MySpace founder willing to pay Lincecum's salary if Giants sign him

This is such a great idea that I'm sure the union, the owners and MLB will all be dead set against it. Imagine the arms race that could develop between these 1%'ers if they were all unleashed. It would be the Wild West.

This is something I would do, if I had the discretionary income burning a hole in my pocket. That's why I know for sure it will get shot down.

Giants non-tender Yusmeiro Petit and Hector Sanchez - McCovey Chronicles

Two more long-time Giants who are leaving the fold, Petit to the Nationals and Sanchez to the White Sox. I'm not as flip as Grant Bisbee over at McCovey Chronicles seems to be about the loss of Petit. I don't know if Chris Heston fills the role Petit did quite as well. I'm also not sure the Giants win the last World Series without some significant contributions out of the pen from Petit.

Sanchez seemed to lose the hit too after the concussion(s) and struggled to get it bat, but in his time he was a really good hitting prospect behind the dish. Hector seems to set up for outside pitches in the "decap zone" where foul tips come off the bat really, really hard. It would be hard to justify the veteran salary Sanchez would get with the development of bot Andrew Susac and Trevor Brown.

Sometimes the transaction wire contains bad news. As expected, Ryan Vogelsong moves on to greener pastures. A great Giant, he will be sorely missed.

The same could be said for Juan Perez. A great Giant. Understood his role and performed well when called upon. It seems hard enough to get Gregor Blanco enough AB's and playing time, except for injuries. Perez was just blocked here in SF, he serves a shot to show what he can do given more opportunities.

Giants add Cueto

It very likely means bye-bye Mike Leake. OK.
It very likely means bye-bye Timmy. OK.
It very likely means bye-bye to an impact bat in LF. OK.

Because it also means the Gigantes are serious contenders for the NL West title, the NL title along withe the Mets, Cubs,Cards, D-Backs and Dodgers.

If you had told me Samardzjia AND Cueto prior to the of Fun-season. I would have said "don't you mean OR?"

I may have preferred Price and/ or Zimmerman, but I like this mix as well. Cain and Peavy in the 4/5 slots and Heston in reserve?

That sounds really good to me.

Here's to Cueto's good health.

Giants land Cueto with 6-year, $130M deal

The National League West got even stronger Monday, as one of its clubs landed the top pitcher still available on the free-agent market.

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a six-year deal with right-hander Johnny Cueto, pending a physical.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports the deal is worth $130 million, and Cueto can opt out after the second year. There's also a club option for a seventh year.

San Francisco signed righty Jeff Samardzija to a five-year, $90-million pact earlier this month, and now features one of the better starting rotations in baseball.

The Giants needed to address their pitching needs this fall after losing Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong to free agency, and following Tim Hudson's retirement.

Cueto reportedly rejected a six-year, $120-million offer from the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this fall, and his agent publicly statedhis client also had interest in joining the Boston Red Sox. Arizona countered by signing Zack Greinke to a six-year, $206.5-million deal, and Boston landed southpaw David Price with a seven-year, $217-million pact.

Pitching at spacious AT&T Park should benefit Cueto for years to come, as should a return to the NL after a brief stint with the World Series champion Kansas City Royals. The 29-year-old hurler is 96-70 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 226 career starts.

Arroyo, Beede Headline Top Prospect List | Inside the San Jose Giants

The amazing part is not so much how rapidly Arroyo's stock has risen but how former Golden Boy Kyle Crick has descended. Right off the Baseball America's Top Ten list. Not saying the assessment is anything but accurate for either prospect, I'm just saying.

Next move might be to but Arroyo some OF mitts. A little crowded in the Gigante IF.

Arroyo, Beede Headline Top Prospect List
By Joe Ritzo

Christian Arroyo has been named the #1 prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization by Baseball America

2015 San Jose Giants standouts Christian Arroyo and Tyler Beede were rated the #1 and #2 prospects respectively in the San Francisco organization today by Baseball America. Seven of the ten players on BA's top 10 list are former San Jose Giants.

Baseball America's Top 10 San Francisco Giants prospects:
1. Christian Arroyo, SS
2. Tyler Beede, RHP
3. Phil Bickford, RHP
4. Lucius Fox, SS
5. Chris Shaw, 1B
6. Sam Coonrod, RHP
7. Aramis Garcia, C
8. Clayton Blackburn, RHP
9. Jarrett Parker, OF
10. Adalberto Mejia, LHP

Arroyo is coming off an outstanding 2015 season in the California League. As San Jose's everyday shortstop this year, Arroyo finished seventh in the league with a .304 batting average. Over 90 games, Arroyo produced 28 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 42 RBI's. A consistent presence out of the #2 spot in the batting order, Arroyo hit .300 in the first half before batting at a .307 clip after the All-Star break. For his efforts, Arroyo was named to the postseason California League All-Star team while also garnering the San Jose Giants team MVP award.

