Mid Century Style Sofas

I find Pinterest invaluable in my job. I use it for inspiration; to collate and store my favourite images; to create boards for our interior clients' rooms; and to grasp their style through their own boards. If you're not sure of your style start pinning images you're drawn to, and it will naturally start to emerge.

Scrolling through my Living Rooms board you'll find a lot of velvet, and also a lot of similar looking sofas. I love that mid century look with clean lines, a tufted back, and bolster cushions. It's simple, sleek and pretty. It can be more feminine in velvet, particularly pink (yum!), or less feminine in neutrals and leather.

When Dael & I are designing interiors for clients, we always have to take budget into account, and when we're looking for more affordable pieces we always look to Big Save. They have some fantastic furniture pieces for amazing prices, and the Fifth Avenue is a perfect example.

It has that classic look that I love so much, and it's available in a fabric and a leather option, with matching footstools sold separately. The retail price was already great, but right now the Fifth Avenue sofa is on sale, so go and check it out. I love the charcoal fabric option.

Hand Painted Homewares

On a recent trip to India, the team at Big Save sourced a range of cute and colourful hand painted homewares that will brighten up your kitchen and dining room. Each piece is available in white, yellow, and lime, and includes two jugs (one with a lid, one without), a candle holder and a small bowl.

Storage in your kitchen is essential, and although a lot of things are best hidden behind cupboard doors, there are always some beautiful pieces you want to have on display. I love open shelves in the kitchen, and the Big Save homewares would look great mixed and matched like these examples...

Colourful Craze

There's nothing quite as effective as a large floor rug for grounding a space and making it feel cosy. Team that with one of my favourite crazes, wire furniture, and you have the makings of a very cool space.

The team at Big Save Furniture have some very savvy people in charge of their furniture choices, and they're making sure that they have the latest looks, with their customary low low prices. Their chain metal side tables are available in three different styles and colours, and are only $69 - what a bargain.

And look how gorgeous this colourful rug is. Measuring 160 x 230 cm, the pattern is printed on one side and finished with stitched edges. It will bring a beautiful Boho vibe to your room for a staggering $99 (down from $199). Head in to your local store today and see for yourself.

Big Savings on Outdoor Furniture

We've made it to Autumn, which I'm very happy about. I know most people love Summer, but Autumn is my most favourite season. It's still warm during the days, we can still enjoy alfresco dining, jandals are still very much part of my staple wardrobe, but the nights are cooler - great for getting cosy.

Another reason I love the end of Summer is that all the awesome end of season sales start. My friends at Big Save Furniture have slashed all of their outdoor furniture by 50%, and I've been really impressed with their range this year. My favourite is the Millar 3 Piece Setting in yellow. This was a great price at $1,599, but you can now find it in-store for only $799!

And if you're not as yellow-crazy as me, the Millar comes in grey as well.

The Swirl Chair is made from synthetic rattan, making it perfect for outdoor use, but it would also look fantastic indoors with a bright cushion thrown on, or maybe a sheepskin throw. Available in white, blue, yellow, and orange, it's now half price at $299.

Summer is a cute little 3 piece setting comprising of two chairs and a little side table. Once again, I'd add a complimentary cushion, and maybe a G&T on the table to set it off. The set comes in a range of colours - grey, green, orange, teal, and white - and is also half price, now only $199 for the set. That is such a brilliant price!

These have all been great sellers, so if you want to grab a fantastic deal get in-store pronto - there are very limited numbers of each. Happy shopping.

Black, White & Yellow | Three Ways

Black and white is such a classic pairing - it's light and dark, yin and yang, opposites attract. You can't go wrong with black and white, but sometimes you just want to add a splash of colour, and what better colour than yellow?! Yellow and white are so fresh, and yellow and black are strong, but put all three together and it's beautiful harmony. Often all you need is a splash of yellow to add that touch of warmth.

California Dreaming

Your bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture you'll buy. You spend a lot of time in there so comfort is the most important aspect, but close behind is good looks. Because it's the focal point in your bedroom, you definitely want your bed to look good, and I've found one that I think you're going to love...

The California queen slat bed from Big Save Furniture is an absolute beauty. It's soft grey upholstered headboard and base is timeless and sophisticated. It makes the perfect backdrop to so many different looks. I've chosen to dress it up with a slightly Boho feel - a favourite of mine - but the possibilities are endless.

Beautiful Beauty Therapist Space

Talk about a dream job for me... design a waiting area for a beauty therapist. Only a tiny space, it needed to be feminine, fun, pretty, light-hearted - my kind of brief. Perfect timing, Big Save Furniture had just sent me images of some of their new stock, and I knew their Tokyo chair would be perfect for this space.

Atop the Tokyo chairs I used cushions from my Cush & Nooks online shop and Collected. A gorgeous side table* is a glamorous addition. And it's all grounded by an Armadillo Casablanca rug*. A beautiful gold & white wallpaper is a pretty backdrop to the Catherine print and the amazing hot pink & yellow wall sconce light. And a surf spray vase and sky planter are both unique way of introducing flowers to the space. Voilà!

