Various - "Brazil Rhodes 3" (comp #13)

 "Bem Vinda" (excerpt)

 "Transamazonica" (excerpt)

 "Brazilian Skies" (excerpt)

 "Viramundo" (excerpt)

 "A Chamada" (excerpt)

"Previsao do Tempo" (excerpt)

Commiserations to our brazilian friends for the football - some consolation here in the form of twenty-three storming rhodes tracks from, or inspired by their great land.

A brief intro from the master, Hermeto Pascoal, leads us into some jazz-fused bangers from Som Imaginario, Antonio Adolfo, Marcos Resende and others.

O Quarteto's clustered vocal tones take us through some live Sergio Mendes and Brasil '77 into the middle section, fusing pop, funk and soul with Marcos Valle, Hyldon, Banda Black Rio and more.

The fusions of Azymuth and Headhunter Bill Summers (check that keyboard solo) leads us back to the atmospherics of Robertinho Silva and the deeper jazz of an uncharacteristically instrumental Ed Motta, before we finish with the beautiful melancholy of instrumental Marcos Valle and the amazing voice of Alaide Costa accompanied by Oscar Castro-Neves.

Enjoy the comp, check the previews above - all tracks @ 320kbps bar one or two - and leave a comment so that I know you're with me on this blogging trip ...

Big everlasting thanks to many blogs and bloggers for feeding my love of various brazilian musics over the last few years - including Quimsy, Ish, Bacoso, Reza, BC, Porco Rosso, Flabbergast, J Thyme, Bruxa, all the Gears crew, and many more, sorry if I've forgotten you ....

Track of The Day : "Ikarus On the Stairs" - Ed Motta (2008)

'Ikarus On the Stairs' - Ed Motta

I've been following Brazilian singer Ed Motta since I got into his 2001 album "Dwitza". He had a substantial pop career before that, but that's the album where he began to reach back to some classic 70s textures and sounds, at the same time pushing the edges of harmonic language in the way that only writers from Brazil can. "Aystelum" from 2005 is another great album.

There's something about the intimacy of the closing track "Ikarus On the Stairs" on his new album "Chapter Nine" that grabs me. Have a listen on headphones, that voice can get right inside your head ...

Brasil : Samba Bossa MPB (swboy mix)

Swboy used to do some great compilations over at El Reza's blog. In the comments for the Brazil Rhodes compilations here, reader Jur expressed a desire for a brasilian singer mix, and Swboy offered to provide, so here it is, and naturally it's a great one! Over to you swboy :

Swboy says :

Here's a mix of vocal music from Brasil featuring Samba, Bossa Nova and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira).

Samba (sung by Clara Nunes and Beth Carvalho here) has its roots in the early 20th century. It features vocal chorus call and response, percussion, and African, Native Indian, and Portugese influences, most famous now as carnival music. An earlier form, Choro, can be heard in Marisa Monte's track "Onde Andaras". The sound of a Brasilian tamborine (pandeiro) is often very present in Samba and Choro.

Bossa Nova, a "new wave" extension of Samba is best known from the early 1960s hit ''Girl from Ipanema'' by Tom Jobim. Bossa is represented in this collection by Jobim, Elis Regina and Rosa Passos, and often has a gentle jazz flavor. The softer and romantic sounds of 'Samba-Cancao' from the 1940s and 50s are the precursor to Bossa Nova.

The most recent music here is MPB (Brasilian popular music), a mix of styles influenced by the Beatles and other pop and rock music. Most of the MPB in this mix looks toward Bossa and Samba traditions, but the songs by Gilberto Gil, Margareth Menezes and Djavan have more overt Rock and R&B elements.

Enjoy!

23 'Flor do Amor' - Hermeto Pascoal

This a collection of mainly 70s Brazilian funk, jazz and some bossa, with all tracks featuring a Fender Rhodes electric piano somewhere in the mix.

Joao Donato is the star here, of course – apart from his three tracks, we’ve got also got Marcos Valle and Emilio Santiago covering his songs, and he’s all over the Orlandivo track with his funky keyboards and production.

I’m a total sucker for the ‘beautiful melancholy’ of some brazilian orchestrators, so we’ve also got the dark beauty of works by Hermeto Pascoal. Luis Eca and Moacir Santos running through their own tracks and others. Listen to Airto's beautiful take on Hermeto's 'Mae Cambina' . Finally, “special contemporary guest” for this edition of the Rhodes series is Ed Motta with ‘Coisas Naturais’ from the fantastic “Dwitza” album.

Give me a shout there if you’re in love with a particular track and curious about what album it comes from. Enjoy!

*STOP PRESS : Those of you feeling the Hermeto orchestrations really also need to grab this album
