Portrait of a Lady

I am often drawn to portraits of women, and I love seeing them used in interiors. It doesn't have to be (and more often is not) someone you know, just an image that "speaks" to you. A vintage painting is always nice, I think, to contrast the more modern elements that a lot of us have in our homes.

Although he is a contemporary artist, David Bromley's "Nudes" series is a favourite of mine.

And Tretchikoff is another favourite, especially Miss Wong.

Anna Spiro created one of her famous picture walls, featuring mostly women, at the Halcyon House restaurant. I sometimes think I should do that with my collection.

Photographs can also be really striking, especially if they're larger than life.

Do you share my love of lady portraits? Which is your fave from the selection above?

Jen Sievers | Artist

It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to my old mate, Jen Sievers. Jen and I worked together in a design and marketing firm back in the day. I knew she was a super talented graphic designer, but what I've recently discovered is that she is an amazing artist too.

From a young age Jen always loved to paint and draw. She started her career with a fine arts degree, and went on to work for 15 years as a graphic designer. Jen's 'Big Magic' moment happened when she and her husband moved out to a semi-rural house in the foothills of the Waitakeres. It was spring time and the beauty of her surroundings inspired Jen to pick up her paintbrush again. Working four days a week as a designer, Jen spends as much time as possible in her studio on Friday through Sunday, and in the evenings (when she's not chasing her beautiful wee toddler around).

Jen paints contemporary abstracts that are fresh, whimsical and drenched in colour. Her aim is to capture movement, draw the viewer in and evoke joy and emotion. I think it's safe to say that she has achieved that, don't you?

You can find some of Jen's acrylic on large canvases at Endemic World, and she may be introducing some of her work in print form too in the near future.

She also has a number of her pieces available on Society6, from prints to tote bags to cushions, and more.

As well as her large canvases, Jen creates small wood blocks that can sit on a bookshelf or be hung on the wall. For more details and to keep up with all the happenings and new work, make sure you follow Jen on Facebook and Instagram. I know I'm excited to see what's next for this fantastic artist.

Art | Rae West

You may remember, when I showed you images of our finished kitchen last year, that I was on the hunt for a piece of art with maximum impact for the wall opposite our back door. Most of our guests use the front door, but the back door is the one that my family and close friends use, and I wanted something amazing to greet us when we entered.

Don't you love those times in your life when things unexpectedly fall into your lap?! Towards the end of last year I got a Facebook message from a local artist, Rae West, introducing herself, and she attached images of some of her pieces. They were amazing, and just what I had been looking for. I arranged to visit Rae's studio and ended up commissioning her to create a piece for our home.

As you can see from my previous blog post I love this colour palette - deep inky blues, turquoise, teal, and just a hint of magenta. I absolutely love my tondo that Rae created. My photos don't do it justice, in reality it's even more rich and mysterious and so striking with a beautiful glossy finish.

Rae has been working in this new medium of acrylic inks and resin for the past year. It really suited the direction she wanted her painting to develop, from the subjective to a more abstract expression of colour. She uses multiple veils of pigment, resin and at times gold leaf which blend and react against each other creating beautiful forms and textures.

If you live in Hawke's Bay you can view the magic of Rae's work for yourself at the a+e gallery on Hastings Street in Napier next month. The Solo Show PULSE will run from the 24th February until the 14th March. Everyone is welcome to come to the opening night from 5-7pm on Wednesday February 24th.

If you're not in the Bay, never fear, here's a full list of galleries that stock Rae West's art:
Black Door Gallery, Parnell  Flagstaff Gallery, Devonport  Moko Gallery, Hot Water Beach  Inspirit Gallery, Cambridge  Soul Gallery, Hamilton  Kura Gallery, Taupo  a+e Gallery, Napier  Ora Gallery, Wellington  Little River Gallery, Christchurch  Vesta Design Store, Queenstown  Art Bay Gallery, Queenstown.

