Another song translation for all of you. This is the 5th song from my favorite OPM band, the real, genuine, original OPM band I truly admire up until this day.

I was still a little kid when an uncle of mine introduced Asin songs. (Asin by the say means salt)

The story of the song is related to a blob, a dot, a period, just a peck of something, a nebula (remember the big bang theory.) In fact, the song mentioned about the sun, which is known as the center of the universe yet if we only take time to realize it, the sun, as big and as powerful as it is, is just a dot.

We, the human race, regardless of our economic, social or political status, have an equalizer and that, according to this song is our existence compared to a "dot"!

I have this co-worker who always brag about being a graduate of a private school well-known in our country.  Probably the oldest catholic school in this country.  I wonder why she has to do that not counting in mind that somebody else in the workplace came from the same university and probably finished a better course than hers.

I have a favorite phrase I picked up from my Philosophy teacher back in college: "All form, no substance!" Although I am not referring to her (my co-workers' treatment towards fellow workers who are undergraduate, not as rich as her or as beautiful as her or bright as her) but that is what I want to call her actuations and attitude.

Thanks for this song, I played while she is beside me... it's as if I had the time of my life right this moment. haha!

We were in the house of a pediatrician the other day when this song played.

I can't help but notice how the doctor reacted to it's tune and lyrics so I thought, this could be nice.

Hearing the song, I was saddened because it talks about parting ways... after the love has gone. The doctor is inlove but couldn't make it up because of a very pressing situation. I think medical field is a very busy profession. Now, I realized that most of the doctors here in the Philippines inter-marry, meaning there are a lot of doctor couples. It must be a tight relationship or perhaps they are just too busy in their profession that they find it hard to find love interest outside their field.

That's a good sign though because the couple will be able to share their interest or ideals even friends who are in the same field.

At the onset of medicine practitioners enrolling in nursing school I wonder if both, the couple, would like to be classmates and become a nurse. Geesh, I don't know what I am talking about here. I don't know also what is the meaning of this song's lyrics. All I know is that the singers want to say goodbye, no third part whatsoever, just goodbye.

This is one OPM rap I loved eversince I first heard it over a radio station. We haven't changed presidents back then so I thought this is a good reference to a politician who knows nothing but to spend public funds for personal use and personal gains!

I am trying to translate it but my mind is preoccupied for the moment. Let me just write down the lyrics and try to translate some words or at least give you the meaning of the words as they are used in the song.

Upuan - is a chair, referred to the executive chair either local or national
Tao po - literally translated is: "person" + po which is a Filipino word signifying respect
- this phrase is normally used when you go to another house that has no doorbell so we yell "tao po" a gesture for the person inside the house that we either want to go inside, or ask them something or to give them a letter etc. So my translation below is "knock knock!" which signifies that a person wants to come in.
Barong - is the national costume for males here in the Philippines.

Oh well, looking at the status of my country right now, with the current president who is equally rich but more down to earth than the previous one -- I am just worried about this new found hope in our new president because of all the wealth that was amassed or stolen or unwisely spent by the previous administration, it would not be too difficult for them to make this president disappear with just a snap of a finger.

That chair in that palace is really so powerful but if you (Mr. President) are not too careful yourself, especially that you have expressed your disgust and dismay over the past administration, they can use all the money they got in destroying your current career. So be careful... we should all be careful and guard our ranks. (This is what I learn from my activist friends ;-))

As an Ilonga who was raised in Canada since the age of 4 (and so barely understands Ilonggo, and even less of Tagalog, much less of 'old' Tagalog), I am wondering if you have done other translations (from 'old' Tagalog to English) of Joey's songs, or any other most meaningful Filipino songs?

I would really like somehow to learn the 'deep Tagalog' (and deep Ilonggo too, if there is such a thing) as a way to understand/remain connected to my Filipino heritage. For now, if I could at least understand the meaning of these incredible songs, that would be a really welcome start.

If you could direct me to more of your Filipino translations (and/or to anyone else who might be willing to do something similar for Ilonggo), I would be so grateful.

