ChatGPT is bullshit | Ethics and Information Technology 🚀

"ChatGPT is bullshit" opens this philosophical discussion that is overly-specific (it's not just applicable to ChatGPT but to all LLMs) and erroneously slips into anthropomorphizing with statements like "ChatGPT is a soft bullshitter" and "Is ChatGPT itself a hard bullshitter?" For that to be true, by this article's definition it must have intentions or goals: "it must intend to deceive its listener, not about the content of its statements, but instead about its agenda." It should be clear that as algorithms, LLMs don't have intentions or goals, but the people who promote them clearly do, making the question "Is ChatGPT a hard bullshitter?" a red herring.

What we really need to ask is "Are the people promoting and selling LLMs hard bullshitters?" and I think for anyone who's not deluded, the answer is yes.

Plagiarism also lowers the barrier for creating art, as does copyright and patent infringement. If "Big Tech" directly advocated for those things, there would be no debate (or support for them).

Home-Cooked Software and Barefoot Developers 🚀
https://maggieappleton.com/home-cooked-software

I was getting into this idealistic view, despite thinking that it seemed a bit exaggerated, because I agree that there are things that big corporations can't make. There are still some things that we need them to make, like integrated circuits and undersea cables, but we might be able to do more without them than we think.

But with LLMs? Quoting the intro:

"For the last ~year I've been keeping a close eye on how language models capabilities meaningfully change the speed, ease, and accessibility of software development. The slightly bold theory I put forward in this talk is that we're on a verge of a golden age of local, home-cooked software and a new kind of developer – what I've called the barefoot developer."

IDK, this seems like a new name for "democratizing software development" and LLMs seem like a way to very expensively and unreliably reach downward to a rapidly rising platform of technologies that despite our complaints, really are getting more powerful and usable daily.
