About M.J.:

Growing up in Ontario, Canada, MJ was the only child of a single mom. MJ’s passion for the arts ignited at a young age as she wrote adventure stories and read them aloud to close family and friends. The dramatic arts became a focus in high school as an aid to understanding character motivation in her writing. Majoring in Theatre Production at University, with a minor in English, she went on to teach both elementary and high school for 10 years throughout Simcoe County.

MJ currently lives with her husband and young son in Caledon, Ontario. She keeps busy these days with her emerging authors’ website Infinite Pathways: hosting writing contests, providing editing services, free publicity tips, book reviews, and opportunities for authors to build their writing platform and portfolio. 1.        Eric Church – Homeboy

Mitch had some problems as a Texas teen after his parents’ divorce. He ended up in trouble and was banished to the outskirts of Boston to live with his dad. “Homeboy” by Eric Church reminds Mitch that now he is right where he needs to be. He’s a country boy through and through and the dude ranch is his life.

2.      Chris Stapleton – Parachute

Mitch can tell there is something different about Alexis from the moment they meet, and he wants to find out more, much more, about her. Once he falls, this song represents his emotions. Mitch plans to capture Alexis’ heart and convince her their love will be epic. He’s the man who stays strong for Alexis during the best and worst of times.

3.      Brantley Gilbert-- Kick It In The Sticks

Mitch might have lived in the city for a while, but he’s a country boy and knows how to kick back and relax. He’s going to be sure to show Alexis a good time.

4.     Jason Aldean – Big Green Tractor

This song nails the different worlds Mitch and Alexis live in, but also where they meet in the middle. It doesn’t matter how different people are at the start. It’s much more important where they end up together.  

5.     Johnny Cash – Five Feet Highand Rising

The song is a classic and it’s Johnny Cash. “Five Feet High and Rising” shows how perseverance, determination, and faith pay off. As Cash said, “...good things come from adversity…” Mitch lives that. 

Alexis’ Playlist

Alexis is a little city spice. Mitch is country sweet. The rugged cowboy works at a dude ranch as lead wrangler, barn manager, and more. Can Mitch turn this over-achieving city slicker into a country girl?

When dealing with tough clients at the marketing firm in NYC where she works, riding across the open meadows, or rescuing stray cows, Alexis relies on music to get through the day. Her top four favorite songs follow:

1.        Dua Lipa – New Rules

Alexa is a fiery red head who doesn’t let a man control her, but Mitch finds a way into her heart. Can this couple conquer the city or country conundrum? 

2.      Keith Urban with Carrie Underwood – Fighter

The song itself transcends genre lines just like Alexis and Mitch’s attraction. Hopefully, they will both fight for something that seems so perfect.

A little country

3.      Sam Hunt – Body Like aBackroad

Sounds like a country boy falls for a city girl in this one too. Mitch is going to be sure to show Alexis a good time.

4.     John Pardi – Dirt on my Boots

This song nails the different worlds Mitch and Alexis live in, but also where they meet in the middle. It doesn’t matter how different people are at the start. It’s much more important where they end up.

Some notes on the playlist:

Like most of my book playlists, this one is eclectic: some of the songs convey a mood or theme, others help me establish the setting or characters.

To start with, “I of the Storm,” by Of Monsters and Men is Anna’s theme song, as she grapples with her shadows and demons in the aftermath of BLOOD ROSE REBELLION.

Coldplay’s “Spies” echoes in fun ways the conspiracies that run through the book (and the book’s title!)

Ruelle’s “Monsters” speaks to a recurring theme in LOST CROW CONSPIRACY: what is a monster? And how do we confront what is monstrous in ourselves?

The fourth song, Johann Strauss’s Zeitgeister is a waltz published just prior to the period of the novel and would have been a likely choice at any of the balls Anna attends in Vienna.

Goran Bregovićs haunting “Ederlezi” is a popular Romani folksong from the Balkan region. It’s not a song that Gábor or his contemporaries would have known, as it was written during World War II, but it has roots in the haunting Romani folksongs Gábor would have been familiar with. The title “Ederlezi” references a Romani celebration of St. George’s day—though in this case, the title carries dual weight, as St. George’s day (May 6^th) was also the day a train carried cars of Romani prisoners from Sarajevo to German concentration camps.

Faure’s “Pavanne,” with its otherworldly melodies speaks to both the human and praetherian magic in the story.

The next couple of songs are for my second point of view: one of Anna’s cousins and one of my favorite voices to write. Scott Stapp’s “Dying to Live” will make sense in context of the story (I don’t want to spoil anything) and Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades.”

Passenger’s “Blooddstains” echoes the bittersweet arc of the romance in LOST CROW—plus, the album is called Flight of the Crow, so how could I pass that up?

Both Hozier’s “Arsonist’s Lullaby” and Of Monsters and Men’s “Wolves Without 

Teeth” are for some of my praetheria, both dangerous and beautiful: Zhivka and Vasilisa.

The final two songs—Twenty-one Pilot’s “Truce” and 2WEI’s “Survivor” capture the feeling at the end of this middle book in my trilogy: fighting to survive against daunting odds.

I had fun putting this together—hopefully readers enjoy it too!
