Underrated Contemporary Romance Books

The Contemporary Romance Reading Challenge is hosted by Gone with the Words and Love at First Page. As part of the challenge they are setting a different topic every month that participants can choose to join in with which I think is a brilliant idea so you can expect a post like this to appear at random most months throughout the year.

The May Prompt is:
Underrated Contemporary Romance Books
(Links below will take you to my reviews)

There are lots of books I want to shout to the world about and get everyone reading but in the end to try and narrow down my list a bit I decided to only include books with less than 5000 ratings on Goodreads (most of these books fall in around the 2-3K mark). I love all of these authors and would happily recommend any of their books, where stories are part of a series the book I've mentioned is the first one but more often than not I've read and loved them all. The Lara Adrian book is possibly a bit of a cheat as it was only released this week but it's still got less than 5K ratings, it's her first self published contemporary romance and I loved it so much that I really want to rave about it!

  1. Ride With Me - Ruthie Knox
  2. Before I Fall - Jessica Scott
  3. Once Perfect - Cecy Robson
  4. Rocky Ride - Vivian Arend
  5. For 100 Days - Lara Adrian
  6. Unbound - Cara McKenna
  7. Come Back to Me - Mila Gray
  8. Sexcapades - Christine d'Abo
  9. Wrecked - Shiloh Walker
  10. Cake - Lauren Dane

Have you read any of my choices? What books would be on your most underrated list?

Review: This is One Moment - Mila Gray

A forbidden romance.
A wounded Marine who thinks he's beyond saving.
A girl who's determined to prove him wrong.

Didi Monroe's waited her whole life for the type of romance you see in the movies, so when Hollywood heartthrob Zac Ridgemont sweeps her off her feet, Didi believes she might finally have met the one.

While Zac's away filming for the summer, Didi begins her internship at a military hospital in California. There, she meets wounded Marine Noel Walker. Frustrated on the outside and broken on the inside, Walker's a pain-in-the-ass patient who refuses all help.

Yet Didi can't help but be drawn to him, and though he's strictly out of bounds it soon becomes impossible to ignore the sparks flying between them.

As the attraction simmers into dangerous territory, Didi finds herself falling hard for a man she knows is going to break her heart. Because Walker doesn't believe in love or happy ever afters. So what possible future can there be?

Then tragedy hits, shattering both their worlds, and Didi is forced to choose between fighting for love or merely falling for the illusion of it.

From Mila Gray, author of the bestselling romance Come Back To Me, comes a devastatingly beautiful, compelling and sexy story about the meaning of love and the heartbreak of loss.

Review:
I'm a huge fan of Mila Gray / Sarah Alderson so I couldn't wait to read the sequel to Come Back to Me and had very high expectations for This is One Moment. We already met the heroine Didi in the previous book, she is Jessa's best friend, and after everything she's been through I was looking forward to seeing her get a happily ever after.

Didi is a romantic at heart, her parents have a fantastic marriage and Didi has always dreamed of having the same but her love life has always been disastrous. Things finally seem to be looking up though, she's finished her degree in psychology, she's dating movie star Zac, a guy most girls would kill to be with, and now she's about to start an internship at a military hospital while she studies for her masters. She has her whole life planned out and it doesn't include falling for one of her patients, especially not a frustrating and grumpy Marine like Noel Walker.

Only two members of Walker's team survived the roadside ambush that cost him his sight and although he was able to get Sanchez to safety he is full of guilt about those who were left behind. Suffering with PTSD makes Walker's life unbearable, he has no idea what to do with his life and no hope for the future because he is being crippled by the guilt he feels. The first meeting between Walker and Didi doesn't go well but she is determined to find a way to get through to him and the more time they spend together the more she starts to realise that her feelings are in no way platonic.

I really enjoyed the romance between these two, it's such a slow build up as they become friends and slowly start to open up to each other and it was nice that nothing felt rushed between them. They obviously have chemistry but it takes a long time before they act on it because Didi is worried about crossing lines and losing her internship but the wait just made things that much sweeter when they finally give into temptation. Didi is such a kind and caring person, she wants to do her best by Walker and the other guys she's working with but at the same time she's aware that she's risking getting her heart broken if Walker doesn't learn to open up and let her in. Walker's back story broke my heart, he had been through so much and he did his best to survive and help his team mates but he can't forget the ones he wasn't able to save. He wants Didi but doesn't feel worthy of her love so he tends to push her away thinking he's doing it for her own good and there were definitely times when I wanted to shake some sense into him.

