O wzgórzach Llangollen, Greasy spoon i antykwariacie w teatrze / About Llangollen hills, greasy spoon reastaurant and the 2nd hand bookshop

Wczoraj wybraliśmy się z T. na zakupy i przejażdzkę do Llangollen. Oczywiśnie nie obyło się bez sklepów z craftem :P Zanim jednak dojechaliśmy do Llangollen, zatrzymaliśmy się po drodze przy  kafejce Ponderos-ie położonej wysoko we wzgórzach żeby zrobić parę fotek.  Bardzo lubię to miejsce, jest co podziwiać. Góry i pagóry dookoła, morze trawy, wrzosowiska no i oczywiście stada z owcami i jagniętami bo teraz jest sezon na młode. Beczenie słychać z każdej strony.

Yesterday we decided to spend Saturday shopping for some nice stuff (nice stuff = my craft stuff :D) in Llangollen :) Before we reached it, we stopped on the way to take some pictures :) "Hillscape" is what you can admire from the Ponderosa cafe and the Horse Shoe Pass 

The hills are very green at the moment and  there are lots of lambs around. All you can hear in the distance is baaaah! baaah! baaah!

I love the wilderness of those hills! And this is the real Wales, the proper Wales :) The sea of emerald green grass, moors (fabulous in autumn!), stones on slopes, wavy roads leading to nowhere...And sheep, sheep, sheep everywhere...

Ponderosa to dobrze znana turystom kafejka i sklep z pamiątkami położona na szczycie wzgórza. Jest również miejscem weekendowych spotkań motocyklistów. Podobno taka mają tradycję od lat, zjeżdżają się, pija kawę, rozmawiają i rozjeżdzają się.

Ponderosa is a well-known place (a motel with a cafe and a souvenir shop) and popular with bikers, who gather there in large quantities throughout the whole weekend. They meet up, chat, have a cup of coffee and ride away. T. says they have been doing it for years.

Horse Shoe Pass to przełecz górska a konkretnie dosyć stroma droga dla samochodów na obrzeżu wzgórz, mająca kształt podkowy końskiej. Nie da się jej sfotografować w jednym kawałku, można ją jedynie zobaczyć z lotu ptaka, na mapie albo na tym panoramicznym filmiku. Normalnie na codzień jest tam dosyć wietrznie, potrafi być mglisto a w zimie jest ona często zamknięta dla bezpieczeństwa pojazdów z powodu obsuwającego się śniegu i lodu. Szybka jazda tą przełęczą to niezła adrenalina :) Naprawde robi wrażenie ;)
Wczoraj mieliśmy mała przygodę z owcą, która nagle wystraszyła sie i wbiegła niespodziewanie ze stromego wzgórza na drogę. Biedna wbiegła na nasz pas i w popłochu uciekała przed warkotem silnika. T. oczywiście zwolnił, żeby miała szansę zbiec z drogi na bok ale baliśmy się przez moment, że może jakiś nadjeżdżający z przeciwka samochod potraci biedne zwierzę. Na szczescie zwierzę zbiegło w szoku na bok drogi i dołączyło do innych pasących się owiec. A my odetchnęliśmy z ulgą.

Horse Shoe Pass is a wavy mountain pass offering you spectacular views and leading to Llangollen Valley. You can't photograph the Horse Shoe Pass in one piece, you can either see it from the air or on this sliding panoramic film - click. I was really impressed with those hills when my bf took me there for the first time. It's quite windy there and it can get foggy too. In winter this pass is often closed due to difficult weather conditions, snowfalls, ice and landslides. It's also quite scary to drive there too! Yesterday we had to "chase" a poor sheep on the road there which suddenly spooked and ran onto the road from a slopey hill. It was running right in front of our car scared by the car engine. We obviously slowed down to give it a chance to run onto a side of the road and we were afraid that it might be hit by an oncoming car. Luckily that frightened sheep quickly found its way on the edge of the road. We felt relieved.

Kiedy dotraliśmy już do Llangollen, od razu udaliśmy sie do baru okreslanego etykietką Greasy Spoon (=dosłownie znaczy: tłusta łyżka) Restauracje/bary tego typu do tanie jadłodajnie drugiej klasy, gdzie można zjeść niewielki posiłek na gorąco, napić się kawy czy herbaty. Wnetrza są zazwyczaj stare, dosyć obskurne, nieodnowione, brak konkretnego stylu, jedzenie nie jest rewelacyjne a określnie greasy spoon ma określać poziom higieny utrzymywany w takim barze :)

When we finally reached Llangollen we made a beeline to a greasy spoon restaurant, where my bf likes to eat his burgers. Greasy spoon restaurant is a type of a 2nd class cheap food outlet, where you can eat a hot meal. The style of that place is old fashioned, archetypal, and a bit shabby. The phrase "greasy spoon" refers to a level of hygiene maintained in those places. These places are quite popular with locals. The one we went to looked like this:

Zauważcie styl wyposażenia wnętrz, a właściwie to jego brak. Wszystko jest od sasa, krzesła w różnym stylu, stoliki też się różnia, ściany nie powalają swoją świeżością....

