Dear Friends,
I hope you are having a good day. I'm posting a little early this week because I plan to take some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope to get some extra naps in and I just know there is going to be extra good food around next week. (I can't wait!) I'll be back the first Friday in December.
I wanted to share some cute vintage cards and postcards with you that feature dogs enjoying Thanksgiving.
Vintage Thanksgiving greeting card -- a dachshund dances with a girl in a pilgrim costume. She's holding a turkey up very high, out of his reach!
A little terrier dog is chased by a turkey on this vintage postcard:
A little girl and two dachshunds meet turkeys on a farm. Those dachshunds look so curious about the turkey!
Vintage greeting card featuring two shaggy terrier dogs who have made a pumpkin house. (It looks very cozy!)
A hound dog watches as a boy says grace at Thanksgiving dinner:
A dog and cat are interested in the turkey that a pilgrim woman is carrying:
However you celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope your day is happy and full of many blessings!
Love,
Abby xoxoxo

Dear Abby - Thankful
Dear Friends,
I just wanted to pause and say THANK YOU to everyone who reads my weekly Dear Abby posts. I appreciate your comments and your friendship, and am grateful to have come to know so many kind and thoughtful people through this blog.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I am grateful too for a happy life as a rescued dog, for a warm, safe place to sleep, and for people who love me (and people I love!). Especially for Momma, who is my special person.
Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving! I will be taking some time off Thanksgiving week, but will return the week after.
Love,
Abby xoxoxo

A happy little dog sits in a chair at Thanksgiving on this postcard. "For what we are about to receive let us be Thankful."
This World War II vintage illustration is from 1945. The family dog helps a mother and her son, a sailor, cook dinner. The illustration is by J.C. Leyendecker.
This illustration, also by J.C. Leyendecker for The American Weekly magazine, shows a little boy carrying a turkey home - although his little terrier dog thinks it is for him. This is a 1950 illustration.
A maid carries a turkey while the family's dog follows eagerly. This illustration is dated 1905.
This postcard depicts a man in Pilgrim clothes bringing a pumpkin and basket of apples home, with the help of his dog.
I hope you enjoyed these vintage Thanksgiving dog pictures. And more importantly, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am grateful for readers and friends here, and look forward to catching up with you again in a couple of weeks.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Abby - Happy Thanksgiving
Dear friends,
I hear that next week is Thanksgiving! That means yummy food and the National Dog Show. It also is a nice reminder to be thankful for good things in our lives.
Readers, I am thankful for YOU. I have loved the wonderful stories and photos you have shared of your fur-kids in Rescue Spotlights and Pet Meet and Greet posts here. I enjoy every single comment that you leave, especially the ones about your pets.
Thank you for visiting my blog and for loving animals and for supporting rescue!
Today I will just share a few vintage Thanksgiving images with you. Above, you will see a girl eating turkey while her dachshund watches. (He has a bone to chew on.) It is a cover illustration of Calling All Girls magazine from the early 1960's.
Below you will find a vintage postcard showing two black and tan dachshunds meeting some turkeys. I wonder how that went?!
This vintage Thanksgiving greeting card features two little puppies playing on a great big pumpkin. That looks like fun!
This is another vintage greeting card (1940's). It shows a little terrier dog actually riding on a turkey!
Thank you again for stopping by! What are you thankful for this year? If you have pets, do they get special treats on Thanksgiving? I'd love to hear from you in the comments, below.
Love,
Abby xoxoxo

Did You Know Tuesday - The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Do you watch the Macy's Thanksgiving parade? I love it and have watched it every Thanksgiving - often, as an adult, scurrying back and forth from the kitchen while cooking.
The Macy's Thanksgiving parade started in 1924 and featured Macy's employees in New York City dressed up in costumes walking the route, as well as riding on some creative floats. Over 250,000 spectators watched the first parade.
Felix the Cat was the first balloon float in 1927. The parade organizers did not have plans to save the balloon after the parade, so they let it just float off.
Artist, puppet designer, and children's book illustrator Tony Sarg designed many of the early balloons. He also did a parade theme window display for the store.
This Tony Sarg designed dachshund balloon was released after the 1929 parade:
The parade became increasingly popular through the 1930's. It was suspended from 1942 - 1944 because of World War II.
The 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street featured Macy's and the parade, and this only added to the parade's popularity. The first television broadcast was in 1948.
This is Frieda the dachshund, from the 1950's parade era:
This Elsie the Cow balloon from the 1963 parade promoted the 1964 - 1965 New York World's Fair:
Betty White and Lorne Green hosted the 1965 parade:
Performances are popular both before the parade and on floats. Classics include the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, high school bands, and of course, the arrival of Santa Claus at the end of the parade.
Do you enjoy the Macy's parade? What are your favorite floats or balloons? I'd love to hear from you in the comments, below.