I think one of the things I enjoyed most about this story was meeting the other wounded soldiers on the ward though, Mila Gray does a fantastic job of showing the challenges that these guys face after coming home with horrific injuries and how they all have different coping mechanisms. Sanchez lost an arm and a leg but he's just grateful to be alive, he's the life and soul of the party who is determined to live life to the fullest and his banter often had me laughing out loud. On the other hand Dodds who lost both of his legs and is really struggling to come to terms with what happened. He's deeply depressed and seeing how miserable he was just broke my heart.

Although This is One Moment is at it's heart a romance novel there is a lot more to it than that and some of the other story lines can be quite painful to read at times. This isn't all sweetness and light, there is a realness that will tug on your heartstrings and make you feel grateful to be alive. Mila Gray has given us a fantastic follow up to her first novel and I'm definitely excited to see what she comes up with next.

Blog Tour: This is One Moment - Mila Gray

I'm a huge fan of Mila Gray (also known as Sarah Alderson) so I'm thrilled to be taking part in the blog tour to celebrate the release of her second new adult title This is One Moment. I'll be posting my full review later today but in the meantime I have a fantastic extract, some teasers and a brilliant giveaway for you all!

Author Bio:

Mila Gray is the pen name for young adult author Sarah Alderson.

Having spent most of her life in London, Sarah quit her job in the non profit sector in 2009 and took off on a round the world trip with her husband and tutu-wearing daughter on a mission to find a new place to call home.

After almost a year spent wandering around India, Singapore, Australia and the US, they settled in Bali where Sarah now spends her days writing and trying to machete open coconuts without severing a limb. She finished her first novel Hunting Lila just before they left the UK, wrote the sequel, Losing Lila, on the beach in India, and had signed a two book deal with Simon & Schuster by the time they reached Bali. Since then she has published a further four novels and several short stories.

The contemporary thriller The Sound, was published in the US in May 2014, while Out of Control, a thriller with a focus on human trafficking, was released in May ’14 in the UK and May ’15 in the US. Her first adult novel Come Back To Me was released in the summer 2014 by Pan Macmillan in the UK and became an instant bestseller. It will be released in the US in December 2015 by Simon & Schuster. Foreign rights have been sold to Brazil, Australia, US, Canada, Italy and Portugal.

Sarah is also a screenwriter. She adapted her first novel Hunting Lila for the screen (currently in pre-production) and is working on several other screenplays (multi-tasking is one of her favorite things).

Her first adult novel, Come Back To Me, was published in June 2014. The second, This One Moment, will be out in August 2015.

Sarah has co-written the Hunting Lila screenplay, which is currently in the early stages of production, and continues to blog about her life and travels.

Extract:

This is the first day of my summer internship and I’m being given a tour. The pool was the first stop, the locker room the second. I saw more in those few startled seconds than I think a tour of the entire facilities will give me - and array of limbless bodies, men missing legs and arms. But clearly not their sense of humour. My cheeks are still burning at some of the comments and suggestions made by the guys in the changing room.

“Damn it!” someone yells, making me jump.

I scan the corridor. The cursing came from the room on my right.

“Damn!”

I inch towards the door and peer around it.

There’s a guy on the bed with a bandage wrapped around his eyes. One arm is in a sling. A tray of food sits on the table in front of him and he’s struggling with one arm and no sight to open what looks like a carton of yoghurt. Frustration seems to be getting the better of him.
I take a step inside the room. He reaches for a spoon, fumbling on the tray and knocking off a dish that clatters to the ground, spraying cereal all over the floor and his sheets.

“Here-” I start to say, but he lets out a roar, stabs the spoon through the lid of the pot, next thing I know I’m splattered head to foot in a cold shower of strawberry yoghurt.

“Oh,” I say, feeling it drip from my hair onto my blouse.

“Who’s there?” he growls, raising his head.

“Um,” I say, blinking yoghurt out of my eyes.

“My name’s Didi. Didi Monroe”.

“What are you doing?” he snaps.

“Getting a yoghurt facial it would seem,” I mumble, wiping the face with the back of my arm. Great, I just blow-dried my hair. I’m going to need to go and take a shower now and find some new clothes to wear.

