So PS decided to come up with a fundraiser to do for NJHS that would to benefit the victims of a recent disaster in our area (which I may or may not have mentioned recently). She came up with the idea all on her own, came up with a plan, presented it to her NJHS sponsor and got approval. She and a group of buddies will be making bottle cap necklaces to sell at school during their free time.
When she asked where to get images to put on the necklaces, I suggested etsy. She found tons, and was so excited, "Look, they have some with Hunger Games, and Harry Potter and even Nightmare Before Christmas (her favorite movie of all time.)"
And then I said, "we can't buy those image because they are all licensed or copyrighted."
Now I am not an IP lawyer and don't really know anything about copyright. But I'm pretty darn sure that Katniss and Peeta straight from the movie poster are not freely available for anyone who wants to turn into a 1" circle and sell for $2 to anyone dumb enough to pay it.
I did eventually find sellers generating their own artwork and found lots of cute stuff. But I think PS is a little miffed that I shot down the coolest stuff.

As much as PS is surely miffed, I think you did the right thing. I remember when I was apparently the "only mother" who did not allow her child to download "free" music. My daughter's line of argument was how could it be illegal when her friend's parents were doing it too.
Sometimes, I think kids really don't know what is right and wrong as far as IP because no one teaches them and they truly do see their parents doing whatever they want.
But, I know it at least opened a discussion when I stuck to my position. Kids talked about why I wouldn't let my daughter download--and that was a start.
haha... i heart both you and Kate. I dunno much about IP but I am totally the same way.
That's awesome. I was mortified as a child when my dad wanted the neighbourhood kid's parents to sign a waiver before jumping on our trampoline. Mortified. *sigh* What doesn't kill you makes you stronger... And my kids are not having a trampoline anyways!
Thanks ladies. I'm glad I'm not the only mean mom.
Bee--that's hilarious! I won't even let my kids have a trampoline because I don't want the liability when the neighbor kids come over.
PS was also miffed when I wouldn't let our nanny drive her friends around for liability reasons. Oh well, she's a teenager. The world's just not right if I'm not doing something to ruin her life.
