9 Nativity Crafts and Christmas Decorations and the Weekly Block Party Link-Up

I love Santa and snowmen, and reindeer but it's important to me to make sure that amongst all the commercial Christmas, the "Christ" part doesn't get left out.
Great Christ centered nativity Christmas crafts and decorations
Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings here and today I'm sharing 9 awesome nativity crafts and decorations for Christmas. Most of these are simple enough or durable enough that the kids can help you make them or even handle them after they are created. Rae Gun guest posting picture

Star and Nativity Appliques - Nativity in the Trees Quilt-Along - Lesson 6

Yeah!  We're almost done with our quilt tops.  Now we just need to add our Christmas Star an Nativity scene.

Uh...and can I just say...I feel really bad this didn't get posted earlier.  I had it all written up 2 weeks ago...like completely written.  It just needed the links to the templates which I totally forgot to do.  I'll admit that I bit off a bit more than I could chew heading up to Christmas, and I apologize that finishing up these instructions was one of the things I didn't get done.  I'll admit that I didn't even get my own quilt done.  It's just needed the binding added to it for about 2 months.  Anyway...on to the instructions...

If you need to review our previous lessons, you can find them here:

 Lesson 1 - Fabric Selection

Lesson 2 - Sewing Your Greens
Lesson 3 - Cutting Your Triangles

Lesson 4 - Basic Applique

Lesson 5 - Sewing Your Triangles

Lesson 6 - Advanced Machine Applique

You'll need to print out the Stable and Nativity Template from here and the Star Template from here (or you can trace directly off your computer screen) and trace onto your Heat'n Bond Lite.  You can also download and resize these pictures if you want to be able to fiddle with the sizing.  If you want the sizing to be the same that I used, click on the PDF files above.

When you trace an image onto Heat'n Bond, it will end up being a mirror image when you put it on your quilt, so keep that in mind if you want Mary or Joseph on a particular side of the stable.  Here I'm tracing with Joseph on the left so in the finished quilt, he will be on the right.

Sewing Your Triangles - Nativity in the Trees Quilt-Along - Lesson 5

Oh, goodness!  I can't believe it took me so long to get this lesson up.  I knew I was getting behind, but thought it had only been a week or two.  I was a little appalled to realize that it has actually been three week.  Once Thanksgiving hit, all of a sudden orders started pouring (well, I will definitely get the next one up in just a day or two, so we can all get them finished in time for Christmas.

If you need to review our previous lessons, you can find them here:

 Lesson 1 - Fabric Selection

Lesson 2 - Sewing Your Greens
Lesson 3 - Cutting Your Triangles

Lesson 4 - Basic Applique

Lesson 5 - Sewing Your Triangles

Lesson 6 - Advanced Machine Applique

So let's get started sewing our triangles together!

Cutting Your Triangles - Nativity in the Trees Quilt-Along - Lesson 3

I had hoped to get this Lesson up by Saturday, but I had several deadlines converge and got a little behind.  Fortunately, this is the biggest lesson, so from here on out, they should come faster.

Are you ready to cut your triangles?  If you're just now joining us, be sure to check out our other lessons here:

 Lesson 1 - Fabric Selection

Lesson 2 - Sewing Your Greens
Lesson 3 - Cutting Your Triangles

Lesson 4 - Basic Applique

Lesson 5 - Sewing Your Triangles

Lesson 6 - Advanced Machine Applique

Before we'll be ready to cut out our triangles, we're going to need to add some angle markings to your ruler.  I decided to make the angle at the tip of the triangle thinking we could use the angles already marked on our ruler...but it turns out we need to measure the angles at the bottom of our triangle.  None of the typical angle markings would give the look I wanted, so I just added my own.  And the good news for you, is that the lines are really easy to add using this template.

Painted Fabric Nativity Scene Tutorial

I've got a whole tutorial for this project in this post...but first you've got to hear the background (or you can skip down to where it says "Materials" in large print.)

Our family enjoys lots of different kinds of Christmas decorations (Santa, snowmen, gingerbread men, etc), but for the decorations I spend time making, I prefer decorations that focus on the Nativity.  Last year at Christmas, I fell in love with this Nativity Painting that Dana from MADE showed as part of her holiday decor.

Nativity Blocks

My kids LOVE these Nativity blocks.

We have a breakable Nativity set that lives up high on a shelf, but these are indestructible and fun to play with.  So we cleared out the bottom shelf of the kids' bookshelf for them, so the star can live up one shelf and shine over Baby Jesus.
They're also hard to get a good picture of because as soon as I start to arange them for a picture, the kids come in and HAVE to play with them RIGHT now.

Of course Baby Jesus is Sweet Pea's favorite.

And that's Firecracker behind her stacking them to compare how many pieces we have of each size.
I made these quite a while ago, long before I'd started or even heard of craft blogs.  My mom first got the idea at a Christmas Craft Day at church.  I borrowed her set to copy them for our family and to make as gifts several years ago.  The original set had Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, The Three Wise Men, a shepard, and two sheep.  Then two years ago, I added the angel, donkey, camel, and star because we still had a few extra blocks left over.  The blocks are just 2x4's that were cut, sanded, and stained.  Then I traced the design in pencil, painted them with acrylic paint, and then used a black paint pen to go over the lines.  (That makes the images stand out and also helps to cover any small mistakes made when you painted.

Because I made these long before I was blogging, I don't have a printable pattern for them, but I did scan the blocks themselves in using our scanner, so even though they're not very printable, you could trace them off yoru computer screen.

NOTE:

I forgot to include the lengths of the blocks initially.  Most of them are 8 1/2 inches tall. Mary is 7 in. Baby Jesus is 5 in. The sheep are 4 in. The donkey is on a longer one because that's what I had and didn't want to go cut the wood again, but he could be on one a little shorter.

Here is the link to a PDF in Google Documents that you can download to get the Nativity Blocks pattern here. I just put the blocks on my scanner and scanned them in, so it's in full color.

I also recently saw an idea of felt nativity finger puppets at the Craft Patch.  Anybody else have some Nativity related craft ideas?  I'm always looking for more.

You can see a round up of my Christmas posts from last year here.
