Idle thoughts on progress

Picked up from... doesn't matter.

If you own a smartphone you will know what it is about:

The pinnacle of the user friendly interface in the past were two identical buttons, where the first launched the ICBMs and the second started the coffeemaker. The designers went further - now it is one button: to launch the ICBMs, you press and hold the button for about a second; to start the coffee going, press and hold less than a second...
And:
When I was a kid, I was waiting for the TV tube to warm up. These days I am waiting for the TV's operating system to load. Where is the progress?
Control/S to save now...

Bond denied for ex-cop who allegedly shot texting dad at movies

Leaving aside the "allegedly", let me see who throws the first stone at the ex-cop who figures in this story.

There is that saying (in Texas, I believe): this man needs killing...

A good question

Actually, an excellent one:

Everyone who has heard of Sabra and Shatila has heard of Ariel Sharon in relation to it. But how many people do you think know the names of the Phalangist leaders who actually commanded, led and carried out the massacre?

Do you know their names?

Chomsky the Mastermind: where only the eagles dare

Noam Chomsky, the Master Mind (MM) of the Century, gave another amazing interview. The subject this time is the Arab Spring, one of the multitude of subjects with which our hero is intimately familiar (in fact, there are no subjects outside his infinite competence*). What can I say: even if I wanted to, there is nothing, absolutely nothing to sink my fangs in, so free of content is the whole. Possibly with the exception of a long tirade on much hated Zionist Entity, where he produced a veritable broadside (only partially quoted here):
...Palestine, where negotiations are underway conforming to the two essential US-Israeli preconditions: that there be no barrier to expansion of the illegal settlements (sic!), and that the negotiations be run by the US, which is a participant in the conflict (on the side of Israel) and has been blocking the overwhelming international consensus...
Now, after you got some air back into your lungs after that eruption of wisdom, go ahead and ask me what does the Arab Spring have to do with the Israeli/Palestinian negotiations. I bet you expect me to know... nah.

As for the rest of the interview: there is nothing more, aside of "blame US-UK for everything". The only way to deal with the whole lot of generic drivel is to find shelter behind some poetic imagery. So what I offer is an image of a great soaring eagle. One that soars so high that no tiny boring details of our day-to-day love, misery and/or happiness, nor any pedestrian facts can bother the majestic creature in its contemplation of... of the whole, you know - the life, the universe etc.

Oh, and one more poetic detail: the bird is somewhat blind, so the details escape its attention anyhow. Too bad for the details, after all. Because nothing in the manner of mere facts of our mundane existence should reach the bird and interfere with its thought process.

And we can't complain that we don't receive any communications from this uber-eagle. Because, after all, the bird poops, you know...

(*) Re the infinite competence: the man who knows so much about the Middle East in general and Arab Spring in particular is the same one that gave another, much more hilarious interview in 2005, to an Egyptian blogger, Karim Elsahy (whose blog is long defunct, to my sorrow). To ensure we are all synchronized here, (C) means Chomsky:
(C) I mean the level of religious fundamentalism in the United States is beyond any country I know.
In Egypt for example, is there a problem about teaching evolution in schools?

(E) I don’t believe it is actually taught in government schools.

(C) I am surprised to hear that.
But it wasn't the only pearl of wisdom from Noam the Mastermind's, there was more, like this:
What will happen in Egypt depends on the Egyptian phenomenon, and tendency. I don’t see any inherent reason why the Muslim Brotherhood couldn’t be part of the majority part of the democratic culture. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. But that for Egypt to work out.
Indeed. Say no more, say no more. Please...

You were saying?

OK, if you really insist.

Winner of Medal Of Stainhood for the week: Doug Saunders of The Globe and Mail

Here is the winner:

Here is the medal:

Here is the cause: Was our Afghan saga useless – or worse?

And here is the justification - by Terry Glavin:
I can't decide whether Doug Saunders' most recent attempt at journalism is downright creepy, disturbingly incompetent or merely comical. In any case, in his error-riddled essay he deceptively attributes any number of horrible things to UNAMA/NATO's "huge exercise" since 2006 that should accurately be attributed to late Obama-era half measures and a general shabbiness of the UNAMA/NATOs dismantling and withdrawal. Saunders claims a huge poll shows Afghans "overwhelmingly favour the Taliban over NATO forces and their own government," when the poll shows nothing of the kind - all polls that delve into that question in fact show the exact opposite. Saunders also claims that Afghan life expectancy (45-46) was actually better in the Taliban time, when in fact the WHO reports Afghan life expectancy today at 59 (m) and 61 (f). I even pointed out his misreading of the data to him several weeks ago, and sent him the references. He ignored them and reported what he knows to be untrue anyway. There's bullshit in almost every paragraph. Disgraceful behaviour by "Canada's national newspaper" today, and by Saunders.
Check.

Russian FSO to monitor "negatively minded citizens"

From the Russian Izvestia:
Since this year, the Federal Protective Service (FSO)* will conduct daily monitoring of all publications by Russian bloggers on their attitude to the government. "Powers"** will create a special database of negatively minded citizens who post on their Internet sites publications of opposition (dissident) leaning. At the same time representatives of FSO intend to follow not only known bloggers from the capital, but also control web users from the regions. This was told to "Izvestia" by a source close to FSO.
"It is not about control or tightening some nuts***. It is just that when we'll be able to monitor bloggers and create a database, it will become easier to track and prevent many egregious incidents . For example, before the two activists of the banned National Bolshevik Party pelted with tomatoes the King of the Netherlands in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the information on the preparation of this act has been already on the web. If it were followed, then this would not have happened,"  said the anonymous source.
Yeah, now pull the other one. On the other hand, why not? What is allowed to NSA and MI5/6/7... is surely OK for FSO. Besides, who knows: King of Netherlands may not like tomatoes indeed.

