No Ordinary Anniversary!

Friday, 21 August 2015

Hi all :)

I had a lovely holiday away with my folks and sister - first time away with them in over a decade! We were in a lovely part of Germany called Ruhpolding, away up in the Alps!  We had a bit of a hairy landing as we arrived just in the middle of a thunder storm and it was quite turbulent!  Just as the wheels of the plane were about to hit the runway, the plane took a bit of a dive to the right - I could see that the wing must've been only inches from hitting the ground!  Thankfully the pilot managed to straighten up and we lived to tell the tale, but it was scary biscuits!  We then weren't allowed to disembark the plane until the storm passed as the ground crew weren't allowed out during it!
Ruhpolding is in the south of the country so we were able to spend a day in each of Munich (Germany) and Salzburg (Austria) - I absolutely loved Salzburg, such a beautiful city and it seemed really relaxed there.  It helped with the atmosphere that there was a "Busker" playing classical music in the middle of Mozart Square, and he was brilliant!  Loved it!  We also went to The Eagles Nest, even higher up in the Alps which is where Hitler used as a retreat and for entertaining visitors.  It was amazing up there too, even though it is very much a tourist attraction now, you still get an eerie vibe of the history of the place.  The views are spectacular though!

Anyway, it's that time again when we get to use another letter of the alphabet to challenge you through the power of The Alphabet Challenge Blog!  We're up to N already and the theme for the next 2 weeks is...

N for No Patterned/Designer Paper!

Great challenge as I love my papers!
We also have a DT call at the moment - until the 30th, so make sure you check that out and get your name in as it's a lovely place to be!

Here's my card:

I was asked to make a card for a priest who is a friend of the family and was about to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his ordination.  I must admit that I felt a bit stumped!  What do you do for a priest?!!  I'm not a religious person at all, so I'm not up on bible quotes etc, but I do have a few stamps that could be classed as "Holy"!  So I got stuck in!
I decided that a black and white colour theme was the way to go and just used some plain black pearl card which I layered up onto a white and another black layer, which then went onto the white card base.  I made a square in Microsoft Powerpoint the same size as the top black layer would be and typed out and positioned the text where I wanted it.  I then printed it directly onto the black card - the fact that the card is pearlescent is important as it means the ink takes a while to dry and you therefore have time to use embossing powder on it!  You do still need to work quickly though!  You also need to make sure you use an embossing buddy over the card before you put it through the printer as white embossing powder on fingerprints on black card is not a good look!  After I heated it and allowed it to cool, I cut it to size and layerd it up.

I used a cross stamp from a Stampin' Up! set that I have called "Special Blessings" along with the same white detail embossing powder that I used for the printed sentiment onto black card.  Again, I layered the cross onto white card before adding it to the card base.

I used stamps from the same set as the cross for the sentiment on the inside and kept it really simple with just black and white card.

I die cut a couple of 2's and 5's for the front using Memory Box's "Typewriter Number" die set.  I also couldn't resist adding a few diamante's here and there!

I hope you can join us at the Alphabet Challenge Blog and don't forget to enter for the DT call!

Chalkboard or Blackboard??!

Tuesday, 26 August 2014

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all well.  Have you all managed to avoid being nominated yet?  For the ice bucket challenge?  I think I may have an imminent nomination heading my way, my sister has just been challenged but hopefully she'll take pity and vote elsewhere!!  I don't know how my pain and aches would cope with a bucket of icy water, the dip in the temperature weather-wise has been tough enough.  I'll wait with baited breath!

We have a new challenge up today at the Creative Card Crew blog and our sponsor for this fortnight is Die R Us
http://www.diesrus.com/
They're offering a $10 voucher to our lucky winner!

The challenge we have set for you is...

Chalkboard!

I grew up calling it a blackboard and I think it's a whatever-side-of-the-Atlantic-you're-on thing!  It's a technique I haven't tried before and I'm not sure if I did it right but here it is anyway...

I used pearly black card and ran it through my printer which I had set at high quality so as the ink would stay wet for longer as I wanted to throw some white embossing powder at it!  I also pawed all over the card before I printed on it as I wanted some stray ep this time.  The font I used for the "Happy Birthday!" is called Bleeding Cowboy.  I added a frame around the writing on Powerpoint too.  I had crocheted some hearts and flowers and I thought they'd be a nice addition to my card in their nice bright colours.  (Sorry for the blurry pic, it looked OK til I enlarged it!)

The ribbons and Prima gem/pearl swirls are from my stash and match the colours of the crocheting nicely.

I put a modern school twist on the inside and made it into a whiteboard - you don't find many black-boards in schools these days! lol!  The sentiment is a stamp from the Whimsy Stamps Film Strip Sentiments set.

So join us, do, at the Creative Card Crew (that rhymes!) and let us see your idea of a chalk/black board, and make sure you check out what the rest of our clever design team did (including a guest designer this time!).  Let me know, too, if you call it a chalk-board or a black-board, just for my own amusement!

I'd like to enter my card in the following challenges:

Crafty Ribbons Challenge; Celebrate with ribbon
Cute Card Thursday; Back to school (I hope a black-board counts?!)
Dream Valley Challenges; Flowers
Sweet Pea Stampers; Embossing
The Pink Elephant; Anything goes
