On Instagram I see pictures of Portuguese people on the beach — here the wind sweeps away the leaves from the trees. I still love autumn but ever since I've moved to the Southern hemisphere, I'm somehow unable to enjoy it in the same way as I used to. For more than a year I've felt that the seasons have been stolen from me... it's such a strange sensation. I know one should concentrate in the present moment and try to make the most of the place where one lives — I've recently read a lovely quote: "bloom where you're planted" — but the truth is, my roots are still firmly stuck in Europe and so I feel this disconnection all the time. I'm sure you've noticed that the blog is becoming less and less season-centered... it's just not as pleasurable for me to make quince paste in March, bake apple cake in May and talk about raspberries in December when the majority of my audience lives in the Northern hemisphere. Yes, it's my blog, but I also write it for you.
I've been wanting to write about this for ages (around Christmas time the feeling tends to be even more acute) but I don't want it to sound like a lamentation... it's more of a misfit, a product of this internet age. Sometimes I don't even know which month it is, isn't that crazy? I guess it's just years and years of references which I now must interpret through a mirror. Well, everything just takes time.
