Funkie Junkie Focus – Tim Holtz Christmas Cards

Hello there, Christmas is almost here! Crafting is continuing around here at a breakneck speed ha ha. Our focus for this time is 'Tim Holtz Christmas, Anything Goes'. I found myself in need of some extra Christmas cards so I got going…

Time is valuable right now so I utilized a "use what I have ready" method. The 3-D embossed backgrounds were extras from a previous project. Couldn't let those go to waste! They were the perfect backgrounds for layering lots of Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera and die cuts. (I also have a box of extra die cuts so those were all ready to go too.) Efficient creating is a must five days before Christmas. ;-)

I really love the Tree Rings and Pine Branches 3-D Texture Fade embossing folders. 

My Tim Holtz ephemera stash is a mix of years past and present so I'm not sure if this deer is in the current 2022 pack. There are plenty of great images in each years' collection though so no worries.

The background is Opaque Distress Crackle Paste applied through the Festive Layering Stencil. When dry, I added Distress Holiday Mica Stains for color and shimmer.

The embossed pine branches are highlighted with the pearlescent Seasonal Distress Crayons.

The Christmas Paper Dolls are so cute to use on cards as well. If time wasn't so short, I would have colored them using the new Distress Watercolor Pencils. Compromises must be made in times of need!

Here are a few peeks at the behind the scenes. Mostly it's a matter of pulling everything out, digging through piles and playing around with elements until I'm happy.

I did prepare all the card bases first:

I cut the leading edges of the cards using the Deckle Torn Edge Trimmer. I think it gives it a nice finished look.

Tim Holtz Christmas Stampers Anonymous - A Festive Collage Card

Hello, Lisa Hoel here and welcome to the current Product Focus! We are taking a look at Tim Holtz's 2022 Stampers Anonymous Christmas stamps. There are some great new sets released this season and I used one of my favorites (Festive Collage) to create a Christmas card.

I created lots of layers for this card! Let's take a look:

Step 1 - I used the new Pinecones stencil to create the background layer. I used Heavystock as my substrate and did one piece with Opaque Crackle Paste and one piece with Translucent Crackle Paste. I wanted to compare the two and wasn't sure which I wanted to use in my card.

Step 2 - I spritzed each piece with Antique Linen, Old Paper and Tea Dye Distress Stains as well as Fresh Balsam Mica Stain. The Opaque paste resists the stains more than the Translucent. I decided to go with the Translucent piece for my card.

Step 3 - The next layer was a piece embossed using the 3D Tree Rings Folder. The next was a Heavystock Tag to do my stamping on. I prepped it by smooshing Oxide Iced Spruce and Antique Linen onto the tag.

Step 4 - Stamping! Using a stamping platform, I first stamped my image with Archival Black Soot ink. Then I used some of the Seasonal Pearlescent Distress Crayons like watercolors to color the image in. (Scribble on a craft sheet and use a water brush to pick up the color and paint.) When the crayon was dry, I stamped again over the top with Black Soot to make the details of the stamped image crisp again.

Step 5 - I used the Vintage Labels Die Set to make a little label to stamp the sentiment on (from the Darling Christmas stamp set).

Saturday Showcase - Vintage Christmas Cards With Tim Holtz Idea-ology Worn Wallpaper

Hello and welcome to Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. Our latest challenge is called 'Lovely Leaves', and I've made a vintage Christmas card for my DT project featuring Ideaology Christmas Worn Wallpaper by Tim Holtz and several of his Christmas foliage Thinlits die sets. The gorgeous designs on these papers are reminiscent of vintage Christmas cards and wrappings with the texture and feel of old wallpaper. I would love to wall paper my home in them, but for now, I've just made some Christmas cards.

Let's get started making!

1. Trim and die cut an oval from one of the Christmas Wallpapers using a Stitched Ovals Thinlits die. Set oval aside for a future use.
2. Smear Wallpaper panel randomly with Crazing and set aside to dry.

3. Die cut the smaller of the two greetings from Christmas Ribbon Thinlits from red card and a second one from white card that has been blended with Old Paper Distress ink.
4. Heat emboss white greeting with Versamark ink and clear powder. Glue this one to red greeting using Distress Collage Medium Matte. Set aside to dry.

5. Trim remaining red card from die cutting Merry Christmas to make first layer. Trim a watercolor paper panel to use as a background to the Wallpaper panel.
6. Using the stamp platform, stamp the wood image from Tim Holtz Lumberjack stamps set in Frayed Burlap ink two times on dampened trimmed water color paper panel. Spritz card with water to blend the join line a little. Dry with heat tool.
7. Ink music image from the old Music & Advert stamp set with Pumice Stone ink. Blot some of the ink from the stamp with a paper towel, and make that impression at the center of the panel. Dry. Blend panel with Frayed Burlap ink. Splash with water droplets and dry. Adhere to red card.

8. Die cut smaller pine branch and pine cone from the Pine Branch Thinlits set, pine bough and holly sprig from the Funky Festive Florals Thinlits set and a couple of small leafy branches from the  Festive Greens Thinlits set. I used various scraps for this, including watercolor paper, pre-colored and stamped scraps and plain colored cardstock. Using the Sizzix Chrome Precision Base Plate for Thinlits to cut intricate die cuts and the brushy tool make easy work of this.

