Review: The Wedding Dress Diaries - Aimee Carson

Get in the bridal spirit with this prequel novella to the fabulous new Mills & Boon Modern Tempted contemporary romance series, The Wedding Season!

Bridal shop owner Amber Davis dreaded the moment she'd run in to Parker Robinson while working on his sister's wedding. She'd spent every summer in the Hamptons with his family as a kid, fantasizing about kissing him. But she's shocked to discover that the confident boy who'd given Amber her first taste of love has become a man who mocks its very existence.

Parker can't believe the girl who used to follow him around has grown into a beautiful woman—one with some very naughty ideas when she fits him for his tux. But Amber also knows why he's shut everyone out of his life. She's not the kind of woman Parker gets involved with…even if he can't keep his hands off her.

Amber doesn't do one-night stands or casual hookups, but she's wanted Parker long enough to make him an exception—especially if she can convince him he needs love in his life, too.

Look for all four books in the Wedding Season series from Mills & Boon Modern Tempted: The Unexpected Wedding Guest by Aimee Carson, Girl Least Likely to Marry by Amy Andrews,Maid of Dishonor by Heidi Rice and Last Groom Standing by Kimberly Lang.

Review:
I had already read the first book in the multi-author Wedding Season series from Mills & Boon's Modern Tempted range so I'd met Amber and Parker before and was curious to read this story to see how they got together. The Wedding Dress Diaries is a quick read but it was a cute story and it makes for a nice introduction to the series.

Parker is the older brother of one of Amber's best friends and she has had a crush on him since she was a young girl. He is five years older though and always thought of her as his little sister's pesky friend. Amber is the kind of girl who dreams of big weddings and happily ever afters while Parker has abandonment issues and is determined to never let any woman get close to him. He is happy to stick with one night stands rather than risk getting his heart broken. They haven't seen each other for years until they bump into each other at his sister's engagement party and Parker doesn't even recognise Amber at first but he does find himself attracted to the beautiful woman she has become. Amber is determined to help Parker and his sister build a closer relationship and she is willing to take drastic measures to get what she wants.

I thought they make a really cute couple but since this is such a short story their relationship develops very quickly. I would have loved a longer story about them and there was definitely room to do that when you take into account Parker's history. If you're looking for a quick read then it's well worth giving this one a try - especially since it's a free read so you can't really lose. I'm planning on continuing with the rest of the series very soon and hope we'll see Amber and Parker make more of an appearance in future instalments.

Review:
I have been a fan of Mills & Boon romances since I was a teenager and they always hit the spot when I'm looking for a fun, sexy read that is going to leave me with a smile on my face. So when I was offered review copies of the books in their new Modern Tempted range I jumped at the chance to read them. I always love a good second chance romance so I was looking forward to The Unexpected Wedding Guest and it was an enjoyable story.

Reese and Mason married young and neither of them were fully prepared for the trials of marriage. Mason spent most of their short time together on tour in Afghanistan and Reese missed him like crazy. When he came back suffering with PTSD and acting like a completely different man she didn't know how to help him and she was devastated when he pushed her away. She has spent years trying to put her past behind her and is finally ready to move on with her perfect fiancé who is just the kind of guy her parents always wanted her to marry. When Mason turns up looking for "closure" and her fiancé walks away just days before their wedding Reese is forced to face up to the fact that she never got over Mason but will she be brave enough to give him another chance?

I think what I loved most about this one is that both Reese and Mason had made mistakes in the past and they were willing to look at things from each other's perspectives to figure out exactly why their marriage ended the way it did. They were both able to own up to the part they played in the breakup and were willing to discuss things like adults which made me believe that they could build a future together. Both of them have done a lot of growing up in the last 10 years but Reese in particular has gone from a spoiled, pampered princess to a woman who can stand on her own two feet and is willing to fight for what she wants. She is forced to face a few uncomfortable home truths but she does it with dignity and is determined to make changes in her life. It didn't hurt that they both had fabulous chemistry too!

