s a skirt or piece of clothing someone is wearing, a piece of fruit I’m eating, a picture I see, a piece of artwork or even a chocolate chip cookie. I pity my future husband, because I sometimes wonder if monogamy can work for me. Well, I might share my cookie, but only if it doesn’t have oatmeal in it.

2. Cardinals scare me. Oh, they are gorgeous birds, and I like looking at them when they are in a tree, but I’m still not comfortable with seeing a little red streak coming towards me when I walk out of my house. A pair of cardinals live in our neighborhood part of the year, and the male liked our yard in the mornings. He and I would startle each other at least two or three times a week. On top of that, one of my co-workers has a plastic cardinal that squawks when you walk by the bird in their office. Even though I know the cardinal is there, it still unnerves me. Creepy Cardinals.

3. When I was a little kid (like four or five) I thought conifer trees shed their leaves just like deciduous trees. The reason is that the trees up on the Ashley Forest above where we lived were going through a massive bug kill and a good percentage of the trees were dying about the time I was four and five.

4. My first birthday cake was a fruit cake. My parents were traveling and at my mom’s aunt’s house for my birthday. No one made me a cake, so someone stuck a candle in a fruit cake and the family sang to me. The funny thing about this is I only learned about it a few years ago because my mom was mortified the family did this. The story still makes me laugh.

5. I have a hard time not laughing when someone asks me, “so do you get more or less gifts since you were born on Christmas? Or “does it suck being born on Christmas?” Um, I was never born another day, and I haven’t tallied up the difference between the number of gifts my siblings or friends got compared to me. I still get asked these questions, and I can’t help but thinking, ‘um, I’m an adult, there’s more important things than getting gifts for Christmas.’ Okay, maybe not. Viva Ludi-Christmas (30 Rock Reference).

6. I really wonder about my taste when I shop for souvenirs on vacation. Some of the things I buy while out of country? So very, very tacky. So horrendous, I can’t exactly give them away except to Goodwill. I should probably work on that.

7. If I were to get a tattoo, I now know what it would look like. No, it wouldn't be a drawing of Bob Dylan, it would be something like this. Isn't this the coolest tattoo ever? Okay, even if you haven't seen my souvenirs I've purchased in the last couple of trips, you're probably seriously wondering about my taste. That's alright. Still the coolest tag.

Alright, I tag.....you or someone like you. I also apologize if I seem a little punchy in this post. I've had a steady diet of sugar and caffeine this afternoon.

Darwin Keith or Keith Darwin (..andI failed the Nascar test)

Joyce Darwin (That's pretty sweet)

10. MY TV WEATHER ANCHOR NAME: (Your 5th grade teacher’s last name, a major city that starts with the same letter),

7 weird things about me

Nosurf tagged me last week and I haven't gotten around to post yet. Here's my list:

7) I can't close my left eye by itself. My mom and brother have the same problem, but my mom who is left handed can't close her left eye. My brother who is right eyed, can't close his right eyed. I'm right handed, and yet I can't close my left eye.

6) I can't sleep without socks. True story. I try in the summer, and I end up tossing and turning all night. One of the first things I pack when I go somewhere overnight (no matter the season) is a pair of socks to sleep This quirk started when I was 18 and went night skiing wearing only a thin pair of socks...and my feet hurt a month afterwards, and I've had problems keeping them warm since.

5) I have never liked Tom Petty. As a little kid when he came out and all the other little kids were singing, "free-fallin"...I thought he sucked. Odd considering the music I listen to the most.

4) I've never been to New Mexico.

3) My right thumb is swollen to an inch of its life right now from deseeding and cutting up jalapeños. True story. (written on Saturday) Now, the thumb is still tender, but thanks to epsom salts (and not to my mom's suggestion of lancing it) I don't yelp when I bang it against something. You'd be surprised how much you bang your thumb through the course of a day.

2) I came down with the chicken pox when I was 12 at girls camp. I still have a small scar on my face.

1) I never took dance lessons as a kid. I kind of wish I could've taken tap, but I was too busy playing sports, and piano etc.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006.
I didn't necessarily learn these in 2006 but there's three that are my core life philosophy:
"Happiness is a personal choice, brought about by little choices you make every day"
"Just because someone does something mean to you, doesn't mean that I have the right to be mean back"
"The sadder I am, the happier I'll be if I don't mope but go see if I can help someone else out."

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

"Gonna forget about myself for a while, gonna go out and see what others need"

I don't want to fake you out,
Take or shake or forsake you out,
I ain't lookin' for you to feel like me,
See like me or be like me.
All I really want to do
Is, be friends with you.
---Dylan

I used to be involved, and I felt like a king
Now I've lost it all and I don't feel a thing
I may never grow old, I may never give in
And I'll blame this world that I live in
I visit hell on a daily basis
I see the sadness in all your faces
I've got friends who have married
And their lives seem complete
Here I am still stumbling down a darkened street

And I act like a child and I'm insecure
And I'm filled with doubt and I'm immature
Sometimes it creeps up on me and before I know it
I'm lost at sea But no matter how far I row
I always find my way back home
But I don't know what I've been waiting for
But I know that I don't wanna wait anymore
--Brendan Benson

Christmas....