So you probably have heard or seen from youtube the advertisement of Senator Noynoy Aquino and living true to the new advocacy of this blog, I am giving you my own translation of this song. As always, I mixed the literal and the "summary" way of translating a Tagalog song to English. There are tagalog words that sounds awkward when translated in english (i.e. sama-sama where "sama" mean "join" or "come" and I used "we will come together" instead.) I hope it made sense and if you think there is the better way of translating it, I'm more than glad to accept your corrections. Anyway, above if the english translation of the song Hindi Ka Nag-iisa ("You are not alone", which reminded me of Michael Jackson).

You will notice from the advertisement some big stars. This is their way of showing support to Noynoy Aquino. The latter decided on taking the Presidential bet after some prodding from his allies. Of course, we all know that Senator Noynoy is the son of the former Senator Ninoy Aquino and the late President Cory Aquino. (It gives me goosebumps as I write this particular entry). The rest of the story is history.

Writing about the Aquinos means so much to me because I cannot help but recall my childhood days. Those are the days I thought that the real hero was Marcos. I actually equated him with some god or something, not really understanding the things of the past. It's not that I've grown to be anti-Marcos. I am not and I will not because I also recognize the good things he did to our country. Besides, he was once a president of this country and perhaps I would write another blog entry for him.

So going back to the Aquinos, particularly Ninoy and Cory, they are heroes to a lot of Filipinos. I still recall what Cory said in one interview. She said something like: "I thank God for making me a Filipino and be able to experience what it's like to be a Filipino" or something like that. To me, that sounded like the Christ giving thanks to God for making him human and at the same time, giving him the cup of suffering. That, I should say is what the Aquinos did. They had a lot of sacrifices for the Filipino people and they continue to do so, even at the point of death.

Now, their "only son" is running for Philippine presidency, as if they haven't done everything yet for the country. I truly admire this family, most especially the late president, for her religiosity and sincerity to help. Her life was such a blessing and a model for all Filipinos, for all mothers, for all women, and is worthy to be emulated by our politicians, especially the loud ones. She will always be special to me, being the first woman president in Asia, and the one I truly admire. I will never forget the pride she brought back to us when she stood firm to prove that a plain housewife can unite the country, lead it and gather the respect of the US politicians as she delivered her speech in the US Congress.

I translated the song Isang Lahi because I love its message, other than of course, I love singing it when we have our videoke sessions.

I am always tearful when I hear news about racism or see people who think they should be recognized as superior than others. It is also sad for me that people identify themselves as inferior in relation to others. I told you about an incident in Manila when we attended the Bar ops. Our "camp" was beside a school based in Manila. We were from the province and we seated so close to each other and this lady started blobbing and shouting at us saying we shouldn't stay beside their "camp". I asked myself why? Maybe it's because they are one of the institutions of Law School in our country but the heck! We stood on our ground and we stayed there. Their enlightened chairman approached us and apologized for the actuation of the lady. We were comforted and we set the tone down and dwell in that same place in harmony. We even offered each other food during the lunch break.

The grudge is still there, however, cool-head empowered us. We just placed in our head that indeed there are un-enlighted people whether rich or poor, educated or not.

Ahh, I am getting out of topic I think. My point is, we should not compare ourselves with others. We just have to cool down our heads, pull all wits together and talk thins over. We should not be overwhelmed with prejudice that this person does not understand us because he belongs to a particular race and that race is known to be so and so. Oh, which reminds me of my own prejudice that I though lawyers, or law students at least, has a badge of high distinction because they are well-educated. I was wrong because of what that lady did to us. Ahhh! I can't help but be lonely and sad of what's going on with people lately.

So I am sharing with you this song and I hope that time of realization that we are ONE RACE is nearing.

It was getting dark and the water level was almost knee-high. It continues to rise and then we started to put our things to higher grounds.

We spent the night hauling and carrying anything and everything that we can save even before the water rises God-knows-up-to-what-level.

