Review:
I really enjoyed Shadow Bound so was looking forward to picking up Shadow Fall which is the second book in Erin Kellison's Shadow series. Please note that this review will contain slight spoilers for the first book in the series so please don't read further if you've not already read it.

I had expected the story to pick up immediately after the ending of Shadow Bound so it was quite a surprise when I discovered that two years had passed since the events in the first book. Custo was tortured and killed while protecting Adam and Talia from their enemies and doing so earned him a place in Heaven as an angel. He doesn't want to stay in Heaven though, the last thing he discovered before he died was that there was another traitor in the Segue Institute and he is determined to find a way to warn his best friend Adam that he is still in danger.

As Custo journeys through the Shadowlands trying to find his way back to earth he stumbles across Annabella. She is a ballet dancer who is so skilled that her dancing has opened a pathway between the two realms. But Custo isn't the only one who has spotted Annabella - she has also drawn the attention of a dangerous hunter who has now followed her to earth and is determined to claim her as his own. Can Custo protect her from Wolf and at the same time track down the traitor in the institute to make sure Adam and Talia are safe?

As much as I liked Shadow Bound I have to confess I wasn't a massive fan of Adam as the hero so I was pleased to discover that this was Custo's story because I already liked him a lot more. Custo went through hell to protect Adam and even died for his friend so I was already impressed by his bravery and the more I found out about him the better he got. Custo doesn't feel like he should be an angel, he has done things in his past that he isn't proud of and doesn't feel worthy but the more you find out about him the more you realise that he has always had honourable intentions. I liked the way Custo is so protective of his friends and also of Annabella but I really wanted him to put himself first just once, or for someone to stand up and fight for him for a change. He is so protective that it turns into more of a self destructive streak!

Although I like Custo more than Adam I didn't enjoy Shadow Fall as much as I enjoyed Shadow Bound. I think that was mainly because I didn't connect with Annabella in the slightest - I just couldn't believe how stupid she was to go off with Custo so quickly (literally the first time she meets him). When the heroine is so scared of the hero that she leaves a voice mail message telling people who she is with & where she was taken in case they find her body I find it hard to accept that she has the hots for him a few minutes later. I had to laugh when Custo called her sensible for making the phone call - OK so if she is murdered the police might be able to find her killer but that wouldn't make her any less dead would it? That hardly makes her sensible in my eyes! As much as I know Custo is the hero she didn't have a clue who he was and I lost all respect for her at that point and didn't get it back. I also found myself quickly getting bored with the descriptions of her dancing but that is probably because ballet is something that has never interested me in the slightest - I don't know the names of the dance moves so found it hard to picture the dances in my head. If you're a ballet fan then you would probably enjoy that part of the story a lot more than I did. The romance between them was so fast that I didn't find it even slightly believable and I just didn't feel enough of a connection between them to like them as a couple.

Unfortunately I was disappointed with Shadow Fall but I'm still curious enough about this series and the world that Erin Kellison has created to try the next book. I'm hoping that I'll enjoy the next instalment much more and am interested in finding out what happens with Adam, Talia and Custo even if I don't particularly care about Annabella. I'm also desperate to find out more about Shadowman who I fell for in the first book and love even more now.

Quick Review: Callum - Malorie Blackman

Callum is a new short story by Malorie Blackman, written exclusively for the World Book Day App.

In a hostile alternative society, the pale-skinned noughts are treated as inferiors by the ruling dark-skinned Crosses. Callum’s a nought. Sephy’s a Cross. In their world, they simply don’t fit – it’s as clear as black and white. But their childhood friendship has grown into intense, burning love. They have to find a way to be together. Then Sephy’s kidnapped, and Callum’s faced with a choice– his love for Sephy or his loyalty to his brother. Once that choice is made, there can be no looking back.

An explosive and passionate short story, set during the timeline of Malorie Blackman’s original dystopian bestseller, Noughts and Crosses.

The World Book Day App is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and is absolutely FREE! Download now from the App store.

Review:
Callum is a short story set during the time line of Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses that can be read for free via the World Book Day app from iTunes or purchased via Amazon for the Kindle.