The Unexpected Wedding Guest is the first book in a linked series featuring four best friends who were room mates in college. It was interesting to see the dynamics between Reese, Gina, Cassie and Marnie and I'm looking forward to getting to know them all better as we read their individual stories. All four books have been written by different authors with Girl Least Likely to Marry by Amy Andrews also released this month (I'll be reading that one very soon so keep an eye out for my review). The next two books, Maid of Dishonor by Heidi Rice and Last Groom Standing by Kimberly Lang, will be published in October and I'm already looking forward to getting my hands on them.

Review:
Last year I ended up getting a bit addicted to Christmas anthologies, not only are they a great way to discover new (to me) authors but they are also perfect for getting little bite sized pieces of Christmas spirit. You know going in that the stories are going to be fun to read and leave you with a smile on your face and that is exactly what I got with each of the four stories in the Baby, It's Cold Outside anthology. I hadn't read books by any of these four authors before but I'm definitely going to be looking out for all of them in the future. If you're looking for a collection of sexy stories with hot heroes who are just what the heroine needs to keep the cold away then look no further - this is definitely a must read selection!

'Tis the Season to Kiss Santa by Kate Hardy

In this first story we meet Ellie who absolutely loves everything about Christmas and spending time with her extended family. After a nasty break up she has travelled to the other side of the world to be with her godmother who is recovering in hospital and she is quick to volunteer her services at a Children's Christmas party. Mitch is the complete opposite of Ellie, throughout his childhood Christmas was never something to look forward to and now he is more than happy to ignore that time of the year completely. He only ends up agreeing to play Santa at the Christmas party because he hopes it will get him the promotion he has spent months working towards. Can Ellie teach Mitch the real meaning of Christmas and melt his heart?

I did enjoy this story but I have to admit it was my least favourite of the four. I liked the way Mitch started to reassess his life after watching the children at the party and was pleased to see him start to warm up as he got to know Ellie. I think my main problem with the story was that the conversations between them sometimes had a bit of a stilted feel to them and it didn't always feel true to life. I also felt that they rushed into having the big chat about not being able to guarantee anything long term - they had only met that afternoon so I didn't feel like that was something they would or even should be talking about so quickly. I know that things often move quickly in a short story but it came across as particularly rushed. It was still a sweet story though but I think I'd have enjoyed it even more if it had been a longer novel where there was time to develop the relationship more slowly.

'Tis the Season to Love Shopping by Heidi Rice

Kate moved from London to New York for her dream job but she left her boyfriend behind and their attempts at a long distance relationship were a disaster. Lonely and miserable she decides she might as well make the most of the Christmas day quiet to catch up on her work. When she ends up getting stuck in the department store with her boss's son thanks to a sudden blizzard things quickly start to heat up between them but can she trust a playboy with her heart?

I really enjoyed this story and would love to see more of Kate and Ryder in a future book. This story really does show that you shouldn't judge people by your first impressions or rumours that you hear about them. Both Kate and Ryder completely misjudge each other but as they get to know each other better they realise how wrong they were and how much they actually have in common. I loved the idea of being trapped in a department store and just being able to wander around and take whatever you needed to make it through the night, it sounded like a lot of fun and would be even better of you had someone as hot as Ryder to pass the time with. This story had everything I look for in a romance - great chemistry, fun banter, a sexy, protective hero and a likeable heroine.

'Tis the Season to be Kissed by Amy Andrews

Tamara is sick of men who are only interested in one thing, she is determined that she will no longer sleep with someone unless they have at least a chance of building a future together. She's not looking for guarantees but she wants someone who is looking for the same things from life as she is so has instigated a new rule - she won't even kiss a guy until their 10th date. To escape the New Year celebrations she is spending time alone in her friend's family cabin but the last thing she expects is for her very sexy, much younger brother to arrive. Luke has recently arrived home from Afghanistan and is planning on surprising his sister, it turns out the surprise is on him when he meets her drunk but adorable friend.

