Made It My Own with Annie Sloan

Annie Sloan developed her unique Chalk Paint™ over 20 years ago, and she is now perhaps the world's most respected expert in decorative paint, colours and techniques. With Chalk Paint™ you get a velvety matt finish without the need for tiresome printing and sanding. The paint sticks to just about any surface... wood, concrete, metal, matt plastic, earthenware and more. Add Annie Sloan Soft Wax to achieve a subtle sheen as well as protection and durability.

The colours available and finishes you can achieve are just amazing, and you'll find a fabulous range of tips and techniques on the website. Try two-colour distressing, a smooth, modern finish, or how about the rustic, chippy look.

Everything you'll need for your painting projects can be found on the Annie Sloan website - paint, wax, brushes, stencils, even books and fragrances, and I'm pretty taken with their range of fabrics.

Get inspired by creations and transformations others have achieved with the help of the Annie Sloan range...

And when you're ready to start on your own project, you can share and show off your creative flair and up-cycling skills, as well the chance to win $100's of Annie Sloan prizes. Made It My Own with Annie Sloan is running until the end of September, so there's still time to be a part of it. To find out what's involved and how to enter click here.

Fabric + Furniture Sourcing | Bibby + Brady

A huge part of my and Dael's job as interior stylists is helping clients to choose paint colours, fabric and furniture for their homes and work places. Sometimes a client simply wants us to help them select the right paint colour for their living room walls, or choose a fabric for their bedroom curtains.

We are more than happy to help you put together a colour palette that will work in your home, and we also offer a curtain, blind and cushion making service. With an extensive range of fabrics available to us, there will definitely be something that is just perfect for you. Don't feel you have to live in Hawke's Bay either to use our curtain and blind making service... If you do, we can measure up and install for you, but we've also had curtains and blinds made and shipped to clients outside of Hawke's Bay with great success.

Of course, furniture and accessories are so important in creating an amazing space, so it's lucky that we have an amazing range of suppliers that can help. Just let us know what you're looking for and you can relax while we do all the sourcing for you.

Whether it's a full interior design service you need, or just a roman blind made, we can help, and we promise to only offer you beautiful and stylish options!

Fi's Dining Room | Bibby + Brady

On Friday I posted a living room that Dael & I designed recently for our super cool client, Fi. Today I bring you her dining room. As I mentioned on Friday, the home has amazing bones, but you can see that the red walls combined with all that wood was too overpowering. Some people believe that red stimulates the appetite, hence this is not the first red dining room I've come across. But it's also one of the darkest rooms in this house, so we chose to lighten it with one of our favourite whites - a gentle, fleecy off-white which is lovely with wood tones.

Like me, Fi loves a touch of Bohemia, so we gave her dining room a glamorous ethnic feel.

As is often the case, creating the look doesn't happen instantly. Clients usually purchase their favourite or most needed pieces first. Fi's round table is great, but we felt in this room a rectangular shape would work well. For now her current table still looks fab, and our fave upholsterer, Asha from Little & Fox, covered the chairs in a gorgeous velvet.

Fi has bought one of the amazing brass chandeliers for above the table, it's just waiting to be installed (long story!). We're also still looking for the perfect art piece for above the fireplace, so for now one of Dael's is standing in.

When we work with our Bibby + Brady clients it's very important to us that the interiors we design reflect their owner/s, and I think this is a great representation of Fi - glamorous, worldly, free-spirited and cool! It also has to be functional, and although it's located next to the kitchen, we provided her with additional storage for her glasses, dinnerware etc, and a cute bar cart for when her friends pop over.

We all love the roman blinds we had made from the most beautiful fabric. We have the most brilliant curtain and blind maker, and a huge range of fabrics available to us (just in case you need new curtains and blinds at your place). If you live locally we can also have them installed for you, but we've worked with clients from outside of Hawke's Bay, and have had their curtains shipped to them all made and ready to hang themselves (or by their chosen professional). Don't hesitate to contact Dael or I if you'd like any help with your interiors - both residential or commercial.

Little & Fox Design & Upholstery

In our job as interior designers we get to meet loads of talented people, and at Bibby + Brady we're lucky enough to have built a network of amazing suppliers. One of our favourites is Asha Payton who runs her design and upholstery business, Little & Fox, from her beautiful Te Awanga home. Asha is an inspiration to us, as she successfully runs her business while also taking care of her gorgeous brood of four children - Otis is five years old, Teddy is four years old, and the twins Fox & Pepe (Maori for 'little') are two years old.

Asha has always been artistic and comes from a creative family, but she got to a point in her life when she felt her like her creativity was being stifled. A chance opportunity came about when she wanted to recover an old armchair but found the quotes all too expensive. Somebody recommended a local upholsterer, Beau, whose workshop was next to his home. While the children were being looked after by her husband Joe, or their au-pair, Asha spent as much time as possible at Beau's place where he helped her to recover the chair herself. Now two years later Beau has taught her everything he knows and Asha works alongside him in his workshop doing her own client's projects.

A major influence on Asha was her grandmother, Maddie. She was so trendy, almost before her time, and inspired Asha with her love of colour and beautiful fabric. Her memory lives on in some of her pieces dotted around Asha's home, which is a beautiful and eclectic mix of old and new.

Joe is also very creative and has had a hand in many areas of the couple's home. He made their dining table out of recycled wood, and came up with most of the ideas for their recently renovated bathroom. The vanity is made out of old stadium seats from the Hastings Show Grounds, and the old copper pipes have been reused in the vanity and shower.

Asha's studio is at the front of the house, and this is where clients bring their furniture and ask advice on fabric and colour. With no TV in the house, Asha often spends her evenings on TradeMe, and she loves to op-shop. She searches for pre-loved furniture and homewares and then breathes new life into them with the help of fabric and paint. A range of lacquered lamp bases have proved very popular.

What started out as a hobby, and a way to keep her sanity when the kids were tiny, has blossomed into a booming little business. If you'd like to see more of Asha's work, or contact her about your own upholstery or design projects, pop over to her Little & Fox Facebook page. You can also find her contact details here. I have my own Little & Fox lamp base, as well as a piano stool that Asha recovered in one of my kantha quilts, and cushions made from the leftovers, so I can recommend her with great confidence :)
