elephant parade

I haven't been doing the block party so far this year, but that doesn't mean I haven't be playing on my own! I mentioned earlier that the elephants were going to be my birthday block for a little swap group I'm in, and so here's the finished top: I adore these guys! Now I just have to find the perfect baby to finish it for... Julie

Elephants on Parade

I haven't been participating this year in the block party...just "too many irons in the fire" at the moment.
But I always check in and see what you're up to :)
I was recently at a quilting retreat and one of the quilters (Helen Meyer) happened to be working on a friday block party project! I asked her permission to post a photo for you to see her "elephants on parade".
The Daddy elephant is the 10" block pattern from week 2. She reduced the pattern by 20% on graph paper and used templates to make the Mommy elephant. Then she reduced the pattern even more and made the baby elephants by paper piecing. However, with paper piecing, the block was reversed, so then the baby elephants weren't following the parade! These blocks are just so adorable...the photo doesn't do them justice. There will be some kind of sashing added and a scrappy border. It will be a great quilt for a youngster. Great job Helen!

Kathie's Elephant - Week 2

This was out of the ordinary for the Friday Block Party, and was a fun block to add to my pile. When I saw the title Elephant, I immediately thought of a White Elephant and went in that direction. I'd love to do more animal blocks. Thanks June. Kathie L in Allentown

elephants!

I've been missing from the party for some time now, but had to jump back in for this block! In fact I've signed up to use it as my birthday block in a little exchange group, so next month I should have cool dozen to put together. I can't wait!

Ellie - Week 2

I just couldn't resist. Had to make this block right away. As you can see, my elephant is facing the other way. That's because I paper pieced it. I should have reversed everything, but I decided it would be okay this way too. Thanks June!

June's Week 2 - Elephant

I finished my elephant block!

So can confirm the directions on the Milk and Honey blog are very clear!

I took pictures of the steps I followed as I was sewing...  It was really fun to see the animal picture start to appear.

2011 Week 2 - Elephant

This year, every few weeks the weekly block will be an animal or picture block. So think ahead on which fabrics you will be using.

If you want to perhaps put the blocks together in one charity or baby quilt you will have one look if the backgrounds are all the same color fabric, or you could also have mostly the same fabric for the picture but have the background be different, or of course you could go scrappy for both the background and the picture.

We'll do around 12 of these.

The first block comes from the Milk and Honey Quilts blog.

She has a PDF explaining how to make this sweet elephant block.
