Steampunk Lovebirds with Suzz

Hi!  Suzz here!   I was inspired by the lovebirds!  They went a little steampunk on me but I think they really shine on the front of the card!

I decided to stamp up my die cuts to add a pop of texture to the surface.  I created a flock of birds before I realized what was happening. :)  It was great inspiration for my card.

I cut the birds from inky backgrounds and using the Idea-ology Tim Holtz Backdrops.  I spritzed the backgrounds using the same colors I used on the card.  They were a mix of Seasonal Distress Mica Stains along with a distress oxide.

The backgrounds were created by first applying a layer of opaque crackle texture paste over the flourish stencil. This was done on the backdrops paper and white cardstock.

While the crackle paste was wet the sprays were sprayed multiple times along with water to help mix the colors and thin out in areas the density of the color.  Then a heat gun was used to dry out the crackle paste.  There was a mix of some areas crackling and others not because of the wetness when applied.

After that the background was cut for the card from one of the pieces.  Then the birds were stamped using black archival ink with the various images on some inky remnants.  The birds and feather were covered in versamark ink and then a layer of clear embossing powder heated up.  This made the colors more vibrant and added another pop to the color on the cut out images.

Happy inking!

Saturday Showcase Shenanigans

Hello friends! Tim Holtz has produced so many great sentiment stamps and dies recently. I decided to get inky and create a bunch of cards using different techniques for The Funkie Junkie Boutiques Saturday Showcase!

Check out the variety of techniques used for these!

I do have a video here:

Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/3nhTk1HWuOU

I created eight unique cards using different processes.

We'll start with the Stamping technique.

This one started by stamping the sentiments from Bold Saying CMS #433 in Salvaged Patina Ink. I then selected the Mini Stencil # 159 to stamp over the top by running the Peacock Feathers Distress Ink pad over the stencil. Be sure to wipe off the edges so you only print the stencil pattern. You need to choose a geometric repeating pattern in order to stamp a wider area.

You may need to stamp more than once by lining he inked stencil up. You may notice small dots in the center of the circles. Once I had added a few with my fingers, I decided to make the pattern consistent.
I inked the stencil again on an A2card base being careful to leave a border around. The center piece was trimmed and mounted on another piece of white cardstock.

This is a Clean and Simple one layer card! Using the same Bold Tidings stamp in Shaded Lilac on an A2 card base started this one off. A stamp over using the Architecture Stamp CMS #369 in Wilted Violet is all you really need!

How easy would this be to create a gift set of cards?

Next up is another easy set of cards - positive and negative dies on an alcohol ink panel!

I'll be honest, this one was supposed to be a shaker card but after adding the foam tape, I dropped the sequins in and realized I forgot to add the acetate! Silly me. I used two birthday related sentiments from Bold Text #2 to die cut the alcohol inked piece from my infamous background stash. The piece was trimmed to 5 x 3.75.

After popping out all the letters, and adding a strip of foam tape, the panel was attached to a white A2 card base.

Check out the cool shadow that is created by popping up the front panel.

So, you end up with a pile of alcohol inked letters. We as card makers cannot waste those, so I die cut another panel with the same sentiments, added double stick tape to the back of the panel.  The openings have the right amount of stick to simply pop all the random letters in place to make the second card.

The main panel was trimmed to allow a frame of Curious Metallic Cardstock to set off the inked letters!

Next up is the Bold Tidings Mini #440 with multiple sentiments stacked on the stamp positioner to cover the panel. I used a piece of printed paper from the PaperStash Noel to create this piece. The stamping was done with Faded Jeans Distress Ink.

The A2 sized panel was attached to an A2 card base. It is difficult to see the sparkle. I die cut the Snowy Stars die onto white cardstock and used it as a stencil to apply Translucent Paste coated with Rock Candy Glitter using my Glitter Duster.

The last step was adding a couple of die cut trees using the Woodlands Die and splattering with white Gesso.

How about another take on the multi sentiment background? Another single layer card for the win!

Many of Tim's stamps can just be temporarily taped into a stamp positioner and stamped as a single stamp. I used Noteworthy CMS #446 my new favorite addition as I love sentiment stamps! I stamped the entire stamp with Vintage Phote Distress Ink. The best section was selected and trimmed to 5.25 x 4 inches.

We needed some additional interest, so I selected a few leaf stamps from Pressed Foilage CMS # 376 to add that.  I used Crushed Olive, Dusty Concorn and Peeled Paint Distress inks, inking the stamps up randomly.

Next up is a card for my friend!

This panel started by inking Doily Stencil THS3018 on a white cardstock panel using Shaded Lilac Distress Ink. One of the Floral Outline #430 was stamped in Wilted Violet. The panel was trimmed to 5.5 x 4.0 and mounted on a dark purple panel attached to an A2 base.