I wouldn't recommend reading this if you haven't already read Noughts & Crosses as it tells the end of the story again but this time from Callum's perspective instead of Sephy's and therefore includes spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the original book. If you enjoyed the series you'll love reading Callum's story though.

I'm not going to say much about the plot because anyone who has read Noughts & Crosses already knows what happens. I will say that knowing what the outcome would be just made reading this story even more bitter sweet. It was really nice to get inside Callum's head and see exactly what he was thinking during Sephy's kidnapping. Reading this has reminded me just how much I loved Noughts & Crosses and that I never finished reading the series so I'm going to have to pick up the second book Knife Edge very soon.

    Review: Fever - Dee Shulman

    A fearless Roman gladiator
    A reckless twenty-first-century girl
    A mysterious virus unites them . . .

    AD 152
Sethos Leontis, a skilled and mesmerising fighter, is unexpectedly wounded and lies dangerously close to death.

    AD 2012
Eva is brilliant - but troubled. Starting her new life at a school for the gifted, a single moment in the lab has terrifying results.

An extraordinary link brings Sethos and Eva together, but it could force them apart - because the fever that grips them cannot be cured, and falling in love could be lethal.

Can love survive when worlds collide and time itself is threatened?

    Review:
As soon as I read the blurb for Fever I knew I had to read it, come on - a time travel story revolving around a 21st century girl and a Roman Gladiator - how could I resist? I have to admit I've not read many time travel stories before and definitely none involving a gladiator so I was curious to see how things would play out. I really enjoyed this first instalment to Dee Shulman's new trilogy and am looking forward to getting my hands on the next 2 books, I just hope I don't have to wait too long for them!

I have to admit that I didn't think I was going to like Eve very much when she was first introduced to us. In the first couple of pages she came across as a bit of a selfish brat but as I got to know her better I really warmed to her. There is a bit of "too perfect to be true" about her as she is super smart, so beautiful that boys fall at her feet and even a talented musician and singer but by the time I discovered that about her I already really liked her so I was able to ignore that and get on with enjoying the story. Eve hasn't had an easy family life and has never found it very easy to make friends, she struggles to fit in and has worked hard to get herself kicked out of her last two schools. When she finds out about St. Magdalene's boarding school she feels like it is her last chance to find the place where she belongs and she finally starts making friends. I felt quite sorry for her when one of her new friends turned against her but it came across as very realistic teenage behaviour and I'm sure most girls will have faced something similar at some point in their lives.

Seth on the other hand was a character I liked from the moment he was introduced. He isn't a gladiator through choice but because he was captured and forced into slavery. He doesn't particularly enjoy the battle but fights because he has to to survive - when fights are to the death he is left with no other option but kill or be killed. Seth is strong, fast and an exceptional fighter which is what has kept him alive. I particularly liked Seth's relationship with another slave Matt, they were captured at the same time and have looked out for each other ever since. Matt isn't strong enough to be a fighter but his healing skills have kept both him and Seth alive in the arena. The pair of them have been through a lot together but their friendship makes them both stronger.

The story switches between Londinium in AD 152 where we find out about Seth and Matt's lives and St Magdalene's boarding school in AD 2012-2013 where we see things from Eve's perspective as she struggles to fit in at her new school. I was very curious to see how Dee Shulman would make these two worlds collide and introduce the characters to each other and found the time travel aspect of the story very interesting. I'm not going to give any detail about it because I don't want to give spoilers so I'll just say it was a concept I've not come across before. I had hoped for a few more answers to my questions by the end of the book but I've just been left even more eager to get my hands on the next instalment.

Although I felt that both of the main romances were a little bit rushed I do think that this is something that will be expanded upon as the series continues. It is hard to get the balance right in the first book of a series when there is so much world building to be done and we are being introduced to a whole new set of characters. I would definitely recommend Fever to anyone who enjoys time travel or romance stories or who is interested in finding out more about the life of a Roman Gladiator. This was a promising start to a new series and it's one I'm looking forward to continuing.
