fucking Metal!!!  This should not be confused with the cock rock band with the same name.
I wasn't familiar with these guys in the early days.  It wasn't until the 90's that I was introduced to them by this metal freak named John who would frequent the comic shop I worked at.  John would swing by every week, and give me cassettes of demo's and rare obscure metal records that he had dubbed for me.  What I recall most about this dude was that he lived at home with him mom, but had a porn addiction that i'd say matched almost any one I'd ever met.  Dude drove around in this clunker of a car(like a la barren I think), blasting metal on his tape deck, with his video porn collection stored in the trunk so that his mother wouldn't find it at home.  Totally hilarious.  All I could ever imagine was him getting in an accident, or pulled over by the cops who searched his car only to find a huge stash of porn in the trunk.  At any rate John taped me one of this bands demo's from the 80's.  Years later I saw this sucker and knew I needed it.  I guess this German Black/Death/Thrash band flew under my radar because I was more interested in Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction.  At any rate this compiles a bunch of demo tracks, a live tune, and some other rarities.  The band formed in the early 80's, and signed some bogus contract that didn't allow them to record anything for some time.  This lead to inactivity, and then the bands break up.

Hellhammer was of course pre Celtic Frost and hailed from Switzerland. I'd never heard of any music coming out of the country at the time. Both bands had a huge impact on both the black metal scene(which really was pretty non existent at the time), and doom metal. The only other bands I can recall being this "evil" at the time would have been Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, and Slayer. It's also pretty amazing to hear what an impact these dudes had on the crust punk scene.

It was probably the same all over America, but In my high school during the early to mid 1980's there weren't all to many kids who were keen on underground music. I'm dating myself for sure, but back then you really only had three to four different cliques. You had your Jocks, Preps, Heads(or burnouts), and then the weirdos who didn't fit in anywhere. The later were usually like super smart nerds, or weird artfags(some of whom were punk rockers). I was a metalhead for sure, and most my friends were burnouts who hung out in the smoking area between classes, and during lunch and free periods. The music most of these kids were listening to was stuff like Zepplin, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, etc. There was a small group of us at Shaker that were digging on Newer and more underground metal. Stuff like Exodus, Slayer, Metallica, DRI, COC, Destruction, Venom, etc. Not only did the rest of the school think we were freaks, but the heads we were chillin with thought we were sorta fucked up, and couldn't grasp the music. I recall first discovering Hellhammer, and sort of liking it, but then hearing "triumph of death" and being like, this is noise. "I could play this" I thought to myself. There was a kid I recall, I think his name was Mike Kinny. Mike walked around school with a huge Celtic Frost back patch on his denim jacket. Imagine that in 1984-85. Dude was sort of a loner for sure. So cool...

I was pretty into the death metal, and black metal scenes in the early 90's. Was buying everything, and going to see great shows in the NY area. I think the over production of the stuff is what got me to move on and forget about the scene. Everything started sounding completely dogmatic.
Putrid Mass were from the mid west(some place in Michigan I believe). I got turned onto them by the vocalist of my grind band at the time (Monster X). John our singer was into some pretty cool shit, and would tape trade metal/noise demos from all over the world. I ended up with this one.
I think the shitty raw production is what attracts me to this still to this day. It's not about digital sounds and triggers... just straight up gore core. We actually used to jokingly call them Putrid mess, because of the rawness. Black metal fiends will dig this for sure...
To my knowledge the band only diid one other demo, with no proper releases... a true underground band for sure.

Beherit-the oath of black blood LP (1991)

You won't see much from me up here on my blog from the 1990's.... It would have to be a true essential, as this record is.
I rarely listen to all that much black metal these days, as its become pretty com modified within modern culture to me. Shits become some what of a played joke.
I was however lucky enough to be listening to and turned on to these guys, Burzum, Immortal, Dark Throne, Emperor, Mayhem, etc. in the early 90's, as I was doing a music 'zine (Gloom), and was regularly getting this stuff for review purposes. I remember thinking this stuff was crazy, and automatically thinking back to my high school days of Bathory, Celtic Frost, and Hell Hammer. The recording and vocal styles really make this record. It really does sound like it was recorded in hell.