The 20-year old former first round pick then followed up his fantastic campaign in San Jose with a stellar effort in the Arizona Fall League. Facing some of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Arroyo hit .308 with three home runs over 19 AFL games.

Arroyo was rated the #10 prospect in the system by Baseball America after the 2014 season. He's the first position player to be named the #1 prospect in the organization by BA since Gary Brown after the 2012 season. Buster Posey (2010) and Brandon Belt (2011) have also garnered the #1 prospect distinction as position players this decade.

Yadier Alvarez Emerges While Other Cubans Move Closer to Deals | FanGraphs Baseball

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEMOA0cElXo

Dodgers reportedly are set to sign Olivera. There is some great analysis of the major Cuban prospects available and although the Giants are reportedly "interested" in all, the next question begged is "at what price?"

from FanGraphs Baseball:
Yadier Alvarez Emerges While Other Cubans Move Closer to Deals | FanGraphs Baseball:

I returned a few days ago from a three-day trip to the Dominican to see top July 2nd prospects (more on that in the coming weeks) and also a workout that had 18 Cuban players in it. Two of those 18 were big-time prospects, the well-known and hyped 29-year-old 2B Hector Olivera and the brand new name, 18-year-old righty Yadier Alvarez.  Here’s my notes and video on those two, along with some quick updates on the other two notable Cubans on the market, 2B/3B/CF Yoan Moncada and 2B Andy Ibanez. For reference, in my top 200 prospects list that is coming next week, these Cuban players aren’t included on the list, but Moncada would be 8th, Alvarez would be 57th and Ibanez would be in the 150-200 range, while Olivera is ineligible due to his age and experience.
'via Blog this'

Moncada will be priced out of the G-mens budget, so we can all stop salivating right now.

Olivera projects as maybe a utility piece at best and a health risk at worst. Maybe he helps if Uribe gets real old, real fast.

Ibanez seems to be in the Giants wheelhouse from a prospect standpoint, so if any, he would be the Cuban prospect from this report that is most likely to wear a Giants hat.

The Giants Might Have Gotten Lucky by Missing out on James Shields

I guess if you knew in advance that the market would back up on Shields and you could get him at 4 / $75-$80M you would have waited. But the Giants moved when they did, the problem being that now Shields is in the division, and while I don't think the Padres are better yet than the Giants, they have closed the gap and are now serious contenders to compete for the second wild-card. Which is perhaps about where the Giants are again.

It is odd that Shields calling card -- his reliability, dependability and durability -- came back to haunt him, proving once again that it sucks to get old.

from Bleacher Report:
The Giants Might Have Gotten Lucky by Missing out on James Shields:

This comes up now because the combination of Peavy and Vogelsong adds up to about one James Shields. The Giants probably would have had to pay a little more to get him away from his hometown, but they're going to pay two starting pitchers -- one of whom might not even be in the rotation -- about the same as Shields. They went for quantity, not quality.
'via Blog this'

So the Giants starting pitching staff now is what it is, The Magnificent Seven of Bumgarner, Cain, Peavy, Hudson, Lincecum, Vogelsong and Petit. Not bad. We need some bounce back years, some good health reports and a little luck to compete perhaps, but the top five have pitched great at times in their career and mediocre at other times.

Do the Giants have enough starting pitching?

To find out, I looked to the past three times the Giants won the title -- 2010, 202 and 2014 and used the somewhat controversial statistic called quality starts. According to Baseball Reference.com, a quality start is one where the starting pitcher pitches six or more innings and allows three runs or fewer. In theory, the starter has given his team a better than average chance of winning the game. The rest is on the offense, the bullpen, etc. Would I prefer the Nolan Ryan stat High Quality Start, which requires seven inning pitched and three earned runs or less? Yes!! But ESPN.com / STAT Inc. don't use that standard so I'm stuck with the other version.

Side note: According to wikipedia.com, the highest quality start percentage for a season was recorded by Greg Maddux, who had 24 of 25 quality starts in 1994. Bob Gibson was 32 for 34 in 1968.

Also, from 1950 to June 2013, the overall leaders by quality start percentage (min 100 starts) includes:

1. Tom Seaver 70.2%
2. Mel Stottlemyre 69.4%
3. Adam Wainwright 68.8%
4. Bob Gibson 68%
5. Josh Johnson 67.7%
6. Roy Oswalt 67%
7. Randy Johnson 66.8%
8. Jered Weaver 66.8%
9. Brandon Webb 66.7%
10. Pedro Martinez 66.7%

A list that identifies four legit Hall of Famers and some other stud pitchers that can be best described as "glue" guys, -- maybe not outstanding, maybe under-appreciated, but hold things together -- can't be all that bad. Plus it leads with Tom Terrific, so....

Anyway, back to the Gigantes......