“Are you a nurse?” the guy asks, scowling in my direction.

I shake my head and then, realizing he can’t see me, say “no”.

“Well what are you doing in here, then?”

I blink at him in astonishment. “I heard you shouting. I came to see if I could help”.

“I don’t need your help. I don’t need any help.” He shouts. “Just get out!”

I’m speechless. Totally speechless. What an asshole. “Fine,” I stammer. “I’ll leave you to it. Enjoy your breakfast”.

I walk into the corridor, cursing under my breath, still dripping yoghurt. This day can’t get any worse. And then I look up and see a poster of a gurgling baby with the words “Laugh and the world laughs with you” written across it in comic sans.

Jose jogs back along the corridor just then and taking one look at me standing in a puddle of pink yoghurt, his eyes widen. “Oh shit”, he says, trying not to laugh and failing. “You met Grumpy, I take it”.

Review: Come Back to Me - Mila Gray

Home on leave in sunny California, Marine and local lothario Kit Ryan finds himself dangerously drawn to his best friend's sister, Jessa - the one girl he can't have.

But Kit's not about to let a few obstacles stand in his way and soon Jessa's falling for his irresistible charms.

What starts out as a summer romance of secret hook-ups and magical first times quickly develops into a passionate love affair that turns both their worlds upside down.

When summer's over and it's time for Kit to redeploy, neither Kit nor Jessa are ready to say goodbye. Jessa's finally following her dreams and Kit's discovered there's someone he'd sacrifice everything for.

Jessa's prepared to wait for Kit no matter what. But when something more than distance and time rips them apart they're forced to decide whether what they have is really worth fighting for.

A breathtaking, scorchingly hot story about love, friendship, family and finding your way back from the edge of heartbreak.

Review:
I'm a HUGE fan of Sarah Alderson, she writes such incredibly hot YA boys so the second I found out that she was writing her first NA book under the name of Mila Gray it went to the top of my wish list! When Sarah sent me a very early copy of Come Back to Me I can't tell you how excited I was to read it, I had high expectations for the story and she utterly smashed them.

Just reading the prologue gave me goosebumps and put a knot of fear in my stomach. You know that something terrible is going to happen but you're not sure exactly what or even who it will happen to. The story then skips back in time to 3 months previously to when Jessa's brother Riley and his best friend Kit have just returned home from their latest detachment with the marines. Jessa has had a crush on Kit for years but she never even dreamed he would be interested in her. It's not long before the sparks start to fly between them though and as they spend more time together they slowly start to fall in love. What I loved most about this book was that Jessa and Kit spend time actually getting to know each other outside of the bedroom, they have fantastic chemistry but they don't feel the need to rush things. In fact because they have known each other for such a long time they have a strong bond of friendship that they are both wary of losing each other if things don't work out between them.

They have to keep their relationship a secret in the beginning partly because they are worried about what Riley's reaction would be but mainly because of Jessa's father. He used to be a marine sniper and is now Kit's Colonel and he isn't the kind of guy you want to get on the wrong side of. Jessa is under a lot of pressure at home, her father is quite obviously suffering with some kind of PTSD and his mood swings make him nearly impossible to live with. Jessa and her mother live in fear of doing something that will upset him or set him off and they spend their whole lives walking on egg shells. Living that way has really started to knock Jessa's confidence so I loved seeing Kit help her rediscover her dreams and learn to stand up for herself. Kit is hot as hell but he's also incredibly thoughtful, sweet and romantic and he is constantly thinking of little ways to cheer Jessa up. He treats her like she is special and she starts to believe that he is right. The chemistry between them is utterly fantastic and they are scorching hot together but the sex scenes are never crude and they're always just as emotional as they are sexy.

Come Back to Me is intense, passionate, romantic and totally swoon worthy. It made me laugh one minute and sob my heart out the next, broke my heart but helped put it back together again and it made me fall in love. Mila Gray captures the intensity of first relationships, that feeling of being head over heels "I can't live without you" in love and she makes you go through it right alongside Jessa and Kit. This isn't just a romance though, it's also a story about family and friendship, about loss and grief but also about finding hope in the darkest times and realising that no matter how hard it gets life goes on. In case I haven't made it obvious enough I absolutely LOVED Come Back to Me and I can't wait to get my hands on anything else that Mila Gray / Sarah Alderson writes in the future!
