1 May 2013: Congressman Melvin L. "Mel" Watt (Democratic), who was first elected in 1992, was nominated to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency. 10 December 2013: Congressman Melvin L. "Mel" Watt is confirmed as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. 6 January 2014: Resigned from Congress. 6 January 2014: Governor Patrick "Pat" McCrory (Republican) calls a Special Election to fill the vacant seat of Congressman Melvin L. "Mel" Watt (Democratic). The dates for the special election coincide with the regularly scheduled 2014 elections: 6 May 2014: Special Primary. 15 July 2014: Special Secondary Primary (if necessary). If no candidate receives 40% of the vote in a primary, the two leading candidates proceed to a run off. 4 November 2014: State Representative Alma Shealey Adams (Democratic) wins the concurrent general and special elections. |
