Inspire Me Monday ~ Embossing Digital Images

Hello, hello, hello!!!  I tried something I've never done before not knowing if it was even going to work.  When Marcella first showcased this Vital Rose digital image, I knew I wanted to emboss it in white and watercolor it.  But, it was a digital image.  So, I thought I could use my Minc machine and add white foil after coloring it.  Well, that was a fail.  When I tried photo copying the image onto watercolor paper, the toner ink spread to random places.  Nope.

I was discouraged until I remembered I had a Versamark pen.  Why couldn't I just print the image, onto watercolor paper, in a light gray,  and trace it with the Versamark pen?  Fingers crossed...IT WORKED!!!

Now, it transformed the rose a little bit by making it more whimsical with the bolder lines, but it only proved how versatile the Power Poppy images are.  The pen has a thick brush side, and a nib, but the nib is still pretty wide, so you really do need more "coloring space" before outlining because of the bold lines it creates after embossing.  But with digital images, you can just enlarge them.

I used Zig Clean Color Brush Markers to color the Rose, cut it out, and added some pizazz with a Gold Leafing Pen by shaking it over the top.  I also added some gold roughly around the edges of the layers.   The sentiment (from the clear stamp set Chrysanthemum XL) was stamped onto Gold Metallic cardstock with white pigment ink and embossed also.

That's it.  I hope you give it a try.  It's easy, and expands the use of your digital images even more.  How fun is that?!?!?!?

Happy Stamping!!

Creative Confetti: Just Take 10!

Hello Sweet Peeps! Do you ever just crave that time to create but realize there's just one problem? Yes, you don't have the time! Believe me, I can relate! So, this week for our Creative Confetti Challenge, I decided to keep the challenge on the simple side by focusing on.... simple creations! Check it out!

HOW TO PLAY: Take 10! That's right, try to create a card in ten minutes! Now, if it takes a little longer, no worries, no one is going to re-create your card and time the process. The goal is to choose a clean and classy design that takes a fraction of the time that you would normally spend creating. It's a great way to get that quick card making fix!

For our inspiration today, I chose a few cards that the oh-so-talented Tosha Leyendekker created recently. I was so taken by both cards because even though they are on the simple side, they are ANYTHING but boring. I love how balanced both are and how Tosh added little fun accents to give this otherwise simple creation some texture and pop!

This first creation uses a sentiment from Power Poppy's stamp set Good Thinking: Love Notes. I love how Tosh used two different inks to make that sentiment a focal point. Add in some stitched dies and an embossed background and this is one fun masculine card that isn't heavy on the time commitment.

I absolutely adore this creation above which uses some fun dies and a splash of sequins to make this creation sing! And, once again, Tosh made the sentiment the centerpiece of this beauty! The sentiment is from Grandma's Snowflakes. What's fun is the fact that Tosh inked up only a portion of the sentiment to make a holiday sentiment work for Valentine's Day. Brilliant!

A special thanks to Tosh for creating such beautiful pieces of inspiration! So, will you set the timer and take us up on this little Take 10 Challenge? I sincerely hope so because we could all use some inspiration for those beautiful, quick and classy creations! Once you're done creating, don't forget to link up your card using the linky below so that we can see your handiwork and, at that point, you'll also be in the running for a $25 gift code to the Power Poppy Shop too! So, as I love to say, get inspired then get those fingers inky!

Until next time!

Inspire Me Monday ~ Wrap it

Hello and Happy New Year!!!  Tosh here, and I'm excited to bring you some new inspiration today.  As card makers, we are used to picking out an image, deciding on a layout and how to frame it using dies, fussy cutting, or just leaving it as is on a one layer card.  We also can "chop off" part of an image with diecutting or just letting it float off of the side of our card.

Well, today, I thought it would be fun to wrap the image around the card (or over the top) to leave a little surprise for the recipient on the back.  I started by stamping the Artistic Bouquet image on a full sheet of cardstock (you can cut yours to size before stamping if you'd like.).

I then trimmed it to the size I wanted and folded it where I wanted the image to land on the front and back side of my card.  Here's what is going to be the front of my card:

And here is the back side. You don't have to fold it until after all your coloring is done, but I wanted to get a feel of how it was showing on both sides as I colored it.