2010
Cain had 25/33 quality starts or a 76% quality start percentage
Lincecum 22/33 67%
Zito 19/33 58%
J. Sanchez 14/33 42%
Bumgarner 11/18 61%
Wellmeyer 4/11 36%
J. Martinez 0/1 0%
for a team total of 95 / 162 quality starts or 59% QSP

Bumgarner was nails even back then!!!

2012
Vogelsong 22/31 71%
Cain 21/32 65%
Bumgarner 19/32 59%
Zito 17/32 53%
Lincecum 13/33 40%
Hacker 1/1 100%
Petit 0/1 0%
for a team total of 93 /162 or 57% QSP

A little bit of slippage, but still good enough. You can see just how long Timmy has been scuffling though.

2014
Bumgarner 21/33 64%
Hudson 18/31 58%
Vogelsong 15/32 47%
Lincecum 13/26 50%
Peavy 8/12 67%
Cain 6/15 40%
Petit 5/12 42%
for a team total of 86 / 162 or 53% QSP

Here, you can clearly see a bounce back from Timmy, to bottom of the rotation status. Also clear is how valuable Peavy's contribution was (turned Cain's spot from a disaster to a passable effort) and how much Vogelsong slipped, almost off the roster. Under 50% QSP just won't do it.

It really is amazing that this team made the playoffs with the slippage in overall performance of the starting rotation. It was almost held together by spit and bailing wire.  That is pretty much the makings of a .500 team starting rotation.

So, the questions for 2015 become:

  • How much are you getting out of Matt Cain? A return to 60+% QSP would be great.
  • What can you expect from the four older warriors? And I include Lincecum/Vogelsong in there with Peavy and Hudson. Have to run between 55-60% QSP IMO.
In my mind, some combination of Lincecum / Vogelsong and Petit are the fifth starters for the 2015 Giants with battlefield promotions due to any injuries that occur.

If Cain, Bumgarner, Peavy and Hudson give you near 60% QSP for their 128 starts (32 each) this team will be OK. Then you only need 50% from the Vogie/Timmy/Petit troika. Very doable.

By comparison, the Dodgers will throw out their own troika of

Kerhsaw 24/27 89% QSP
Greinke 21/32 65% QSP
Ryu 19/26 73% QSP

64/85 75% QSP out of the top three!! Incredible. Even if you only get 50% out of the other starts, you're looking at 102-103 Quality Starts. That is Quality starting pitching and will be very tough to beat.

The good news for the good guys is this is an odd numbered year, so expectations will be low. On the other hand, this is your third chance to get the whole defending your title thing right, so whatever.

More good news is if this turns out to be a bridge or transition year, a lot of payroll dollars (maybe $40M?) come off the books and there will be a treasure trove of starters coming on the market, led by David Price.

Sabean should fee like a fat kid, with a fat allowance in a candy store next Hot Stove League.

"I'm back where I wanted to be," Ryan Vogelsong says after signing one-year deal - Giants Extra

"I'm back where I wanted to be," Ryan Vogelsong says after signing one-year deal

From Vogie Out!! to Vogie Back!!!. Not only back where he wanted to be, but back where he belonged. He just wouldn't have looked right in another uniform. And so continues the great comeback story with the Voglesong's proving true the old adage that "behind (beside?) every great man is a great woman....chirping in his ear every two seconds".

from Giants Extra:
"I'm back where I wanted to be," Ryan Vogelsong says after signing one-year deal -

Giants Extra:

Through it all, a persistent voice pushed him back toward San Francisco.

“I also have a wife (Nicole) that loves San Francisco and loves the fans and I’ve got her chirping in my ear every two seconds,” he said.

Vogelsong talks openly about his faith, and said a return just felt right to the family, which includes a young son, Ryder. He credited “divine intervention” for pushing him back towards the Giants and said it felt like a weight had been lifted when he left Houston and returned to negotiating with the Giants.

“When a decision came down everything kept leading me back to San Francisco,” he said. “Honestly, I just think it’s where I’m supposed to be. Stuff happens for a reason."

It just makes more sense from both sides that Vogie ends up in SF than Houston. For the Giants, if you need a "Vogelsong-like" pitcher to fill out the staff, and Vogelsong is available, you don't give the fans Jason Marquis. From Vogie's side, I'm not sure he has enough mileage in him to see the results of the Astros rebuilding effort. Why not Pittsburgh and close that career circle instead?

Giants Get a Steal with Nori Aoki

Giants add former Kansas City Royals outfielder Nori Aoki

I like the deal initially and if Fan Graphs likes it, I like it even more. This should give the lineup a little more diversity and with McGahee, it should be a more disciplined, albeit less power-laden lineup, Plus, you get a little Pagan injury insurance at the top of the order.

