Book Review: Moonlight Scandals by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Moonlight Scandals
de Vincent #3
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Reading Level: Adult
Genres: Paranormal Romance
Released: Avon Mass Market
Review Source: January 29th 2019

The culmination of a darkly sexy, compellingly eerie, and totally binge-worthy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout, MOONLIGHT SCANDALS (Avon Books, on-sale 1.29.19) is the perfect read for anyone who found themselves absolutely entranced by The Witches of East End! This series is such a gothic soap opera, and MOONLIGHT SCANDALS provides drama, sex and suspense in equal measure to Moonlight Sins and Moonlight Seduction.

The de Vincent brothers, Lucian, Gabriel and Devlin are cursed – or, at least, the women they fall in love with are. Family legend is that de Vincent women are fated to die early…and tragically. And tragedy is something the de Vincents excel at: this dysfunctional family has a dark past: their mother fell prey to the curse, their father died under mysterious circumstances (with many in their upscale Louisiana community whispering of murder or suicide), their sister is catatonic after having been thought missing for ten years…and their uncle is just a power-hungry bastard. The brothers all live in an antebellum Southern mansion, which is not in the gentile districts of New Orleans, but deep in the bayou. Everyone knows, bad things happen in the bayou.

Moonlight Scandals is the final book in the de Vincent supernatural series. This book has the elements of drama, passion, supernatural, and intrigue. Readers of the previous two books will be in for a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

Moonlight Scandals is set in modern New Orleans, and the reader is taken through the romantic tensions of the eldest de Vincent son. We are introduced to a new heroin in Rosie Herpin. She is a widower paranormal investigator who always had an interest in the de Vincent house. Little did she know how her path would cross with Devlin de Vincent. Devlin being the eldest of the de Vincent brothers, always felt his job was to protect his brothers. Never really letting himself have anything for himself. Devlin and Rosie had a Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth relationship, fueled by their own stubbornness and pride. Their relationship, however, is not the only theatrics both of our protagonists find themselves in. Noisy reporter, troublesome uncle, and possible haunting shape the ebb and flow of Devlin and Rosie's story.

I started reading this book without having read the first two books, oops. I was able to follow the story due to the author, Jennifer L. Armentrout, giving the little back story I needed on the de Vincent family through out the book. Devlin and Rosie really reminded me of a sexually charged Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth relationship (Pride and Prejudice). I was in awe of how I was infuriated and sympathetic with Devlin's inability to trust Rosie, because of assumptions based on his past interactions with people. Rosie was the kind of woman that reminded me of myself. She was lost after the death of her husband going into psychology to understand his passing and not really pursuing any career path with her degrees. The only thing she truly pursued with any pleasure was paranormal investigations. Though set in a supernatural setting, I thought it was missing those true elements of ghosts and paranormal story. I also thought some of the extra characters were set up to be elements of dramatic, but fell short. Other than those critics, this book was engaging and easy to read the night away. I recommend to read the first two and then this one just to have the context of Devlin's previous interactions with his brothers. Definitely a fun read and now I'll be finding the first two so I can complete my interactions with the de Vincent brothers.

Coming this June: Moonlight Seduction by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The de Vincent brothers are back—and so is the intrigue that surrounds them—in #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s sizzling new novel . . .

Nicolette Bresson never thought she’d return to the de Vincents’ bayou compound. It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up . . . and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. Avoiding Gabe should be easy, especially when so much of Nikki’s time is spent trying not to be stabbed in the back by the malicious hangers-on who frequent the mansion. But escaping memories of Gabe, much less his smoking-hot presence, is harder than expected—especially since he seems determined to be in Nikki’s space as much as possible.

Gabriel spent years beating himself up over his last encounter with Nikki. He’d wanted her then, but for reasons that were bad for both of them. Things have now changed. Gabe sees more than a girl he’s known forever; he sees a smart, talented, and heartbreakingly beautiful woman . . . one who’s being stalked from the shadows. Now, Gabe will do anything to keep Nikki safe—and to stop the de Vincent curse from striking again.

APOLLYCON 2017 Blog Tour - Anna Todd Spotlight Guest Post + Giveaway

We are so excited to spotlight Anna Todd, one of many Apollycon 2017 attending authors. If you haven't read any of her books, now is the time to pick her infamously favored series, After.