I stayed awake until I heard somebody, it was my dad I think, who woke up early and did nothing but observed the devastation outside.
The water was still waist-high inside the house, while it was beck-high outside. I can't help but stand in awe, in sadness, bearing in mind
the people who did not have shelter or means to provide food for their children. This is nature's response against our desire to civilization, or so I thought.

When we remain uncaring stewards our environment, this happens. After typhoon Ondoy in Manila, here is typhoon Pepeng in Northern Luzon. What is earth doing to us?
Mother earth is just responding to how we have treated her for the past centuries and we still continue to disregard her. Is there hope?

All I can think of right now is... when will we ever learn? This problem is getting so complicated and to simplify things, of which I am sure I can react, is to do a simple act of goodness to nature and to other people like the basics: keep your surroundings clean and offer help.

This song was such a hit. Hitting the airwaves during that time was phenomenal because it talks about family values. The joy of parents in bringing us into this world but later on, we go astray. What a frustration it would be for them.

Indeed, this song served as a warning for me and those of my age because we were at the prime of our youth when this song was popularized. I don't want to hurt my parents, I was sure I made a conviction on that. I guess I haven't failed my parents yet... although, I haven't been of much help to their current problems.

When I was still a little kid, my family and I stayed in a big house. That was the ancestral house of my dad's side of the family. It was somewhat a modern house. I will not be blogging about the house but about the monkeys you see on the left of your screen.

My aunt used to have a tiny metal cast depicting the same picture, the same image you see here. I was curious and later on found out that it meant "hear, see, speak no evil". That's what I will always remember about those monkeys although sometimes, they refer to it as the naughty kids like us. The older folks would always say, this is you, and your brother, and somebody else. Now, after learning about Charles Darwin, what I though was a tease, had in fact a scientific basis. For the evolution theory, I leave it to the scientists.

To conitnue with my story. I thought it was an image of monkeys being ashamed to show they faces in full view. That's just it! Growing up, however, reminds me of this figure -that it is better to zip your lips if you have nothing to say; better close your eyes if what's in front of you is disgusting; and shut your ears if you hear others are just gossiping. Life could be easier.

You have to close your eyes, shut your ears and zip your lips at the right time but it doesn't mean you remain dumb of the wrong things going on around you. Now, that is the role of your brain and make those bones and muscles move! Life could have been easier, simpler, happier, you think?

I have always admired Joey Albert, other than she will always remind me of my Aunt (who is in the US right now), because of her voice and the message of her songs.
This is one OPM song I enjoy singing because it is an epitome of a true love that really waits.

This one talks about an endless love -loving a person no matter what. To wait is the message; about fate bringing them back, closer together. It says: "there's a time we need to part" either physically or figuratively. Have you ever felt cold when you are in a relationship? The coldness that meant no sweet-nothings, not even a goodnight kiss nor "I love yous" on the phone. Those are the times we want some space, the couple has to part, albeit in thoughts.

After the space, after the coldness, sweet romances set in. That's a good experience I think, you agree? That is like receiving flowers or chocolates from someone special, for the first time. It has the same level as feeling that first kiss, that first twinkle in the eye, that "love at first sight"... Ahhh... I hate talking about romance and relationships in times like this that its raining but I'm longing. huhuhu!

All the while I thought Quezon City day is August 29 but my friend told me, today is the day! At the beginning of this month, I mentioned that I shall be blogging about my favorite OPM songs as my way of giving honor to President Manuel Luis Quezon, the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth; and president who encouraged widespread use of Filipino or Tagalog dialect as a major Philippine language. His single goal: to unite the archepelagic country at least in one major language.

He somehow achieved that because "Tagalog" has now evolved to "Filipino" as new words and borrowed terms are widely used these days. In fact, the word "university" meaning an institution for higher learning, has now an accepted Filipino term of "unibersidad" or "pamantasan" and can be used interchangeably.

There was a time that when a Filipino speaks the English language, it won't convey a clear meaning because it was "carabao english". I really don't know how the term came about but it only means that a person says "Why are you eat tinapay naman?" When what was actually meant was "Why are you eating bread?" Sentences like that. It was really the first phase of Filipinos trying to learn and adopt the English language.