You have basically replaced Sandoval and Morse with McGahee and Aoki. OK, who replaces the HR power you just lost? Posey, Pence and Belt likely will need to contribute 5 or more additional HR's each over last years output. Very doable if all three stay healthy.

I still think one more move is in the future and necessary for the Giants. As much as I would like that move to be Moncada, that would not help the title defense effort at all. Another pitcher? If the price of Shields comes down a bit, maybe. But with what Scherzer just signed for, I doubt there will be much of a Shields discount. If anything, Shields price tag to the Scherzer also-rans just went up a bit.

from Fan Graphs:
Giants Get a Steal with Nori Aoki:
With a $4 million base salary in 2015, it seems likely the second year option is probably around $7 million, and then some incentives could push it to the $12.5 million figure if he played really well. But even if he absolutely maxes out, that’s still less than what the crowd estimated, half of what I guessed, and only a fraction of it is guaranteed.
At this price, this is probably going to go down as one of the better free agent signings of the winter. Aoki isn’t any kind of star, but he’s a perfectly acceptable corner outfielder. He doesn’t have a platoon split issue, so he can play everyday.
He’s a good enough defender to not need to be subbed out for a late game replacement. And yet the Giants are basically paying him like a bench player.
Heyman notes that Aoki took less money to play for the Giants, so perhaps there’s some World Series discount in here, but this is still a huge bargain. In a market where worse players are signing for $20 million and costing their teams a first round pick, Aoki for $5 million is kind of amazing.

'via Blog this'

P.S. Good to see the Giants brass appears to agree with my assessment of the deal.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/giants/2015/01/20/bochy-sabean-talk-lack-power-lineup-changes-comes-next/

BTW, the Cubs got the other guy I thought would be a good fit, for the same reasons as Aoki, in Dexter Fowler. Fowler would have cost a prospect or two while Aoki only costs payroll space.

BTWII, I keep hearing that the Giants may need to add a guy like Ryan Vogelsong. Last time I checked, Ryan Vogelsong was still available. SIGN VOGIE!!! You cheap bastards!!!

Evans: Giants 'staying engaged' with Rays on Zobrist | CSN Bay Area

So, let me get this straight, the Giants:
  • are not engaged with Scherzer, nor do we plan to be engaged with Scherzer
  • are out on Shields
  • are staying engaged with Zobrist
from CSN Bay Area:
Evans: Giants 'staying engaged' with Rays on Zobrist | CSN Bay Area:
While nothing appears imminent, Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans told MLB Network Radio on Sunday morning that the team is "staying engaged" with the Tampa Bay Rays about a possible trade for infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist.
'via Blog this'

Sounds like the Giants are the biggest getting left at the altar, no free-agent getting-est, Super Tramps in the major leagues.

Let me know when the Giants are actually getting married to someone and where they'll be registered, because I'm getting tired of all these stupid updates and so-called rumors.

Equally as stupid are some of the trade proposals. I read some Internet clown from a website named Rays of Sunshine or something equally as inane, speculate that the price of the Giants acquiring Zobrist (who BTW turned out to be nearly Ted Williams incarnate, should be Kyle Crick, Andrew Susac and the obviously unproven Joe Panik.

OK genius, let's run through the math. For one year of control over Ben "Winter" Zobrist, the Giants should give up six years of control over the organization's  top pitching prospect and two guys who have at least "proven" themselves capable during a pennant race and the World Series, albeit not a full major league season? But the Giants have another 5-6 years of control over those guys. For one year of Ben Zobrist? I don't think I would give up any ONE of those guys straight up for a year of Ben Zobrist, regardless of how glorious that year might be. And BTW, I think Zobrist would be a great fit for the Giants, but sorry junior-GM, go back to your fantasy league dealings and STFU. You better hope the Rays new GM doesn't play his hand as foolishly as that among his peers, or you'll be taking your season tickets to Montreal or Havana or God knows where in the very near future.

I'm with the lunatic fringe on this one.

http://www.sflunaticfringe.com/comics/signs-youre-an-over-obsessed-sports-fan/

Signs You’re An Over-Obsessed Sports Fan

My bad, it was Rays Colored Glasses and the asking price was only Crick and Susac, but still....nothing like over-valuing your own. Zobrist is more valuable to the Rays at this point than almost anyone else, but then they end up with nothing for him and still outside of the playoffs. The Giants meanwhile can sit on their under-valued assets and keep winning championships.

http://www.chatsports.com/tampa-bay-rays/a/How-the-San-Francisco-Giants-Could-Acquire-Ben-Zobrist-2-10935731

According to Fans Graphs WAR stats, the Giants roster would have ranked 7th in the NL and the Royals 7th in the AL in WAR. And yet both statistically pathetic teams (the Giants rank behind the Cubs, for Pete's sake) made the World Series. So if all the pocket-protector GM's are so intent at worshipping at the mythical statistical God called WAR, so be it. Other can focus on winning games.