Thing you're most excited about for Apollycon 2017

I’m the most excited to meet the readers and hang out with all of the authors. I’ve never been to Apollycon before and I’m so, so excited and honored to even be invited! I can’t wait. Plus, it’s in Florida, so the weather should be great.

Last book you read:
I’m finishing The Summer Garden by Paullina Simons right now and I’m so not ready for this story to be over. The Summer Garden is the third book in the Bronze Horseman Trilogy and it’s one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. Shura, the main male character, has quickly made his way to my top 3 favorite book characters OF ALL TIME. This trilogy is so heartbreaking and beautiful and so poetically written and the emotions just jump off of the page. I have been stalling to finish it because I’m not ready to say goodbye to Tatiana and Shura. *cries*

Last thing that made you cry:
The book I mentioned above :P During the first one, I cried  a little, it was sad, but the second and third were even worse. I’ve been tortured by this author, but I’ve loved every second of it.

Best moment as an author:
I have so many amazing moments as an author. I still can’t believe that I’m even an author! I could have never imagined my life to turn out this way and I have to pinch myself at least once a week. If I had to choose, I would say that my favorite moments are when I hear from readers that my books have made them read more, or even write their own stories. There’s nothing better to me than my words somehow inspiring someone.

Favorite place in the world:
My house. I just moved to Los Angeles from Austin and since the move, I’ve been traveling most of the time. Well, this whole year I’ve been traveling :P I love to travel and to meet so many amazing readers from around the world and I’m already filling up my schedule for next year, but I sort of forgot how much I love quiet nights in. My perfect night would be drinking wine with my husband and watching t.v.

ANNA TODD is a first-time writer spending her days in the Austin area with her husband, with whom she beat half the statistics by getting married one month after graduating high school. Between her husband's three deployments to Iraq, she worked odd jobs from a makeup counter to the IRS processing counter. Anna was always an avid reader and boy band and romance lover, so now that she’s found a way to combine the three she’s enjoying living a real-life dream come true.

TORN
A Wicked Saga #2
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Reading Level: New Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Released: July 19, 2016
Review Source: InkslingerPR

Torn between duty and survival, nothing can be the same.

Everything Ivy Morgan thought she knew has been turned on its head. After being betrayed and then nearly killed by the Prince of the Fae, she’s left bruised and devastated—and with an earth-shattering secret that she must keep at all costs. And if the Order finds out her secret, they’ll kill her.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in on Ivy, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.

The story:  Torn picks up right where Wicked left off. I will try to leave this as vague as possible to prevent any major spoilers for those that haven't started the series yet.  The book was A PAGE TURNER!  I so loved being immersed in this fascinating world again.  I loved reading about and getting to know these characters even more in book two. I've become so connected with them that they are practically family and I don't ever want the series to end.  The story is set in New Orleans and Jennifer managed to step/amp up book two when book one was already amazing!  There is more action, romance, and humor.  The Fae prince is working harder than ever to permanently open the gates connecting this world to the other world.  It's up to the order, and most importantly Ivy, to prevent that from happening.

The likes:  I love Ivy, she ends up discovering A HUGE SECRET at the end of Wicked and is forced to keep it to herself as well as deal with everything else going on in the world. She is a rock, and is completely bad ass for her strength.  AND REN!!!!!  He's everything!  I love them together. I love their love and their chemistry.  One of my favorite lines, "I loved him. God, I loved him more than I loved pralines and beignets, and that was hardcore, because my love of sugary, sweet things rivaled the most epic love stories known to man."  Ivy is definitely a girl after my own heart.  I love the banter between the characters.  My favorite character is STILL, Tink. He has so much personality and I want to stuff him in my pocket to live forever. There is so much intensity and drama in Torn, even more so than in Wicked.   It's for that reason, Jennifer is and always will be a part of my top favorite authors.

The dislikes:  This series has some predictability to it.  That's the only issue. Even with the slight predictability factor, I still LOVED it!  Also the fact that I don't have book three in my kindle!  I need that book now!

The rating:  This book gets five stars from me because from the start of book one I couldn't put these books down. It's the perfect blend of drama, love, nail-biting intensity and humor.   You will not be disappointed, I highly recommend this series!  I do, however, definitely recommend starting with book one because these books cannot be read as standalones.  To know what is going on in book two, you need to read book one.  So get on it and read this series!  Put this at the top of your TBR list.