Without a doubt this was my favourite story in the anthology, I had so much fun reading it and as soon as I finished I wanted to go back to the beginning and start it all over again! Tamara is the kind of girl I think most women can relate to and she had me laughing out loud at the way she drunkenly propositions Luke. Now Luke, what can I say about Luke? I guess the main thing is he was absolutely delicious! Not only is he a returning hero with an incredibly chiselled body but he is also a genuinely nice, caring guy. I want to know where I can find a Luke of my very own please. I loved the connection between Tamara and Luke, they are so obviously attracted to each other but she is determined to resist him. I really enjoyed seeing him slowly break through her defences, the way he manages to fit their first 10 dates into the space of a day was hilarious but surprisingly romantic and I'm never going to look at a game of scrabble in quite the same way again! When they finally give in to their passion it was explosive and my only disappointment was that I wasn't ready for the story to end.

'Tis the Season to be Tempted by Aimee Carson

Evie has always been the black sheep of her family, she was the wild child who wanted to go off and do her own thing while her brother and sisters were happy to tow the family line and get a good education and find a good career or at the very least marry someone who fitted the family's idea of successful. Having spent 10 years away from home travelling with her ex boyfriend and his band she hates the idea of coming home with her tail between her legs now that things have all gone wrong. Wes has been her brother's best friend since childhood, he fits her parent's idea of the perfect guy - rich, successful and the CEO of his own company - so that automatically means that Evie shouldn't be interested in him. He couldn't be more different than any guy she has dated before but in spite of that she has always felt a surprising attraction to him. When they bump into each other on the way home sparks fly and they are both forced to reconsider what they want from life.

This was another enjoyable story, Evie was terrified of flying so she gets herself into quite a state by drinking too much on the plane. Watching her proposition Wes was really funny but he found her incredibly hard to resist. When she has had time to sober up Wes takes great enjoyment at teasing her about the things she said but she turns the tables on him when she sets out to seduce him. Because the couple have known each other for so long and we get to see things from both of their points of view it was much easier to believe how quickly things progress between them. The attraction between them is intense and the way Evie sets out to get her man was great fun to watch.

Amy Andrews

Hello and thanks for having me here at Feeling Fictional. I’ve noticed that you’re hosting the 2013 British books challenge which is fabulous. One of the best things about working on the Baby, It’s Cold Outside anthology was what a truly international experience it was. With two Brits – the fabulous Heidi Rice and Kate Hardy – and Aimee Carson from the USA and yours truly from Down Under, I think we all bring our own unique voices to the mix.

One of the exciting things for me was to write a snowed-in cabin story. Exciting because that kind of Christmas reality is so far from my own personal experience it’s startling! But I’ve always, always, always longed for a white Christmas so at least I got to create one on the page. Although having said that, my family and I were in the UK in Dec/Jan 2009/10 and we did indeed get a White Christmas – I’d warned the kids that we probably wouldn’t but man oh man, did it snow!

Which brings me to my point of this blog (that I realise has rambled a little) - snow! I freaking love the stuff! I know, I know, people will say to me, that’s because you don’t have to live with it day-in day-out for weeks on end, or put up with the icy roads or the slushy, dirty disgusting state as it melts. And I realise that it does cause horrible disruption to people’s lives but….it’s just soooo beautiful! Even the silence as it falls all around you is beautiful, don’t you think? To me, it’s right up there with rainbows. A natural wonder that’s totally awe-inspiring, that causes you to stop and stare and hold your breath just a little because there’s something so magical and almost other-worldly about it. Like fairies or unicorns or mermaids.

And did I mention pretty? Oh so pretty.

So this Christmas as I swelter in 40 degree heat, I will be thinking about that magical white Christmas in the UK a few years back and also about Luke and Tamara in that snowed-in cabin in Vermont, trying to keep their hands off each other and failing :-)

********************

It's funny you chose to talk about Snow Amy because we're supposed to be getting a lot of it this week. I can't say it's something I'm particularly looking forward to either. I agree that it is very pretty to look at and as a child I used to have a great time building snowmen, having snowball fights and going sledging but now I'm older I'm not so keen. If I can sit inside by a warm fire looking at the snow outside of the window the that's great but I hate having to go out and drive in it and my balance is terrible so watching me walking on the snow and ice is a bit like watching the beginning of Bambi LOL. No matter how old I am there is always something magical about a white Christmas though, as much as I dream of being somewhere hot and sunny when we have snow in January I don't think it would feel right spending Christmas day on a beach! We don't often seem to have snow over Christmas though so I'm glad you got to experience it when you were over here.
