HOORAY - I AM UP TO DATE

I have been steaming away at my sewing machine this week, and it has paid off, because I am right up to date with all the blocks now, I just have to make the one that was loaded today. To say I have a BIG smile on my face is putting it mildly!!!!

Nelson's Victory

The black fabric I chose for the corner posts is a batik with tiny twinkling silver stars.

Giraffe's Victory

Here is week 38. I made this and week 41 for Sunshine (quilts for kids). Another quilter collects blocks and will be combining these with many others to make some knock-out quilts. Week 38 was quick to put together. Week 41 was NOT. I won't be making another week 41 any time soon. Too putzy for my liking. I like 'em quick and easy.

Major Catch-up!

September was a busy month, with an out-of-town visitor and two weeks of travel -- so I fell woefully behind. But I'm happy to say that I'm now almost caught up! Here they are in order:

Northumberland Star -- week 33: I hated making this block, and I don't think there's enough value contrast between the red and the brown.
Rally Round -- week 34: I decided that the 9" blocks are now going to be made with Asian fabrics. This one was a pain to make, too, mostly because I did the little triangles wrong the first time -- but I really love the way it came out!
Castle in the Air -- week 35: One of my favorite blocks. Maybe it's the name?
Hope of Hartford -- week 37: I LOVE this block!
Nelson's (spotty) Victory -- week 38: easy to make, but I don't see much potential for it in a scrappy quilt.
Fool's Square -- week 39: I sort of like the "transparency" effect in this one but other than that I think it's sort of clunky...
Now I'm just missing weeks 29 and 36 -- maybe by next weekend I'll be done with all of them.

Victorious Fool in Hartford

Here are the last three weeks worth of blocks done during the wee hours this morning.

Week 39~ Fool's Square-Made with leftover half square triangles and 2&1/2" squares from my scrap bin. It goes with nothing and will be added to my growing collection of orphans.

Week 38~ Nelson's Victory-Or maybe I should call it Nelson in Drag! Very feminine fabrics. I made this with leftovers again so it measures 8" and I didn't bother reading the directions.

Week 37~Hope of Hartford-I'm hopeless. For this one I carefully read the directions and followed them.....I thought. Somehow my color placement ended up wrong and the darn thing is spinning in reverse. Oh well, just hold it up to a mirror and it will be correct.

At least I got through all three of these block without ever using my seam ripper. That's a major accomplishment for me!

Two Blocks - Nelson's Victory

This week's block - quick and easy! I made the 12in. one first. After seeing some of the other blocks on this Party, I got inspired and decided to make another block with some fun fabric in the corners. I made that one in a 9in. size - to go with my other 9in. kid blocks.

Lord Nelson Conquered and Resurrection

PICT0010

Riley is showing how to make sure Lord Nelson doesn't escape the photography session. I think I've made this before for a swap of some kind but I can't remember. Nice and simple block though.

Speaking of nice and simple, the other block is Envelope Motif from week 28. I declared it dead to me at the time because I was having all kinds of problems making the units the right size. Today though it was well behaved and gave me no problems whatsoever.

Nelson Goes Funky

I hope I'm not disrespecting anyone by making Nelson funky. It was just using up some pre-cut squares that I had since it was getting late and I didn't want to start cutting fabric. I didn't have any red, white and blue pre-cut squares so it was a matter of what was on hand that I had enough of that went together. I can tell it was getting late since I didn't even manage to photograph the block straight. I guess it's time for bed.

Nelson got confused on the way to victory

I made this block twice, using pre-cut 3.5 inch squares and just cutting the larger squares for the centre pinwheels. In the one at the left, I got mixed up between the time I read the directions and cut the fabric, so I have light/dark values in the pinwheel. I made another one with equal values in the pinwheel. Which do you prefer? I like both.

I pieced these first as four-patches, then as the bigger four patches. I realized along the way that each four patch is really a modified attic window, so if you're good at mitering corners, you might want to try constructing it that way and saving on some seaming. Of course, since I was in the scrap basket for this project, I didn't do it that way.

week 38

This week's block is back to being 12" :-)