Notice the style of the interior or actually the lack of it - each chair is different, and so are the tables ;) as if it was a collection of random pieces of furniture....

Wewnątrz siedziało paru lokalnych Walijczyków, niektórzy o lekko surowym, nieokrzesanym wyglądzie, inni bardziej eleganccy, oczywiście na talerzach paszteciki - typowy widok!

Inside there were some local Welsh people, some rugged, some not, eating their... pies :) typical sight!

Chociaż dobrze wiemy, że kawa i herbata w tej greasy spoon smakuja okropnie, to mimo to jednak wracamy do tego miejsca. Po co? Nie wiem!  Obie rozwodnione jak pomyje! A ostatnio to nawet jakieś "krokodylki" pływały mi w herbacie. Tym razem biorę owocową. Czarna z mlekiem! nieee, dziękuję!

We already know that the coffee there is bad! (Why the hell do we keep coming back there?! I don't know!) It's watered down and tastes awful! Tea is not better either! Last time I had to drink some tea with  some "floating seahorses" in it! ;)

This time I take only tea, fruit tea.... no milk for me please!

T. zadowolony jest z tego co podano mu na talerzu. Uwielbia burgery, jak większość Brytyjczyków. To własnie one są powodem dla którego wracamy raz po raz do greasy spoon.
Potem wdrapujemy się na górę do antykwariatu z ksiązkami, znajdującego sie na pierwszym piętrze na tyłach budynku. Nietypowe miejsce. Klimatyczne na swój sposób. Kiedyś był tam teatr! Deski, drewniana podłoga i rama sceny do dziś tam pozostały. Teraz powierzchnię tego teatru zajmuja regały z ksiązkami. Warunki kurzowo-pająkowe, a ceny nieco odstraszają. Ale mimo to za każdym razem tam zaglądamy.

He is happy with what he gets :) He loves burgers from the greasy spoon :) And they must be THAT reason why we keep coming back there!

Then we are off to a second hand book shop upstairs. It's the secret of that greasy spoon place - an old wooden theatre chamber turned into a book store. Conditions there are appalling and so are the book prices but I somehow like going there. I love book stores!

I took some photos to show you this place. I even asked for the permission to take pictures. The two guys must have thought I had gone mad taking pictures of that shabby and dusty place!

Zauwazcie tę drewniana ramę - pozostałości sceny teatralnej. To musiało wyglądać kiedyś wspaniale! Llangollen to miasto turystyki i kultury, kryje w sobie wiele takich ciekawych miejsc.

Notice the wooden frames of the stage at the back of that book store - the remnants of a theatre! (It must have looked splendid in those days!!! Culture-oriented Llangollen must have lots of secrets from the past like this!)

Niestety niektóre pokoje, w których stoją regały z ksiązkami sa w okropnym stanie. Tylko spójrzcie na ściany i sufit! Brr....

Some rooms in which the books are stored are so.... appalling! Just look at the celing and walls!

However this book store has got its special atmosphere and I like going there :) I always bring a book or two from there! 

Po greasy spoon, oczywiście ląduję w pobliskim Crafter's Cove - bardzo dobrze wyposażonym sklepie craftowym a po 30 min po drugiej stronie ulicy w małym sklepiku pewnego Walijczyka, pełnego różności - nitek, mulin, farb, materiałów, kartek, klejów, książek... Bardzo lubię to miejsce. Właściciel jest bardzo rozmowny i zawsze wychodzimy stamtad z tżtem po godzinie! Ma wspaniałego psa rasy border collie o nazwie Bryn.

Po Llangollen pojechaliśmy do sklepu z arykułami ogrodniczymi w Moreton. Jest tam sporo do oglądania, również wiele wspaniałości dla domu. Oczywiście kawa i ciacho na koniec dnia :) Mniam!!!

Co za dzien! Wrócilismy nieco zmęczeni ale szczęsliwi. A ja na pewno :P

After The Greasy Spoon I made my beeline to a lovely shop Crafter's Cove which I left after 30 minutes with a bag full of goodies (will show them off next time!) just to cross the street to get to another craft shop with haberdashery and needlework. Love that place too! It's a small shop run by a friendly chatty Welshman, where lots of useful crafty products are sold. Simply love buying there. We always end up chatting with the owner for an hour or so. He's got such a lovely black and white collie dog! This time I left that place with two bags full of patchwork fabric!!! 

After Llangollen we also drove to Moreton Garden Centre where we like to walk around, look at some home decor products, have a coffee and a piece of cake.  Yummy!

What a nice day it was! We came back a little tired but happy. Especially me! :P