9. Color pine cones, pine needles/boughs and holly leaves with Distress Oxides and inks. Heat dry and shape as you are drying. The holly berries were cut from a scrap previously colored with red ink; I think it may be Candied Apple.

10. Machine emboss ribbon from Festive Greens and die cut from Metallic Kraft Stock. While the die cut is still in place, sand, allowing just the high spots to be sanded. Remove the die cut and sand just the edges of the bow and tips of the ribbon with a nail file.
11. Drip bow with Smolder Alcohol Pearl and allow to dry. This adds instant vintage aging to the bow.

12. Scribble Wallpaper panel (previously smeared with Crazing in step 2) with  Frayed Burlap and Vintage Photo Distress Crayons and smooth into the cracks with a damp finger. Rub outer edges and oval rim with Ground Espresso crayon.
13. Assemble card using Collage Medium Matte to adhere all surfaces.

Here are a few tricks I used on the second card...

To add dimension to the frame, I found some corrugated card in the approximate size of my Worn Wallpaper frame to give some body to the wallpaper and add depth to the card. I used the ovals die and my kraft knife to cut the correct sized aperture. I sponged Ground Espresso paint around the edges so the bright color didn't show after assembly.

 I cut a portion of Merry Christmas 5 times, and adhered them to the original die cut to add depth and support the die cut within the recess.

Here is a set of A2 sized cards I made using the Christmas Worn Wallpaper. It was so easy to throw these together start to finish in less than a couple of hours with the help of a Tim Holtz die cut snowflake, Christmas Paper Dolls, Ephemera and Snippets and some sprinkles of Distress Clear Rock Candy Glitter. Everything was given a worn vintage look with the help of Frayed Burlap and Vintage Photo inks. I'm showing a couple close-ups so you can see the snowy detail.

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Whimsy Decor Vintage Baubles

Hi everyone and welcome. Jenny here with the latest in the Saturday Showcase series here at Frilly and Funkie. This is where we take time to shine a spotlight on some of the products available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. As the countdown to Christmas is now well under way I thought I would share a tutorial for creating cards using some of Tim Holtz latest Sizzix Alterations die sets.

Going in search of inspiration I found this picture of vintage baubles that reminded me of some my Mum used to hang on our tree when I was younger. They were brightly coloured over a silver base with a retro design and glittered patterns. This got my head whirring with 'what if' ideas. Reaching for Tim's new 'Whimsy Decor' dies I made baubles with a similar style to them and used them to top some simple Christmas cards which can be seen below (click on each image for a closer look);

I took photos along the way when creating these to show you exactly how they came together.

The Tutorial

Start by sorting the various bauble pieces in the Whimsy Decor die set into piles using the packaging picture as a guide. Cut pieces of silver Metallic Kraft Stock large enough to cut all the pieces three times as shown below.

Beginning with the first bauble colour the surface of each of the pieces of Metallic Kraft Stock with Alcohol Inks using a standard felt applicator. In this case the colours I used were Stream, Lettuce and Shell Pink. With the deeper colours like Stream I found it only takes one layer to get a good coverage but with the lighter colours like Shell Pink I reapplied the ink a couple of times to get a deeper shade.

Repeat the process for the smallest of the baubles; I used an older colour, Raisin (Cranberry would be a perfect substitute) and Valencia and then left one piece un-inked.

Finally repeat the process for the last of the baubles; I used Meadow, Red Pepper and Butterscotch, but then decided that the Butterscotch one was too bright so reverted to using un-inked gold Metallic Kraft Stock instead.

Once the ink is dry die cut the baubles pieces from each of the pieces of coloured Metallic Kraft Stock and assemble them using Distress Collage Medium Matte. Apply more of the Distress Collage Medium to small areas on the finished baubles using the fine tip applicator and sprinkle with Distress Clear Rock Candy Glitter.

Once the glitter is dry gently sand back some of the edges and raised surfaces to make it look like the silvering has been revealed after years of being handled. Take care not to remove too much of the colour.

Now for the background; cut pieces of the same silver Metallic Kraft Stock to fit onto your choice of card blank (I used some of the new Wendy Vecchi Perfect Cardstock Landscape Cards). Use a spatula to smear a little white Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint onto the surface of each piece of Kraft Stock and set aside to dry.

Cut several snowflakes from white card using Tim's new Flurry #2 die and ink the edges with a little Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink.

Glue the snowflakes onto the background card, trimming along the edges when glued in place. The Distress Collage Medium is great for adhering these snowflakes because as it dries it becomes clear and shrinks back so you don't see any excess.

Cut some pine needles using brown and green Classic Kraft Stock and Tim's new Funky Festive die set. The branch elements need gluing in place over the needle pieces to give a two colour realistic look and make them more sturdy. As this die piece is so small I found it more convenient to use my Sidekick to cut the elements.

To finish the cards add the pine needles and baubles to the snowflake backgrounds, using a little dimensional tape to raise the baubles from the surface. I mounted mine onto some white card before adding them to the card blanks. I also added sentiments from the Scribbly Christmas stamp set.