After I finished coloring it, I diecut a border on each end and adhered two separate scored panels to the inside to hide where the Copics soaked into the cardstock.  At the top of the post, I shared the front of the card, and here is the back...

Lastly, I wanted to show you what it looks like fully opened.

Thanks so much for visiting.  I hope you'll give this a try.
Happy Stamping!!

October Power & Spark: You say it's your birthday!

Is it that time again? Why yes! It's a new month, which means we are just giddy at the thought of ushering in a new challenge to help you light that design power with a creative spark! This month, our hostess with the mostess is the lovely Ms. Tosha and she has a little challenge that's really open for so many possibilities! Check it out my peeps!

HOW TO PLAY: This little challenge asks you to dig deep into your birthday month for inspiration! Instead of sharing, I am going to let Tosh give you all the deets!

It’s your birthday! For this month, Im challenging everyone to use their birthday month as inspiration. Make a card that either celebrates the season (Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer), any holiday that might be happening during the month of your birthday, your wedding, your child's birth, whatever that month represents to you. My birthday is in November, and usually falls pretty close to Thanksgiving. So I chose to use the Pumpkins (from Fortunes of Fall), along with Fall colors since Fall is my favorite season.

So, with that in mind, let's take a gander at Ms. Tosh's creation, shall we?

Isn’t it lovely? I asked how she crafted this autumnal masterpiece and it's as sweet and simple as this! She used Power Poppy's Fortunes of Fall stamp set, stamped with embossing ink, heat embossed with silver fine detail embossing powder and then colored it all up with Zig Clean Color Waterbrush markers! I just love the dreamy look that Tosh seems to achieve -- Every. Single. Time! If you want just a little bit more in the way of details, you'll have to hit up Tosha's Blog HERE for more!

THE OFFICIAL RULES:

    Neutral Hues

Hello all of you creative paper crafters!!  Tosh here filling in for Julie for today's Hues to Use Challenge.  I hope you are enjoying a day surrounded by color, but that doesn't mean it has to be bright, bold, or even soft pastels.  Today...it's all about being NEUTRAL....so get out your grays people!!

It seems Marcy is thinking about Mr. Tibbs today, and for those of you who love bold, bright colors, today's hues might be a bit of a challenge. We're going grayscale.

Would you like to play along?  All you have to do is take your color cues from the photo above  (Julie has highlighted 3 of the most prominent colors in the photo), create a project using those colors, and link it below.  We'd love to see where your creativity takes you, and by participating, you could be chosen to host one of our Hues to Use challenges.  If so, you would get to choose a Power Poppy digi set to play along with.

Are you ready to see my interpretation?  I chose to work with the digital set Easy Breezy Coneflowers.  Now, I LOVE working with neutrals, but shoot, I just can't resist adding a little pop of color.  I might have stepped out of the box a bit, and since this is on the Power Poppy blog itself, I thought I better not make my "pop" very bold, so I just added a subtle purple to the Coneflower center.  This is my first time hosting the Hues to Use Challenge, so since I'm a newbie, hopefully, I won't get in too much trouble.

The Easy Breezy Coneflower digital image itself includes two Coneflowers and I wanted a grouping of them.  So, I used Photoshop to make a little collage out of the blooms and included one of the sentiments.  I then colored the Coneflowers using T2, T1, and T5 along with V17 and V15.  The background was made using T0-T6.  I soaked a piece of textured cloth with Copic Blending Solution and dabbed the background to get that stippled effect.

I created the randomly striped base piece using 3 of the Copic colors listed above: T1, T3 and T5.  I didn't have gray string that matched as closely as I would like, so I just colored up some string with my T5 Copic, and I did the same with the mini clothespin using V17.

Thanks for visiting today.  I look forward to seeing how you all are inspired by these gray tones.  Don't forget to link your creations below.

    Have a fantastic week!!

    Happy Stamping!!

That’s right – you’ll have 12 ways to enter. Play along once or try all 12 days for more chances to win a $50 shopping spree to the Power Poppy Shop!

    Okay...now for today's project!!