At the height of glabalization and international competitivenes in the outsourcing business, Filipinos have learned to speak English being a booming "call center country". Now, speaking English is a must in order to receive a decent paycheck as a call center agent. I wonder how the OPM singers and language advocates react to that? For me, that is a fine choice because it's truly an advantage to be able to communicate with freinds and relatives from English-speaking countries.

Oh well, here goes the song and my English translation:

Tayoy Mga Pinoy - Heber Bartolome

I call this a classic song because Mike Hanopol is practically one of the pillars of the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) upon which I anchored my mini-thesis back in college. I enrolled in a Communication subject which is a Filipino communication project. I remember my teacher there at UP baguio who handled this subject. She is difficult to miss because she is very sweet and someone who would always bring out the best in her students. She is Ms. Anguluan. This class with her is also memorable for me because I sat on the same classroom with the now famous TV Commercial Model/car racing champion Karen Navarette-Anton.

This was a subject that made me fall for my native language all the more. I was able to express my feelings more with the help and encouragement of my teacher. She'd always invite us to express our thoughts, our opinions and recitation time with her was without pressure. I really miss that.

This singer, is one of the reasons why OPM is very much alive today. The list of artist who contributed to the industry is long and I will just name some of them: Heber Bartolome, Pepe Smith, Nanette Inventor, APO Hiking Society, Leah Navarro (my mom would proudly say that she taught Leah in elementary), Florante, Freddie Aguilar (Famous for the song "Anak") and many more.

HUBAD - literally means naked but I put the word "topless" because generally, the song speaks of a guy and a guy who is "hubad" is someone who is shirts-off, just the shirt.

I can't help the tears forming at the corner of my eyes when once again I've seen footage of that historic event before and after 1986 EDSA Revolution. This footage or the video that I cited after this post, is usually seen during the months of February, when the famous EDSA Revolution took place, and the month of August when we commemorate the assassination of Ninoy Aquino.

Today, 3:18AM Philippine time, the icon of democracy, the Firt Lady President, the housewife of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino, the epitome of unity and faith, Ex- President Corazon "Cory" Aquino passed away. This is such a sad day for us Filipinos.

Viewing TV tributes to the late president, I can't help but cry for two reasons: because of the sad reality that after the administration of Cory, the Philippines has not progressed that much; secondly, I am happy because a lady president is instrumental in the achievement of democracy in our country. Madam Cory just embody some part of me: the feminist, nationalist and at some length religious. (I am a choir member here in one of the parishes.)

I would like to remember her as the mother, not only of the Philippines but of democracy. I would like to share with you this song made popular by local artists after the "bloodless revolution" in 1986.

I intend to write about Tagalog songs this month, my desire was intensified as my tribute to the late madam president Cory.

This Original Pilipino Music (OPM) has been at the tip of my tongue since I started blogging about music. I am just having second thoughts becuase, first of all, I am not sure if I can translate the song in English without really losing its meaning. Secondly, I have already blogged a nationalistic theme (Sabi Nila) in these site. I might leave the impression that I am an activist. I used to be but it would be injustice to the movement if I say that I am still an activist because as of the moment, I am left here, slumped on the computer chair, blogging, rather than chanting.

However, I miss those days, back when I was still a student in UP. It just runs through my veins because my loyalty to my country is a common feeling to all. I am not like others, though, who tried to forget their roots once they move out of this place they once call their home.

Ahhh!, It breaks my heart! As the song goes... "hope cannot be defeated!" I always tell that to myself and to others who are obviously losing hope most especially in the midst of bad news around our country. We have been liberated from the Spaniards, Americans, Japanese and from other local conquerors but we are still bonded with our negative attitudes.

Slowly but surely, we will get there and we'll arrive their safely, united and getting ready for future problems.

This song rekindles the activist in me or at least my love for my motherland. This will always remind me that once, I have experienced how to march on the streets of Baguio with out chant: "Makibaka, wag matakot" (join the movement, be not afraid)