I noticed this meme on a few friends blog and finally got around to doing it today. Enjoy. or not.

1. eggnog or hot chocolate?
For day to day, I drink herbal tea, I drink hot chocolate maybe a couple of times a month, but I like flavored hot chocolate better than plain hot chocolate. I really like chocolate with cinnamon, and in Mexico we had hot chocolate with cornmeal, cinnamon and chile pepper. To die for.
2. does santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree? He did both growing up.
3. colored lights on the tree, or white? I like both. white looks nice, but you see it everywhere and I like colored too.
4. do you hang mistletoe? no, I never have but I'm not opposed to it.
5. when do you put your decorations up? right after Thanksgiving.
6. what is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? fondue, cheeseballs, seafood.
7. what's a favorite holiday memory from your childhood? going sledding the day before christmas at the golf course. Sick on Christmas. that happened quite a bit.
8. when and how did you learn the truth about santa? I think I was 7-9. I believe I started questioning Santa.
9. do you open a gift on christmas eve? Just one.
10. how do you decorate your christmas tree? I don't have a tree here in VA.
11. snow! love it or dread it? love it.
12. can you ice skate? Yeah. its not hard to do. I didn't ice skate hardly as a kid, but I don't really remember learning. I'm not that great, but I can do it.
13. do you remember your favorite gift? I have some fave memories.
14. what's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Family and putting it all in perspective. I'm a christmas baby, so I guess those of us born right around the holidays have a little different view of the christmas season. Personally, I like being Christmas Joy.
15. what is your favorite holiday dessert? Well, when my bros were in highschool, my mom didn't keep dessert around during the holidays because they were trying to keep their weight down (they wrestled) and my Dad is a diabetic who adores chocolate like few men do. One year, my mom made me (or gave me) my own chocolates for me to put away to nibble on. that was nice. I like chocolate "with stuff" but I don't like it on its own (I like fudge though). BYU recipe cherry chews, cherry chocolates, coconut lemon bars, angel food cake etc.
16. what is your favorite holiday tradition? We read the christmas story from Luke the night before. We also have a nice dinner on Christmas Eve and New Years.
17. what tops your tree? I think my parents have a star.
18. which do you prefer - giving or reciving? , but receiving is fun too. The "true spirit of christmas" is awesome.
19. what is your favorite christmas song? Not Joy to the World. I really like almost all of them. I was listening to Willie Nelson sing Away in the Manger before church on sunday. That was nice. I really like the original version of "Have yourself a merry christmas" as sung by Judy Garland. Nat King Cole of course.
20. candy canes! yuck or yum? Fo sho'. I like candy canes, especially when my throat is a little sore.

5 Things You may or may not know about me

Thank you for tagging me for this one. I've been procastinating it, but here goes:

1) I can't close my left eye voluntarily. I can blink, but I don't have any control of just my left eye. Over the years, this has been more of a joke, but kind of a pain. I know its genetic, my younger brother and mom have the same problem (I should ask my cousins if any of them have this problem). The difference between me and them is, I'm right handed and can't close my left eye. My brother is right handed and can't close his right eye. My mom is left handed and can't close her left eye. So, I'm the one that has had to learn certain things left handed (i do some things just as well left handed as i do right, so it isn't a real problem) but when people notice it over the years, its kind of funny. Yes, I shoot a rifle with or without a scope left handed.

Video Evidence

2) I really like old movies....and when I say really like, it means I've read biographies, and have seen many, many old movies. Not just the standards, some of my favorites are movies that were on AMC years ago and aren't even in dvd or vhs.

3) I was a spelling bee champ. In fourth grade (the spelling bee is 4th through 8th) I took 2nd place, I believe at the school spelling bee and made it half way through the district spelling bee. In 5th grade, I took 1st place at the school and 2nd in the district, losing to the girl who won the state spelling bee and went to the national bee. I lost on the word pyramid.....some how. Anyway, I practiced several hours each day after school with my parents and was a brat about it sometimes, but they stuck with me. Being the alternate at the state spelling book, I remember getting that book and being glad I probably didn't have to compete at that level. In 6th grade, I started playing basketball (I hadn't played basketball before), and didn't spend the time studying. I think I was a semifinalist in the district bee that year.

4) My Uncle is the UVSC rodeo coach. He also was a pro cowboy for 10 years, and according to Sports Illustrated, he's one of the top pro atheletes the state of Utah has produced. Here's a photo.

5) When I was four years old, my pediatrician declared to my mother that I was going to be obese all my life. My mom, being a registered dietician was angry at this pronouncement, my dad knew that his kids would be playing sports...Now, its a family joke.
