Autumn at the lakes

Nedre Rudasjön
The Rudan nature reserve in Handen is a favorite of mine. If you don't believe me, press here. This is a view over the Lower Lake, Nedre Rudasjön. It is very popular with anglers in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. And with ice fishers during the Winter. There are six jetties around the lake from where they can fish, (although one was missing, probably to be replaced because of its recent wobbliness). On this visit I spotted only three people fishing and I said hello to one of them as he passed me by as I took this photo.

Häringe

Tree stump Flower Bobäcken
Three photos from a recent visit to the Häringe-Hammersta nature reserve. It is that place with the many oaks and the impressive view from the lookout point that I have shown you a few times. One of my favorite places in Haninge. The last photo shows Bobäcken, I snapped that photo from a little bridge. It is a great place for birdwatching.

Kalkberget

Egelsviken Himmerfjärden A good place for some coffee A close call The bay A calming view
This was the third hill I climbed during my hill-climbing week. And the one that was furthest away. It took maybe 90 minutes to get here by car, and that included a short ferry ride at Skanssundet. These photos show the Egelsviken bay and the bigger Himmerfjärden bay from the Kalkberget hill. This is an old limestone quarry at the island of Mörkö. Today a nature reserve with a marked trail up on the hill and through the forest. I was there with one of the usual suspects. We enjoyed coffee looking at the view in the top photo before walking on. I will remember this as the first "Summer" day of the year as it was around 15C from a clear blue sky and I was in my Summer uniform! I took the official route snapping away as I walked. My buddy of the day took another way over the hill but when we compared stories later we both met just one other person up on the hill, a photographer who was busy not looking at the view but crawling on all four shooting macro-images of anemones.

View From A Hill

Nynäshamn Water Tower Gröndalsviken Gröndalsviken Sågen
I visited three nature reserves last week. In three different municipalities. And climbed up three hills. This was the second one. At Käringboda in Nynäshamn. It was a great Spring day, perfect for a combined bike ride/trek. This hill can be found at Sågen, overlooking the Nynäsviken Bay. The view back towards Nynäshamn is well worth the climb. On my way up I scared away a white-tailed eagle. These houses are located at Gröndalsviken and shows pretty well the differences in houses in this port city. I shot the last photo down by the water and it shows the hill that I climbed.

A walk around a lake

Sumpen Boardwalk Lissmasjön Lissma Park WWII History Duckboard Bird Watching Tower Bird Tower View Lissmadalen Tvillingträd Nybygget I decided to go for a walk around a lake recently. In the neighboring municipality Huddinge. The lake is called Lissmasjön. There are a couple of farms nearby. It is in a nature reserve these days. It's a short walk, around 3km. I started my walk at an abandoned cottage known as Sumpen, back in the day it was home to the farmworkers. From there walked down to the lake via the boardwalk. You have a great view of the lake from there. If you enjoy miniature golf, flea markets or classic car meets Lissma park would normally be a good place for you to visit. I then continued to one of the old farm buildings where I got an interesting history lesson. Many Soviet soldiers fleeing from prison camps in Europe during WWII fled to Sweden. Some of them ended up in internment camps like this one at the Lissma farm. It was all very hush-hush. In reality, the camp was run by the NKVD that later became the KGB. The camp closed in 1946. Many of the soldiers that were sent back to the Soviet Union ended up in the Gulag. During their stay here the prisoners that included opera singers and Kosack dancers set up dances and concerts. I should point out that this building at the farm was not used by the prisoners. My walk continued on duckboards over to the bird tower from where you had another view over the little lake. Following the path, I walked into a cow pasture where I snapped the tree photo, before walking past the farm with the unusual name Nybygget.

Cigarette Butt Pier

Nedre Rudasjön Cigarette Butts
Ah, how lovely, nothing better than the smell of toxic waste when you visit the lakes! Left there by the anglers who seems to be very environmentally friendly. This was the smell at one of the piers at the Lower Lake at the Rudan nature reserve a couple of days ago.

A Traquil Day At The Lakes

A Traquil Day At The Lakes
I stopped for a light lunch at the lakes at the Rudan nature reserve today. Warm and sunny, no wind at all. A fine Autumn day.

An Autumn Promenade

Autumn Green Umbrellas on the beach A Sign of Spring... The Hugly Fungi Yellow on Red
This is what I found in the forest yesterday. I decided to take a Thursday Walk, and picked the Rudan nature reserve for the promenade. The surprise of the day was the wood anemone, which is your typical Spring flower. The hugly fungi grew next to the anemone, which in turn grew next to the other fungi. I named that photo Umbrellas on the beach.

A Little Tarn

A Little Tarn Madame's pixie cup
Tornberga, (the hill with the tower), was made a nature reserve a few years ago. This little tarn a hundred meters from the top of the hill is known as Tornbergasjön. I used to come here as a kid with my parents. It was always fun balancing on the foot-bridges. Back then there was a tower on the hill. In fact there used to be two towers. At 111 meters above sea level it is the highest point on Södertörn. During WWII my paternal grandfather sat in one tower spying for foreign war planes. As a teenager I visited the tarn with my friends. We used to camp here and sing songs by the open fire at night. Both towers are long gone, but a new one will be built here this year. Hopefully you will be able to see both the archipelago and Stockholm from the new tower. Walking in the wetland at the tarn I found this kochenillav, or Red pixie cup, (lichen), growing in the bryophyte. It's a only a few millimeter wide. Obviously it began to rain the second I started shooting.

More signs of spring

A sign of Spring? Vitsippa
I decided to take the steel horse through the nature reserve Gullringskärret yesterday. The reason for that this time was that every Spring millions of wood anemones turns the green fields and pine forest white here. It's always a spectacle to see and there's even an organized tour for people who wants to do just that. But I was a few days early and although I did find a few flowers, this was the scene that awaited me. A stolen, dumped and burned car. I reported it to the municipality and have already got two answers so I'm guessing the wreck will be gone later today.

The Smiling Skier

The Smiling Skier
Thanks to the recent cold spell the ski club at the Rudan nature reserve have been able to start the snow cannons. On my visit to the lakes the other day they had created a short ski track. It is only 700 meters long but if you like cross-country skiing and live in Stockholm it is one of the few places with snow at the moment. I took a bunch of photos using the panning technique. Shot with the pancake lens so I had to stand close to the track on the icy grass. One skier asked if I was from the local paper and I told her that I might send them a few snaps.