Check out the cool raised letters. Alphanumeric Upper Care dies were used to cut the letters. I attached them on a Sticky Strip so the letters could be stenciled with the Doily Stencil and Wilted Violet Ink.  The letters were ink blended with Shaded Lilac and coated with Nuvo Glaze. Once dry, the letters were attached to additional letter die cuts in dark purple, offset slightly. Last step was to attach to the base.

It was hard to choose, but I believe this is my favorite. I stamped another Thank You using the Bold Sayings Stamp CMS #433 and Faded Jeans Distress Ink. Because I used my stamp positioner, it was so easy to stamp additional layers and one layer of embossing ink on top coated with Clear Embossing Powder and heat set. One more step was to add snow using Grit paste on the individual letters.

I took the time to die cut the letters as I wanted to pop them up and add snow using Grit Paste.

The base was created by stamping the Gnome Stamp from Cozy Christmas CMS #444 with Faded Jeans. The stamped panel was trimmed to 5.25 x 4 and mounted on a navy A2 size cardstock before attaching to the card base.

After the grit paste was dry, I used skinny strips of foam tape to pop up the individual letters.

Saturday Showcase - Leaf Fragments Dies

Hi Funkie Junkie Friends! Its Teri With TerisMailbox posting for the Saturday Showcase from The Funkie Junkie Boutique. As soon as I saw the Leaf Fragments Dies by Tim Holtz, I knew I had to have them. Today I present seven different cards using these versatile dies.

Once I started making, I could not stop! Each card led to a new idea.

My YouTube video walks you through the entire process from creating the variety of backgrounds to card assembly.

I started with a slimline card created on a Kraft Base. The leaves are cut from a distress inked background from my stash. I added Ledger Script (CMS 241) stamped with Rustic Wilderness Distress Ink.  I added a few dark green strips cut with the Deckle Edge Trimmer to the front, followed by a piece of Ideology Ephemera. The viewfinders are cut from a patterned paper in my stash and added.

I added a small quote from Ideology to complete the card.

I was able to create a two-fer by using the stamped distress inked background.

Check out how I mounted the background piece and added the cutouts to the base. The sentiment is from an older Stampers Anonymous Stamp.

This card uses the Limited Edition Seasonal Mica Distress Sprays #1 in Flickering Candle, Jack-O-Lantern along with Brushed Corduroy Distress Sprays on a cotton paper. The leaves are done in alcohol inks on Yupo Paper.

The sentiment is cut from an older Sizzix Die #661801. The card was easy to assemble once the circle was cut. Add a bit of twine and you are ready to go.

This is my favorite of all the cards created! It started with a Kraft Slimline base. The birch background is created by stamping the Birch Background from the Birch and Pine stamp CMS280 on a thin piece of Cougar Natural cardstock trimmed with the Deckle Edge Trimmer.

The Leaf Fragments are cut from yet another piece of distressed ink background from my stash. I often will just take a day and make many backgrounds using inks and sprays. Do you do that? After mounting the birch piece on dark green from my stash, I cut another set of Leaves to back the inked pieces. The sentiment if from one of my all time favorite stamps Nature's Wonder CMS 343. Backed with another piece of green cardstock, the strip offers a great place to cover the overlap between the two background stamps.

The next card features leaves cut using alcohol ink on glitter paper.

The background is another stash piece cut with the Deckle Edge Trimmer. I told you I make many while I am at it. The sentiment is from CMS 343 Nature's Wonder, a great leaf stamp with many useful sentiments.

Assembly was quite easy. Attach the background, add the leaves with a twine bow and top off with the sentiment!

Another simple card using a distress inked background from the stash. The base of this design is orange cardstock. I did cut one leaf from the center before mounting (a trick I use often to conserve paper). The brown leaf has 2 layers and is inked on the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

You will probably recognize the leaf from the next card! The sentiment from Nature's Wonder set, embossed in Copper and a twine bow finish this card.

This one started with a piece of acetate with alcohol ink in fall colors applied. Recognize the plaid from a leaf on the previous card? The plaid from Lumberjack CMS 384 was inked with Brushed Corduroy and Rusty Hinge Distress Inks randomly and stamped on Natural Cougar Cardstock.

After lining up the plaid in the center of the Natural Cougar card base, I lined up the Leaf Fragment Die and cut through the plaid and the front of the card base leaving a window for the inked acetate piece. The acetate is sandwiched between the plaid and the base.

I lined up an additional orange leaf on the inside to add texture to the leaf.

And yet another sentiment from Nature's Wonder CMS 343 mounted on a strip or orange cardstock highlights the orange leaf.  A few coordinating enamel dots finish this one up.

I encourage you to stop by The Funkie Junkie Boutique to check out all things Tim.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope I have inspired you to be creative with a single focal die set. I'd love to have you follow/subscribe on my social media sites, all named TerisMailbox.