Spring Alfresco

I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this beautiful Spring weather we've been having lately. We spend a lot of time outdoors this time of year, dining alfresco at home, as well as picnics at the beach. I'm starting to think of what we'll need to make these really special times, and have collated a few of my faves...

I love the Hamilton Pot Stands from Freedom. Topped with a coloured pot filled with bright flowers or lush greenery, they will look fabulous on your deck or patio.

Protection for your table, or just another gorgeous injection of pattern, the Printed Wool Felt Coasters from LET LIV will be a welcome addition to your home.

A glossy lacquered Lime Lantern from Redcurrent is gorgeous and fun as well as being practical for your alfresco dining.

You need a large Beach Bag for your picnics and beach trips, and the Naxos from Citta Design is a beauty.

The Nobu Dining Suite from Big Save is a classic staple for a New Zealand home, and provides the perfect base for your outdoor living.

Spring & Summer wouldn't be complete with some outdoor stripes, so don't go past the Weekender Stripe Cushion from Freedom.

And the most perfect picnic blanket ever will soon be available from the Cush & Nooks online shop. Large enough to fit you and your extended family, they have a canvas backing perfect for picnics, and roll up to a handy carry size with handles. I'll be telling you more about these soon, once I've got them loaded into the shop.

Scandi Style

Scandinavian style is incredibly popular both here in New Zealand, and world wide. The clean lines and simple colour palette create a serene and stylish interior. Black and white is widely used in Scandi interiors, and I love the addition of dusty pinks and light wood tones to soften the look and add warmth.

Using a little bit of Photoshop magic I've whipped up an example for you. You can't beat white walls and blonde wood floors to start with, then add soft grey sofas as your base -
I've used the Oscar 2 + 3 seater from Big Save Furniture. Layer with cushions, art and cute accessories to complete the look.

Cushion Round Up

It's no secret that I am slightly obsessed with cushions! They're such a brilliant way to introduce colour and my beloved pattern into a room. Mix them up, change them around,
get new ones when you want a fresh look. So I've selected a few of my favourites to show you. They're being modeled on the Big Save Furniture 3 + 2 seater Barletta sofas. These are gorgeous 100% leather available in loads of different colours.

Office/Spare Room

I've been working on a job for a Bibby + Brady customer who wanted us to update their spare room into a spare room/office. She needed a place to work, somewhere she could close the door and remove herself from the rest of home life. But they still needed the room to accommodate guests, as they often had friends from out of town stay with them. A young, fun couple we wanted to keep it fresh, and a space she'd enjoy being in.

Because it's not a big room we chose a sofa bed and a simple desk as the main pieces of furniture. The desk's clean lines with two hidden drawers means that it's practical and doesn't take up too much visual space. The sofa is a very cool shape, a great place to relax with a cuppa in between jobs, and folds down into a bed when they need it - Love it!

Make it Pop

One of the most effective ways to make colours "pop" is to layer them over black. Choose pure, vivid colours to contrast with black, charcoal, or deep blue - it will look amazing!

A Little Bit Boho

I was pretty excited to see that one of my favourite Armadillo & Co rugs, Casablanca, now has a multi-colour option. You can pick your favourite colours and combine them in a stunning rug that is like a piece of art for your floor.

I decided to take the Oscar 3 + 2 seater lounge suite from my friends at Big Save Furniture, and see how it looked with a Casablanca rug in shades of grey and pink. With an eclectic mix of pieces, it has a bit of a Boho vibe, which I love. Get the look with a Freedom coffee table, and cushions from Lorna Love, and Superette.

Contact me for any enquiries about Armadillo rugs.

Collaboration with Big Save Furniture

You may remember earlier this year when I did a blog post on some Big Save rugs that looked fantastic in my friend's home. Well that was a Friday post, and that weekend Big Save sold, let's say, a LOT of rugs. I was so chuffed that you guys responded so well to the feature, and so were Big Save. I think the reason for the success was showing how great their products look when styled in a 'real' situation, mixed in with other pieces.

This week Big Save have launched their new website, which is fun, colourful, easy to navigate, and great for seeing individual product. I'm now working with the amazing Big Save team on a regular basis, bringing you a new "Look Book" each month.

The Look Books are all about taking one or more pieces of Big Save furniture and creating a 'virtual' look - giving you ideas of how to mix and match them with other products. The first look I styled uses the Devon Corner Suite and Frisco Coffee and Lamp Tables.

Another fun part of the website is the "Have You Seen This" section.

Here you'll find examples of Big Save products featured in the media. For example, the June issue of Your Home & Garden has a fabulous article on one of my favourite interior designer's gorgeous home. Alex Fulton has used two Big Save rugs in her home, and they look amazing.

So make sure you check out Big Save's new website for yourself, and come and see my new looks each month.

The Mighty Jungle

You know I'm all about colour and pattern here at Cush & Nooks, therefore I'm happily embracing the animal print revival, both in the home and in the wardrobe. Throw in a splash of leafy green for a true jungle experience.
