Back-up to Catch-up

Well, here I am again. The Big Behind. I've been sewing up a storm but not on Friday Blocks. I'm determined to do all 52 blocks during the year so in an effort to catch up yet again, I am going backwards until I get to one I've already made. (I just took a peek and realized I'm 10 weeks behind! Aaack!)

Week #35-Castle in the Air
Pretty straight forward block made with scraps laying on my cutting table.

Week #34-Rally Round
That center part was a pain to do. I like the block, though, just not enough to make
a bunch for a whole quilt top. Maybe a table runner...hmmmm

Week #33-Northumberland Star
I agree with QP that the pressing directions on this were bad. My poor presser foot struggled to get over those seems. I decided right at the start not to try to keep the plaids going in one direction. Good thing! It was hard enough to keep all the parts in the right position. I would have gone crazy trying to match plaid direction, too. Although I like this block, I can't imagine making more than one.

Week #32-Mosaic 3
A truly uninspiring block. I almost skipped it but I wanted to try the flying geese method. It's actually pretty slick. This block took all of 15 minutes to make, a record for me.

I've been reading all the posts as I go backwards and I love all the fabric choices and helpful hints. It also makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one that gets behind. So with 4 done, I have 6 more to go. If you don't hear from me in a week, send the paramedics. I'm probably drowning under a sea of scraps!

Playing catchup again

I've been using my sewing time to work on a few projects so I knew I was getting a bit behind on these blocks. But I was shocked to realize that I was 5 weeks behind! I'm going to get caught up now.

Here are weeks 31, 32, and 33 (clockwise from top left).

weeks31-33

Week 31 is made with some horrible vegetable fabric. This must have spontaneously generated in my stash because I've never seen it before and I know that I wouldn't have bought anything like it. It looks much better cut up into small pieces.

Week 32 was a nice simple block. I made it with 3d flying geese to add some texture.

I actually followed the quilter's cache instructions for week 33. I usually do anything to avoid sewing triangles together. I realized how rarely I use written directions. As I was sitting at the computer taking notes on what sizes to cut, my boyfriend walked by and asked if I was cheating. I had to explain that it is ok to use directions even if he'd never actually seen me do it before.

Just two more to go and I'll be all caught up.

Giraffe's Mosaic 3

I made week 32, Mosaic 3, a little bit by accident. I had a few leftover HSTs and started playing with settings... and then I realized that I was coming very close to what Mosaic 3 looked like.. so I made it and counted it. Originally I was going to upsize Mosaic 3 to a 12-incher, but with my leftover pieces it was a perfect 8-incher as the pattern calls for.

I am calling myself caught up. Whew! Even though I haven't made all the blocks, I have made all I'm going to (my new plan is only to make the 12-inch patterns)... this week's just takes too much thought, so I'm going to skip it.

Vicki's Mosaic 3

Here is this week's block and I actually used the instructions that were given for the block. I did notice a bit of stretching but overall not bad.

I also want to give the gals on this blog a heads up that I'm having my 100th giveaway post tomorrow on my blog http://felinesandfibrearts.blogspot.com/ . It will be posted sometime in the early evening (EDST) after I get home from work. So if what I'm giving away is of interest please feel free to enter and I will ship to international locations.

two more...

Finally almost caught up again -- this is Envelope Motif
And this week's Mosaic 3. Not too excited about either of these...

The only one I have left to do is Mrs. Morgan's Choice -- those funny windmill blades. I really don't like that one at all and it might be the one that gets omitted from the otherwise full set!

Week 32

Somehow I managed to get the right hand side of this week's block reversed!

Dutchman's Puzzle - A Week 32 Variation

I finally did it!
It's a good thing I went to bed last night instead of starting this block. It wasn't until I was lying in bed this morning that I realized the 'geese' parts of Dutchman's puzzle all had to be a predominant colour and all the other pieces a background colour.
So I made the 5 1/4 pieces out of blues and all the rest out of the yellow.
I really like this new method! Waiting with interest to see what others have to say about it.

Trying for Dutchman's Puzzle, but.......

I wanted to try this block again, but doing a variation of it this time. The flying geese reminded me of Dutchman's Puzzle and that is what I was trying to make. But I should have known my layout wasn't right. It went together too easily. Oh, well. The instructions for speed piecing this block are amazing. So back to the drawing board, or sewing machine in this case. I am going to try again. Be back in half an hour....... Actually I'm kidding. I think I ate something that is not agreeing with me and I feel awful. I'm going to bed now and will do the DP tomorrow.

rearranged week 32

I went for a different arrangement of the flying geese than this week's block pattern :-)

I did however make the geese using the instructions for the block and all I can say is "Wow, What an easy way of making flying geese!"

This block finished about 1/4 inch small, and given that I used my "new to me" featherweight for it I'm pleased. There are no markings on the throat plate and I'm still learning to judge the seam allowance, so coupled with a new technique for making flying geese, all turned out fine...

Mosaic 3 and Maybe 4

Okay. For Vicki and everyone else who was looking at this block and wondering if the instructions were going to work: Let me just say....Yes! Hurray! They worked! This block went together in no time. I used soft colours without a lot of contrast. That was on purpose. I figured that the points wouldn't show so much if I didn't get them bang on. But it really wasn't necessary. I think I might do this block again and arrange the geese in a different layout. I guess I am waiting to see what others are doing with it - just to get some ideas.

All in all I am pleased with it! Quick and easy!

week 32

This week's block is Mosaic 3, an 8 inch block with flying geese and half square triangles.... yikes!
