Grateful

Here in Australia we are all just so grateful to have our families and friends safe. Our whole nation is in mourning with the families in America who sadly are going through the most difficult times of their lives. Nothing could prepare anyone for this. Just so much sadness.  We send our love to everyone involved.
Today because we are all so sad I thought I would share with you some beautiful flowers I photographed in my mum’s garden on Sunday. Somehow the busyness and bustle of Christmas has been placed on the back burner while we all battle to take in the horror of these last few days.

High Tea

I had the most gorgeous afternoon on Friday. I attended a High Tea which was a fund raising event for cancer research. The day was in memory of a beautiful soul who lost her life earlier this year. She was just 39 years old. One hundred and fifty ladies(and a few men) had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect, the food delicious and the garden unbelievable. Please share these photos of the afternoon with me.

All the waitresses wore these cute aprons they had sewn with our dear friend, Peta’s name embroided on the pocket.
Such a wonderful memories of such a vibrant person.

Update on the patio

Mr FH and I had a couple of nights at the beach house on the weekend. Mind you, I needed it after a trip to the endodontist on Friday! My worst fear in the world is going to the dentist and it looks like I’m in for some extensive treatment on a tooth over the next 6 months!!! Not something I’m looking forward to but while we were there we started our ‘after winter, get ready for summer clean’. You know what it’s like – cobwebs and dry leaves everywhere but it’s amazing how much better it looks in just a short while.
During the winter months I had brought home a mat I had outside (which was very dull and boring) and decided to attack it with a paint brush! I am just so pleased with the results! Talk about a metamorphosis.

The ‘before’ picture!!

Here it is looking very plain and unloved. This is a cushion off the outdoor lounge I was using for inspiration.

I spent ages taping stripes on the mat. Actually that was quite easy as the mat already had some very fine lines on it. I used an old toothbrush to paint with to start with then it was really trial and error. Most of the paints were bits I mixed from old tins, craft paint and some school paint. The red was the only one I needed to buy.

Now this is starting to get a little exciting!!! Lovely straight lines. Mind you, they weren’t all like this. I did have to paint a few ‘extras’ in just to straighten things up a little.
IMG_5127a
What a difference!!! After I finished painting I sealed the whole mat to make sure my hard work didn’t all wash away in the first shower of rain!
IMG_5128a
Even Mr FH commented it was a perfect match! Most of the time he never notices anything I do!

Ready for summer! I just need to clean some windows and spray around to get rid of spiders and sit back and enjoy!

PS. You might notice a little frog on the table…I hate frogs but my little grandsons just love this little fellow left by the previous owners!

Pottery Barn Clock Plates

Oh my goodness…..I have fallen in love with Susan’s (Between Naps on the Porch) Pottery Barn inspired clock plates she posted about today. I will have my eyes peeled for some clear melamine plates to make some of those. We don’t have a Pottery Barn here in Australia so I just drool over some of the gorgeous eye candy I see on their web sight.
Any way, back to this weeks table. We had a lovely warm day over the weekend (it is raining now though so we are loving that!) so it was a great chance to set a table on the verandah.

I love the combination of purple and green but usually I use a dark purple but this week’s table started with a cloth I use at the gift shop for displays. As you can see the colours are really a purply/blue tone but I still love it with the bright spring-like green. I’m loving my polka dot plates too!. The wine glasses are acrylic (and very old!!) but to me they were a perfect match.

Sunny winter afternoon

We are still having some cool nights and recently when I was too lazy to set the fire and feeling cold I grabbed a shaggy quilt I had made a few years ago. Isn’t it funny how sometimes we look at things differently….I suddenly saw this quilt as a table cloth!!  I love the gorgeous earthy colours so I thought it would be perfect for an outdoor tablescape.  I didn’t need a lot of other colour so I chose to use mocha colour tableware and napkins. Cream flatware and a wooden trug full of matching cups and saucers finished off the table.  Such nice weather…we are screaming (yes, literally, screaming!) out for rain but it just doesn’t seem to come. We are preparing a lot of our sheep ready to sell as we don’t have any feed for them for the summer so things are going to get a little busy.  Lucky we are able to drift of to blogland for a bit of inspiration!!
