Swedish Researchers Find Test For Predicting Alzheimer's
[From article]
simple blood test to identify if men have lost crucial genetic material in later life could finally close the gap in life expectancy between men and women, scientists believe.
New research shows that when men lose their Y sex chromosome they are hundreds of times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
Previous research has shown that smoking hugely increases the risk of losing the Y chromosome, suggesting that the missing genetic material may also be linked to cancer.
It is thought that Y chromosome is crucial for the normal function of the immune system and without it the body struggles to eliminate cancerous cells, and amyloid plaques in the brain which cause Alzheimer’s disease.
Now scientists at Uppsala University in Sweden have found it is possible to test for loss of the chromosome in a breakthrough which could lead to widespread screening which could pick up which men are at risk so that early health interventions could be made.
"The addition of testing in the general population could give medical practitioners the possibility of using preventive strategies in men at risk,” said lead author Prof Lars Forsberg of Uppsala University.

Although there are presently no cures for Alzhiemer’s disease it is known that lifestyle changes such as eating well, exercising, and brain training can ward off early symptoms if spotted early.

The findings were published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

Ann Coulter Explains Republican Pundits
[From article]
The cluelessness of the GOP pundit class is infuriating, but may ultimately be our salvation. Nothing they say about anything is ever right, even accidentally.
This is making the TV news shows resemble Monty Python’s “Upperclass Twit of the Year” contest. The twits don’t notice the starting gun, run into one another, fall down, run themselves over with their own cars and, then, the remaining contestants all shoot themselves in the head.
[. . .]
If you tuned into ABC’S “This Week” the morning after Trump’s tremendous victory in South Carolina, you’d find George Stephanopoulos promising analysis from a “powerhouse roundtable,” by which I assume he was referring to the table itself.
[. . .]
If you cut out words from a magazine and randomly pasted them on a piece of paper, you would produce a better analysis of what is happening in this election than anything said by [Sara] Fagen.

Chimps throwing darts at a dictionary would be right more often. Why are these people still allowed in the building? The FCC ought to force the TV networks into a massive settlement for promoting snake oil salesmen.
If I were a career counselor, I’d tell my students to become “Republican strategists.” You can be terrible at what you do — and the phone will never stop ringing! In no other profession, even fields that require a fair amount of speculation like oil wildcatting or weather forecasting, can you be so consistently wrong and never lose work.
After Trump’s huge victory in New Hampshire and then in South Carolina, did it occur to TV bookers to call any of the people who got it right?
[. . .]
In the Nevada primary on Tuesday, Trump not only won the Hispanic vote; he not only won 17 points more of the Hispanic vote than his next closest rival; but his Latino vote nearly matched that of the two Latino candidates combined.
In one of the few times you might have heard this point expressed on television airwaves, [Alex] Marlow said that the No. 1 issue for Breitbart News’ 20 million readers, “has consistently been — since last year —immigration. They are looking for someone who is going to seal the border and prioritize border security as No. 1.”
Obviously, Marlow was right about everything. According to Nexis, that was the last time he appeared on TV.

Harvard and Northwestern University Researchers Develop Test To Predict Cancer 13 Years Before It Appears
[From article]
Genetic changes can predict cancer up to 13 years in the future, according to new research.
Harvard and Northwestern University discovered that tiny but significant changes are already happening in the body more than a decade before cancer is diagnosed.
They found that the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, which prevent DNA damage, had significantly more wear and tear in people who went on to develop cancer. In fact, in some cases they looked 15 years older.
Those caps, known as telomeres, were much shorter than they should be and continued to get shorter until around four years before the cancer developed, when they suddenly stopped shrinking. All the people with the changes went on to develop cancer.

Conservative MP Warned UK About Multiculturalism, 44 Years Ago
[From article]
A Conservative MP has said that Enoch Powell was right to warn that "non-Christian" immigration would cause social problems. In a letter to a constituent, Sir Gerald Howarth said that the recent Trojan Horse scandal showed that some of these immigrants have a different "ethos" to Christian schools, and that the government is right to intervene to stop them teaching their ideology to British students.
Earlier this year, 21 schools in Birmingham were investigated over an alleged takeover by Islamist extremists. Subsequent reports found that a small group of individuals had tried to impose a strict interpretation of Islam on the officially secular schools.

Are You Sure?
In a related story a majority of Harvard University faculty declared that ice is usually cold. "You can bet on it," asserted Divinity School Professor Diane Eck.