A couple of decades ago, I started making Gift Bag Toppers. I actually learned how from a Stampin' Up demonstrator, but since it was about 22 years ago, I can't for the life of me remember her name. The basics are pretty much the same, I just make my borders a bit different. I made a tutorial for it a few years ago that you can find HERE.

Now, for today's bag, I used three different Power Poppy Stamp sets: Tweet Tidings (front panel), Holly Golightly (border and tag), Glitter House Village (top of topper and background tag).

For the border of my topper, I cut out the size, and scored where instructed. Then, I stamped the holly all the way around with Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. I colored it with Copics and then stamped the snow background (from the Glitter House Village set), with Versamark and embossed it using Clear Embossing Powder (SU!) Then came the challenging part...fussy-cutting around all the holly.

I didn't get really particular, and it turned out beautifully, so it doesn't have to be perfect. Lastly, I ink distressed the whole topper with Antique Linen Distress Ink (Ranger), so make the snowflakes pop, and to age everything so it blends with the kraft gift bag. The flakes are hard to see in the photo, but in real life, they are a subtle charming little addition.

Next came the main panel. I started by die cutting the square (6x6 Matting Basics B - Spellbinders) and while the X-Press It cardstock was still in the die, I stamped the two separate Tweet Tidings Chickadees onto it with Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. That way I could maintain a clean white border. I then Ink Distressed the panel with Antique Linen Distress Ink again, and colored the images with Copics. Lastly, I added some White Liquid Applique to the snow portions of the image, sprinkling some Dazzling Diamonds glitter (SU!) on it before heating it with my heating tool. I love the sparkle and fun dimension.

Lastly, every gift bag needs a tag. And fortunately for us, Marcy has designed a fabulous set with a charming tag included. So, I stamped the tag along with one of the sentiments (from the Holly Golightly set), colored it with Copics and cut it out. I felt like it needed a base, so I took my Spellbinders Christmas Tag Set, die cut one of the tags using a piece of decorative paper from Echo Park's I Love Winter 6x6 paper pad. It was kind of plain, so I added an evergreen branch and a portion of a sentiment from the Glitter House Village set. It was stamped with Smokey Gray Versafine ink.

I hope you'll try your hand at decorating a gift bag with a topper. They are easy, and they eliminate the need for tissue paper, and the temptation of the recipients to peek. The topper makes it a bit harder after all. ;) If you do try this project, make sure to share by linking up your creation HERE! Of course, we would all love to see and if you link up your project, you'll be in the running for a $50 shopping spree to the Power Poppy Shop!

Please stop by again tomorrow to see how Mindy Baxter makes a little treat aimed at keeping better tabs on all your hoiday gift purchases!

That is finally it y'all!!  Happy Stamping!!

Inspire Me Monday: Digital Sentiment Manipulation

Hello folks — If you are looking for our Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge + Giveaway post, please CLICK HERE.

Be sure to come back and read this OUTSTANDING tutorial on digital image and sentiment manipulation by the Bloom Brigade’s Tosha Leyendekker.... FILLED with information and step-by-step screen shots! xoxox, ~marcella

Hello creative peeps!!  Welcome to this week's Power Poppy Inspire Me Monday!!!  Tosh here, and I'm going to share with you how I manipulate digital sentiments, using Photoshop, to fit with the layouts I design with Power Poppy's incredible digital images.  For my first card, I used the new digital set Cherries and Berries.

This is a long post, so I hope you bear with me.  I have a second card to share at the end too, in which I used a VERY NEW digital image called Merriest of Berries, along with the sentiment from Power Poppy's Hollyberries Digital set.

So, lets get right to it.  I Loved Marcella's new cherry clusters and thought it would be fun to combine both sentiments that come with the digital set Cherries and Berries.  So here's how I got started:

First, open all the images you want to use for your project.  I chose the cherries, and the two sentiments.  I then click on the middle yellow dot at the top left of the image, to bring them to the bottom of my screen and get them out of the way, leaving only the cherries on the board.

See that little pink eraser on the left?  Right click on the image and then click on the Magic Eraser Tool at the bottom of the pop-up screen.  Now, lets have some fun erasing!!  Just click on all the white space around your cherries that you want to be erased.  You'll need to click on the small areas too.  That way the only part that shows up when you create your design is the image itself.  No background noise.  Do this with each of your sentiments also.

