About M.J.:

Growing up in Ontario, Canada, MJ was the only child of a single mom. MJ’s passion for the arts ignited at a young age as she wrote adventure stories and read them aloud to close family and friends. The dramatic arts became a focus in high school as an aid to understanding character motivation in her writing. Majoring in Theatre Production at University, with a minor in English, she went on to teach both elementary and high school for 10 years throughout Simcoe County.

MJ currently lives with her husband and young son in Caledon, Ontario. Mitch is a sweet on the inside, tough on the outside cowboy working at a dude ranch as lead wrangler, barn manager, and more. When a beautiful red-head from NYC turns his life upside down, Mitch will do anything to win her heart. Country sweet falls hard for a little city spice.

Mitch, well suited for the physical demands of a life spent outdoors, is tall, tan, and lean. But his eyes are his most noticeable feature: bright golden brown and friendly.

When hauling hay, leading rides across the open meadows, or rescuing stray cows, Mitch relies on his music to get through the day. His top five country favorites follow:

1.        Eric Church – Homeboy

Mitch had some problems as a Texas teen after his parents’ divorce. He ended up in trouble and was banished to the outskirts of Boston to live with his dad. “Homeboy” by Eric Church reminds Mitch that now he is right where he needs to be. He’s a country boy through and through and the dude ranch is his life.

2.      Chris Stapleton – Parachute

Mitch can tell there is something different about Alexis from the moment they meet, and he wants to find out more, much more, about her. Once he falls, this song represents his emotions. Mitch plans to capture Alexis’ heart and convince her their love will be epic. He’s the man who stays strong for Alexis during the best and worst of times.

3.      Brantley Gilbert-- Kick It In The Sticks

Mitch might have lived in the city for a while, but he’s a country boy and knows how to kick back and relax. He’s going to be sure to show Alexis a good time.

4.     Jason Aldean – Big Green Tractor

This song nails the different worlds Mitch and Alexis live in, but also where they meet in the middle. It doesn’t matter how different people are at the start. It’s much more important where they end up together.  

5.     Johnny Cash – Five Feet Highand Rising

The song is a classic and it’s Johnny Cash. “Five Feet High and Rising” shows how perseverance, determination, and faith pay off. As Cash said, “...good things come from adversity…” Mitch lives that. 

Alexis’ Playlist

Alexis is a little city spice. Mitch is country sweet. The rugged cowboy works at a dude ranch as lead wrangler, barn manager, and more. Can Mitch turn this over-achieving city slicker into a country girl?

When dealing with tough clients at the marketing firm in NYC where she works, riding across the open meadows, or rescuing stray cows, Alexis relies on music to get through the day. Her top four favorite songs follow:

A little city

1.        Dua Lipa – New Rules

Alexa is a fiery red head who doesn’t let a man control her, but Mitch finds a way into her heart. Can this couple conquer the city or country conundrum? 

2.      Keith Urban with Carrie Underwood – Fighter

The song itself transcends genre lines just like Alexis and Mitch’s attraction. Hopefully, they will both fight for something that seems so perfect.

A little country

3.      Sam Hunt – Body Like aBackroad

Sounds like a country boy falls for a city girl in this one too. Mitch is going to be sure to show Alexis a good time.

4.     John Pardi – Dirt on my Boots

This song nails the different worlds Mitch and Alexis live in, but also where they meet in the middle. It doesn’t matter how different people are at the start. It’s much more important where they end up.

Book Playlist:

I always bite my lip when this blog topic is offered—this’ll prove to you what a total nerd I am. But before I share my playlist, I must tender my own defense: first, I don’t have to commute to the office so very little time is spent in my car, unless commuting involves walking to and from the shower and the closet that houses my Superman T-shirt collection and the coffee pot; second, at the gym, I’m too busy talking to my buddies to listen to music (yes, I’m one of THOSE people who talks at the gym—come on, where else do I have human contact, except with my doctor who is always telling me I’m fine and “no, you don’t have a tiny alien living in your head causing those headaches you should just go for a walk”?); and lastly, when I’m writing, I cannot listen to any music with lyrics because then I will sing along, and that is the opposite of good. Adele I am not. As such, forgive me—I don’t typically listen to pop music. (*ducks as people throw mushy tomatoes*)

Sure, if I’m in a bookstore or coffee shop and something catchy is playing, I’ll say to my very hip daughter, “Hey, Very Hip Daughter, what is that music and where can I get more of it?” But the honest truth? Movie scores are my one true musical love.

It’s fair to say that a hundred percent of the playlist music I listen to while writing is from movies, and nearly all of that is from the instrumental score. There are exceptions—I’ve been turned on to lots of bands through movie soundtracks. Imogen Heap, Muse, Woodkid, Ingrid Michaelson, Florence + The Machine, Iron & Wine, Ellie Goulding, Sia. (OH, I love Sia.) Pretty much all the music I “discover” wiggles its way into my iTunes account because it was played as accompaniment to a story unfolding on the screen. Because if you haven’t figured it out—I LOVE MOVIES.

So, in the spirit of introducing YOU, the agile-minded reader, to Really Fantastic Movie Scores, here are my top ten favorites that I listen to on repeat. Scores are terrifically helpful when I need to get into the headspace to write, and this has been especially true with SLEIGHT:

Oops. That was eleven—in all seriousness, I could’ve given you a hundred amazing scores. Picking my favorites is near impossible because I love multiple works from all these composers—it’s like picking my favorite child (my favorite child is the cat—don’t tell the human kids). I can say with confidence that MAN OF STEEL is my absolute favorite, with WONDER WOMAN a close second. (I sense a theme here …) When friends need good writing music, they message me for recommendations because they know I’m over-the-moon nuts about movie music. I’m always on the lookout for inspiring, powerful instrumentals that can serve as the backdrop for whatever book I’m working on. Sure, the movie is great, but what about that soundtrack?

Next time you’re at the movies—other than saving me a seat so we can eat popcorn together but you are NOT allowed to talk to me during the film or I will dump the popcorn over your head—close your eyes and listen to the magic going on behind the pictures. Pretty awesome, yeah? Music is so powerful, in whatever shape it takes. It really is the soundtrack to this mortal life!