Saturday Showcase - Eileen Hull Designs Sizzix Chapter 1 new 2021 releases

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. Today I have four versions of a card design to share with you, all of which incorporate Eileen Hull's new Sizzix Chapter 1 releases - 'Mandala' and 'Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers' Thinlits die sets - available now from The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Here's the first version of the card which I shared with you on Wednesday as part of the current 'So Delicate' challenge;

(click on each photo for a closer look)

Let's show you how to recreate this one, starting with the background. I cut a background big enough to fit the white card blank and a couple of Mandala shapes from kraft card. Depending on how deep you want your 'embossed' look to be you can either go with one Mandala shape glued onto the background or two. Place the first one off-centre and then glue the second one over the top, ensuring they are correctly aligned (the design is not fully symmetrical so this is important). I would suggest using scissors to trim off the excess along one edge.

Paint the kraft background with a coat of white gesso followed by 'Buff' Acrylic Paint. These two steps are the basis for the other versions too.

For the verdigris look spritz the background with water before adding a watery layer of 'Sky' Acrylic Paint. Dry this with a heat tool after allowing it to pool around the Mandala shape and dab off any excess with a dry cloth.

Dry brush over the whole background with 'Ancient' Acrylic Paint before sanding the surfaces back gently with a sanding block. This will help to reveal some of the lower layers including a little of the kraft base. Continue to dry brush and sand until you are happy with the look.

Moving on to the flowers begin by cutting the largest floral shape from the 'Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers' set out of vellum (or similar). Fold into eighths by matching two petals at the top from each angle as shown below.

Turn the flower shape over and fold in eights again matching the singular petal shapes at the top as shown below.

Using the smaller pf the flower shapes in the set die cut two from vellum. This die cuts the outside shape plus a second set of petals on the inside. Pinch the outer petals together and shape the inner ones upwards using a ball tool or even the bottom of a pencil.

Use the remaining dies from the set to cut smaller flowers and leaves from a mix of kraft card and vellum. Paint the kraft shapes in colours to coordinate with your background. For the verdigris version I used 'Blackberry' Acrylic Paint on the flowers and a mix of 'Evergreen' and Olive' Acrylic Paint for the leaves.

Layer the flowers together as shown below and finish them with a dot of Liquid Pearls (I used Wendy Vecchi's 'Prickly Pear' version for these cards). Finally die cut or stamp your choice of greeting and add to the card. I used the Tim Holtz 'Alphanumeric Type' dies for this and painted them with the 'Blackberry' colour. I would suggest using Wendy Vecchi's STAY-TION with its magnetized ruler to get your letters and words lined up properly. Mount your finished design onto the card blank and it's ready to send.

Now for the first of three further colour alternatives that has the look of a worn black book cover.

After mounting the Mandala on the kraft background and painting it all with white gesso and 'Buff' Acrylic Paint go over it all with a coat of 'Black' Acrylic Paint.

Gently sand over the surfaces with a sanding block, then dry brush with more 'Buff' and after some 'Gilt' Acrylic Paint. Sand it back again and repeat until you get the look you want.

I used the same mix of green paints for the leaves and 'Ruby' Acrylic Paint for the flowers and words on this version, though most colours would go with such a neutral background.

The third version is a softer neutral, this time replicating the look of aged plaster.

After adding the white gesso and 'Buff' Acrylic Paint layers to the background spritz it with water and add a dilute layer of 'Elephant' Acrylic Paint, allowing it to pool and dry. Dab off any excess with a dry cloth.

Repeat the process with diluted 'Umber' Acrylic Paint over a wet surface - you'll need less than you needed with the 'Elephant' layer. Sand back gently when dry.

To team with this paler neutral background I added more of the green mix to the leaves and teamed the flowers and words with 'Heather' Acrylic Paint.

The final version is more colourful than the last two with more of an aged velvet look.

This last one is a little different from the first three, beginning not with white and Buff but with a coat of 'Heather' Acrylic Paint.

Mist the dry surface with water and add a dilute mix of 'Blackberry' Acrylic Paint, allowing it to pool as before and after drying with a heat tool dabbing off any excess with a dry cloth.

Repeat the process with a smaller amount of dilute 'Umber' Acrylic Paint again allowing it to settle around the Mandala.

When dry gently sand back the surfaces before dry brushing them with 'Gilt' Acrylic Paint. Repeat this process until you achieve the look you want.

I teamed this final finish with the green leaves and this time added flowers and words coloured with 'Cheddar' Acrylic Paint.

Thanks for visiting to catch today's Saturday Showcase tutorial featuring Eileen Hull's new 'Mandala' and 'Folio Page, Pocket & Flowers' Thinlits die sets. I hope you've enjoyed seeing how it is possible to achieve several different looks using the same design and a range of colours.

There's still plenty of time to enter the current Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge 'So Delicate' which runs through Tuesday, February 2nd at 11.55pm. We look forward to seeing your amazing creations.