(*) Federal Protective Service (FSO) or Federalnaya Sluzhba Okhrany is a result of good ole KGB being split into external and internal security services. Unfortunately (or intentionally, who knows, when choosing the name for the new service, the word "Okhrana" (protection) that was used also for the infamous Tzarist Okhranka. Well, whatever.

(**) Powers: the only (and poorly matching) translation for the relatively new Russian word Силовики (Siloviki), which in fact is used as a general term for all kinds of enforcement outfits: police, army, FSB, FSO, you name it.

(***) This is Google's choice of translation, and I liked it too much to change. Some nuts will be definitely put in a vise.

Ariel Sharon, RIP - the giant that left eight years ago

The man and his life story were both controversial. He changed allegiances in politics, changed his opinions and toward the end of his life succeeded to become hated both by the lefties and the righties, not to mention the Arab world, where saying his name was on par with mentioning Satan. Which means that he was going in the right direction.

Still, this is how I want to remember him: an authentic hero who loved his country and his people beyond everything. And, no matter how large was his share of mistakes, his deeds, his courage and his love matter more on the scale of his life.

RIP, Arik.

And a really good obituary by Marc Goldberg ar the Harry's Place: The Passing of a Warrior.

People of the world: "Sheik" Nasrallah needs your love. And a world-shattering Chexclusive!

While this here blog tends to treat the famous groundhog of Beirut with a measure of derision usually reserved for more important political figures, it couldn't be denied that Hasan Nasrallah is a human being. As such, due to his heroic seclusion in an underground facility, he is in need of more love than other simple mortals. While his outwardly tough televised performances try to hide this, from time to time the need erupts, like in this case.

Hezbollah leader Nasrallah commented on the affair in his recent address, without mentioning Fairuz's name. "I understand that no one is permitted to voice expressions of love here," he said. "If someone voices an expression of love for someone else, it immediately sparks an outrage and can lead to the destruction of the country we all love."
No sentient being could disregard this bitter cry of a soul, isolated for so long (eight years by now) in a dump underground shelter. For no reason whatsoever, I haste to add, but this is immaterial for the purpose of this post.

So, dear reader(s), if you are a warm-blooded human being and not some NSA (or Google) bot, please do find a way to express your love to this person. Even if you hate his guts. I think that a dried flower, pressed inside a book* for some time and sent to Sheik Nasrallah, Beirut, Lebanon, care of Iranian embassy, will do. Or a colorful postcard with a view of some seaside resort (no nudes and/or semi-nudes, please). Something in this vein, you see what I mean by now. Nothing outrageously expensive, like a Hellfire missile or a bunker buster... just some love.

(*) As long as it is a proper Islamic book, of course.

This issue aside, you are now invited to witness the biggest scoop of the XXI century: the unveiling of the sixth child of Ernesto "Che" Guevara. It is a matter of record that the late creep hero of the proletariat had 5 kids: Hilda (1956–1995), Aleida (b. 1960), Camilo (b. 1962), Celia (b. 1963), Ernesto (b. 1965). But (and remember where you read it first, please!) there is at least one other child that is not mentioned in his official biography.

First, a historical reference: we have reported here on the first long stay of Che in Israel in 1965. However, the truth of his Jewish roots was disclosed to him by his mom long before this date. And Che, known for his fierce loyalty to causes, has thrown himself wholeheartedly into the Zionist intelligent service abroad (spying, in short). Since his cover as a revolutionary was good with many other terrorist freedom fighting outfits, Che was warmly accepted in Lebanon by local insurgents. By some even more warmly then by others, and the result of this warmth was: yes, ladies and gentlemen, I give you a hitherto unknown sixth child of Ernesto "Che" Guevara - no other than "Sheik" Hassan Nasralla (born in 1960). Here is the irrefutable proof:

(The eyeglasses in the regular T-shirt picture on the left were added to attenuate the likeness).

Notice the considerable effort made by the youngster to keep his facial hair and his headgear similar to his dad's...

Of course, being born of an Islamic mom, young Hassan can't be considered Jewish, not according to Halacha. But the blood will tell, you shall see it.

So there. Now you know one of the well-kept Elders' secrets. Rejoice!

And a Redeemer will come to Zion!

Rabbi Yoel Ben-Nun, agree or disagree with what he thinks about the current peace negotiations and the Palestinians' mindset, finishes his article Lies I've been told about 'occupation' by a conclusion that is difficult to argue with:

Israeli government ministers and Knesset members, upon making a historic and legal decision on the outline of the American agreement, and on borders which will be set "based on the 1967 lines with land swaps" – if most of you are convinced that there is no other choice, that the State of Israel cannot be perceived in Israel and in the world as the side which thwarted the agreement – at least don't lie to yourselves, and set conditions which will expose the truth.
At least say in advance: Any Israeli agreement to permanent borders will be completely canceled if it becomes clear that the Palestinian terror against the "occupation of 1948" will continue after the agreement and if Palestinian missiles are placed on the ruins of the settlers' communities, and under the Palestinian villages.
Amen to that.