Of course you can also visit Rae in her Clive studio by appointment. You'll find her Fox Street Gallery at 11 Fox Street, Clive - a picturesque part of Hawke's Bay. Phone for an appointment on 021 287 3275 or 06 870 1070, or you can drop her an email - raewest@xtra.co.nz.

Stormy Seas

I spent many hours and days of my childhood playing in the surf at Wainui Beach. As I grew older I became a little intimidated by the ocean and it's strength, but I've never stopped admiring it's beauty. I am drawn to the colours - the glittering turquoise of a calm sea, and the emerald greens and deep teals of a stormy sea.

It's this rich, dark, and moody palette that I'm really loving right now. I love the drama and the sophistication it brings to a room. I would recommend using these colours in a room with plenty of natural light, because you get the most beautiful effect as the light moves and changes in the room. If the room lacks natural light the colour may just appear a bit flat.

Despite the fact that my school uniform was green and blue, I still love this combination in an outfit. Choose shades with some depth for maximum impact.

If you're not sure about using these deeper colours on your wall, start by introducing them in smaller doses. Whenever you're working with colour, whether it's in your home or your wardrobe, make sure it moves you (in a good way). What colours are you drawn to when you enter a shop? What pages stop you in your tracks in a magazine? These are the colours you should be surrounding yourself with.

Hawke's Bay Boutique Shopping Tours

Dael and I hosted our first Bibby + Brady Boutique Shopping Tour recently, and it was a great success. We had an awesome group of ladies who really enjoyed meeting and spending the day with other like-minded people, as well as all the amazing shopping.

The day started at our tiny studio at 9.30am with coffee and food provided by F.G. Smith and an introduction to our work. We have a few bits and pieces for sale, and we also had a small collection of beautiful Mekka products available.

We then headed down the road to Aroha where owner Melaina Newport talked to us about their work, and let us have a sneak peek behind the scenes where artist and co-owner Rakai Karaitiana was hard at work.

Everyone piled into the mini van and we began our road trip heading up the hill to Homebase Collections. The Culy house is one of Napier's heritage homes and is absolutely beautiful. Billie Culy was there to greet us, as Leanne was away that day, and she was delightful, telling the girls all about the artwork and homewares on offer.

Martin and Megan Poppellwell kicked off Fizzy Friday for us in their cool gallery SPA_CE, with a glass of bubbly (sparkling water for me - the downside of being the driver!). Martin's artwork and pottery is so impressive, and Megan talked to us about all of his work as well collaborations, such as rugs and furniture he's worked on.

We then headed out of Napier and over to David Trubridge's studio. It always makes me smile, this amazing building nestled into the rural/industrial setting. David's business manager, Josh Lynch, gave us a really insightful talk about David's background and how the business grew from something small to an internationally renowned brand.

All this shopping makes a girl hungry, so there were much approval when we took everyone into the private conservatory at Birdwoods Gallery in Havelock North. The room was decorated with green palms, pink flamingo sculptures, and tiered plates filled with tiny sandwiches, savouries, and sweets. There was more bubbly to wash everything down, and the gallery and sweet shop provided more shopping opportunities.

The drive from Birdwoods to So Vintage in Te Awanga is such a lovely, scenic one. French-born owner, Mehdi Sanssar had just returned from France where he filled a container with more amazing vintage and antique pieces. He was able to talk to everyone about the pieces they had in-stock, their background, and what was due to arrive in their new shipment.

The tour ended back at the Bibby + Brady studio where last minute shopping and mingling was done. All in all a super fun day and we can't wait for the next one - check the website for upcoming tour dates. Each of our destinations provided something special, including some great discounts exclusive to our shoppers. Everyone felt very special (which is our aim) and each shopper leaves with a guide to "discovering your interior style" and styling tips, so they can put that into practice at home with all their new purchases.

Why not get a few of your friends together and book one of our upcoming tours - you're guaranteed to have a blast, and a group booking discount applies.