Now, you're going to want to create the base for your image.  Start by clicking on File at the top, then "New", then "Blank File".

I want my card front to be a vertical rectangle so I'm making my base rectangular.  I chose 5" for my width, and 7" for my height.  My next card is square, so I just made the dimensions 5"x 5".  It's easier when getting ready to print it out.

I brought my image into the my blank base by clicking on the cherries at the bottom of the screen and dragging them into the frame.  Now, you can rotate, enlarge or shrink them by first clicking on the square arrows on the upper left hand side.  I've darkened the area by clicking on it and you can see a solid arrow pointing to it.

See the boxes around the image?  By hovering over one of them with your mouse, you can rotate it any direction.  You can also shrink or enlarge it.  I like to only use the corner boxes to shrink or enlarge because it doesn't distort the image.  Just hover over it until the arrows show, click and drag larger or smaller until you get the size you want.  I kept the cherries in their original size and just rotated and each time I wanted to add a cluster, I clicked on the cherries at the bottom of my screen and drug them up into the frame, and, once again, rotated them until I got the look I wanted.

There are times when you may want one image in front of the other, and it may automatically go behind.  That's easy to fix.  Just right-click on the image you want to manipulate and click "bring forward" or "send back".

Here's a look at my final cherry arrangement.  Once I was happy with how they were arranged, I moved on to the sentiments.  Now we're finally getting to what this tutorial is really about.

I started by bringing up the first sentiment to the main screen by "double-clicking" the one I want.  I then made 4 duplicates by clicking on File at the top left, and then duplicate.  You're going to need 4 duplicates because you are going to be doing a lot of erasing.

Back to our eraser.  Right-Click on it and click on "eraser tool" at the top of the "drop-down" menu.  Next you will want to decide the size of your eraser.  We want to cover fairly large areas at a time, so I would suggest making the eraser a bit larger.  But small enough to fit in the tight areas.  If you are uncomfortable using a larger eraser in the smaller areas, you can always resize your eraser at any time.  Look at the top left of the screen.  See the brush stroke? Just go to the right of that and choose the size of the stroke you want.  Mine was set at 99 because I was erasing the entire bottom portion of the image, leaving only the word "You".

Then, using the highlighted crop tool on the left, crop your sentiment as close to the edge as possible.  It just makes it easier to lay out.

Do this with each panel of your sentiment.  Leaving only one section, or word, on each one.  I separated "You", "really are the", "sweetest" and "thing" so I needed 4 duplicates.  I then went on to do the same to the other sentiment.

It looks like this before you crop them.  Once again, I click on all the yellow dots, and take them off of my main screen so I just have my cherry base up.  Click and drag up each part of your sentiment one at a time.

Now I can play around with each section of sentiment...enlarging, shrinking, rotating...whatever you want to do to fit your layout.  (use the square arrows, at the top left of the vertical strip, again) I enlarged the word "you", and shrunk some others.  I also rotated the word "with".  Just have some fun.

Once I get my sentiment layout the way I want it, I save it and insert it into a new Word document.  I can resize the entire panel there the way I want it.

That's finally it for the tutorial portion.  Here is a look at the final result once again.  I loved the look of the black/white with the bold red cherries standing out on their own, so I decided not to color the leaves or any of the sentiment.  Marcy does such an incredible job with her designs, that they are gorgeous even without coloring!

And here's a look at a card I made with the sentiment overlaid over the entire image.

I did everything the same as above, only I lightened the image first.

Click on "Enhance" at the top, scroll down to"Adjust Color", then to "Color Variations".  I made sure the "Midtone" button was highlighted on the left, and just clicked "lighter" about 6 times.  I then created a New Blank File, and drug the image up into it.  You can then lighten or darken it even more by clicking on "Adjust Color", then "Adjust Hue/Saturation.  Slide the "lightness" bar according to how saturated you want the image.

Erase the sentiment the same way you did before, and just lay it over the image any way you feel fits.

    Here's a close-up:

Whew, that's it.  I hope I've explained it all clear enough, and that you get an opportunity to try manipulating some digital sentiments of your own.  Thanks for sticking with me!

      Happy Stamping!
