Light Colored 1890's Day Dress

From the seller:

1890's 2-PC WALKING OUTFIT SATIN HIGH NECK PUFFED SLEEVES MUSEUM DE-ACCESSIONED

A regal 1890's satin 2 PIECE walking suit, having a high necked beaded trimmed collar and and wonderful large puffed sleeves.

Recently de-accessioned from the Metropolitan museum of Art in New York City. The gown still retains it's original Museum ID catalog string tag and sewn in tags.

No designer label.
The bodice is accented with cream colored sheer organdy with black leaves design, found on collar, front insert and on sleeves. The bodice is lined with white silk and with 13 covered whale bone baleen stays and has front hook and loop closure.

The skirt closes by hooks and loops at the back and is poor/fair condition. Its silk lining has a added wide net lace dust ruffle at hem. Inside of skirt has ties to adjust fullness bustle effect. The hem has a wire inserted around perimeter added for fullness at base. The back is accented with a large satin bow and the skirt is gathered into numerous pleats that makes for a nice fall.

Condition: The outfit is in fair/good condition for its age. The bodice lining has begun to shred. No underarm staining. The organdy has begun to split.

The skirt lining is in the beginnings of shredding. The outside satin of skirt has begun to split in one area as seen in last photos. Two small water stains in front from my iron spitting.

MEASUREMENTS

Jacket: Bust: 35", Waist: 32", Across back shoulders seam to seam 12",
Shoulder to jacket hem: 46",
Sleeve length: 23" with cuff turned up. Shoulder to bodice hem 18", Shoulder to hem front 58", Shoulder to hem back
Skirt: Waist 31-1/2",
Front length 40-1/2",
Back length 44-1/2".

A truly grand outfit. A great display outfit and worthy of repair. Antique clothing should not be worn

From Me:

I think it's a couple years later than the seller believes - mostly due to the ribbons on the shoulders which were popular later. Really, the next time I see some of that fabulous summer scarf making material, I might consider it for a dress like this instead. :-)

Turn of the Century Dress and Dolman!

From the seller:

ANTIQUE/VINTAGE 1890'S DRESS AND CAPE. AS YOU SEE IN THE PICTURES IT NEEDS RESTORED. WELL WORTH THE TIME.

From Me:

1899 Fashion Plate

I wanted to include this fashion plate because the sleeves are similar - it has a bit of the flare of the extant gown at the cuff but, really, the almost extinct puff at the armscye is still there.

What I love about this is that it's probably for a slightly older lady who wanted the fashions of ten years ago but to still look fashionable in the very late 1890's as well. The dolman went out of style in the late 1880's but this one is cut to the cape like fashion of the turn of the century.

Overall, it's a pretty fun outfit.

1890's Ballgown with lovely embroidery

From the seller:

ANTIQUE DRESS 1881 SATIN 2PC BEADED RECEPTION GOWN TRAIN MUSEUM DE-ACCESSIONED WITH PAIR SHOES PARIS LABEL A. FELIX BREVETE, 15 FAUB PT., HONORE PARIS

This is an attractive FRENCH Reception Dress gown of the 1880's period, that a mid to upper class woman would wear. A regal trained 2-piece in construction ivory satin gown/dress lavishly decorated with gold and crystal beadwork, gold sequins and colored faceted stone jewels paillettes.

Gown comes with it's original beaded pumps. Labelled HELLSTERN & SONS, BREVETES, PARIS.

Recently de-accessioned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection in New York City.

Labeled on petersham. Reads A. FELIX, PARIS, see photo for details of label.

The front of bodice is decorated lavishly and skillfully done with beadwork and having floral tambour lace inserts. Bodice has cap sleeves with double oversized ruffles. The bodice has hook and loop front closure fastening with a tight fitting bodice. Bodice comes to a point in front and back.

The bodice is lined with cream silk and has 10 fabric covered whale baleen stays. No underarm discoloration.

The skirt closes by hooks and loops at back and gathers with pleats in the center back with fullness for a nice fall with very long train. The skirt is lined with a tan satin.

BODICE: Bust 28", Waist 24", Sleeve Length 5-1/2". Across shoulder 15", Shoulder to hem 59",

Shoulder to waist with point 20", Shoulder to waist at sides 18"

Front skirt length 42"

Back length 47".

Shoes: Length 9-1/2"

Width 2-1/2"

Height 4".

Condition: The gown is in fair/poor condition. Satin is shredding in skirt and in bodice. No underarm discoloration, but has large underarm tears. I do not see any bead loss, but lets say there is a few lost beads.
Some light surface soiling at hemline. Bodice lining is fair with shredding, skirt lining is poor with shredding.
The skirt is in poor condition with many split tears to material as shown in photos. Shoes are in fair/good condition with satin splitting, and minor bead loss.

I have described this gown as fair/poor, for the collector who looks for perfection, I believe it should be rated fair condition in my opinion.

A truly grand display dress/gown for display. Antique clothing should not be worn.

From Me:

This gown is a good 15 years, if not a bit more, than 1881. The sleeves are too puffy and there isn't the form fitting skirt you'd expect with the natural form in the early 1880's. Rather, this is the later 1890's - probably 1896-1898. Really, it has a lot of remarkable similarity with this gown at the Met other than this extant gown has puffier sleeves. The skirts are the same shape and the embroidery placement is pretty similar.

ANTIQUE CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES : CLOTHING 1880 - 1900

From Me:
1896 Fashion Plate

1896 Fashion Plate

Okay, so the puffy sleeves give away the 1890's aspect of this dress. It's probably from about 1896 based on the styling such as the jacket and the larger than your head sleeves.

This is probably the perfect dress to go caroling in or to visit family and friends this evening. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
